Ah, I keep forgetting that a lot of you think of plot-critical characters as being "forced".
I found Ashley's dialog just as suggestive as Liara's, though. (In fact, I felt like the game was pushing me towards Ashley in ME1 far more than Liara. Maybe we get more sensitive when we don't want to be pushed towards a particular character?)
Liara is critical to the plot only in that she shows you the plans to the Crucible. After that, how critical is she to the story?
The notion of her being forced comes from her perceived plot armor. I mean, Miranda gets WAY more flack than Liara and people usually cite her plot armor in ME-2, but you can orchestrate her death if you want to. Also, the white light scene, even if we're not in a romance, seemed VERY weird to me. It was like "uh....so what are you showing me? why are you showing me this? and why are you leaning your head on my shoulder?" It was like "come on, we're war buddies, but we're not brother and sister, and we're not lovers"
It surely depends on how your role played your Shepard, but even if I hadn't romanced Liara, the emotion of the scene played out like a wordless final conversation. The sense I got from that scene was this:
"Shepard,
"You saved me from the Geth on Therum. You were there when I watched my mother die on Illium.
"I was there when the Collectors destroyed our ship and killed you. That day, you tried to saved us. You saved as many of the crew as you could. I knew you'd be the only hope of anyone saving the galaxy. So I tried to save you—from the Collectors, from the Shadow Broker.
"I could only do so much. I'm not like you, Shepard—I can't stop the Reapers. But I can help, and it's brought us this far.
"This is the end, and I only wish I could do more. With you there is some hope that organic life might survive to see a better future.
"Thank you, for everything."
I'll admit that head-shoulder leaning might be a little much, but on the other hand, it's good to see friendly physical intimacy between character we care so much about, in terms of handshakes, etc. I mean, would it have killed Shepard to shake Garrus's hand in their final conversation, for example? Or, you know, more hugs, like the scene from Tali's loyalty mission.
One more thought: if Garrus is Shepard's right hand, Liara is Shepard's left. She's just as big a supporting force as Vakarian is; with bravery and brawn comes badassery and biotics.
