Maybe it's just that I liked her anyway, but I didn't notice Liara being any more "forced" than Ashley was.
Ashley can die and never show up again.
And most of her dialog doesn't seem to be her wanting to romance me.
I think a lot of you are misconstruing character with favortism.
Ashley might not say things or do things as often as Liara because it would be out of character. She might act cold because that is who Ashley really is, not because someone else is forced.

I guess I just really like most types of women, as long as they have an interesting character. IS THAT SO WRONG?!

As a matter of fact, I decided to play a game where I didn't romance her, but I want to take the girl I romance with me on missions. The only way for me to NOT tend to choose her on missions was to play as an adept.
In other words, the only way to not need her is to become her. How ironic, really.

I don't know...those of us that like Tali get mocked all the time.

Yeah, she just tells you what's going on, gives you her opinions, she gets over her mom quickly, and her daddy problems doesn't really complicate anything. In fact, her "dad" is actually kinda cool.

That's what Javik does, though. It's when he doesn't deem you worthy of sarcasm you should worry.

On the other hand, I thought they manage to put some nice conflicts in there because 100 for an asari is barely more than 17-20 for a human really... So she does get her a-typical teenage moments.
I romanced Ashley on my first playthrough and the tension and undertones between Shep and Liara was nailed perfectly. She's the teenage stars-in-her-eyes girl, she'll never lose the attachment she seems to display to Shep... At times I felt bloody awful as she really straddles the line between a brilliant friend and a LI...
Meh, I dunno, I like her, I think it was well written. I can see why people think she's forced and 'favoured' though but even as 'friend' I get the feeling she went out of her way to ensure Shep was happy regardless and so she made a pretty difficult sacrifice in a strange sort of way, so I admire her for that.

Liara is the ultimate wife material. Smart, funny, cute, blue eyes, blue in general and she can kill you. Yes I'm in love.
^ this. Obvious hate thread is obvious, QQ plot device QQ Tali/Miranda/Ashley should be important too QQ <_<
@bold- It's funny because it's true. Liara is, in a sense, 1 big plot device.
Bold2- They really should be. How dare someone like a character oher than your favorite. The monsters.

First off, the reason why she is, as many peope say, "forced", is because she's simply a vital character to the story and a crucial part of Shepard's crew - her knowledge of the Protheans is what led the Normandy crew to Ilos and what also helped Admiral Hackett and his team of engineers to even consider building the Crucible. How else would these things happen if it wasn't for her?
Like it or not, Mass Effect is in need of such characters, and Liara happens to be one of them. Anderson, Hackett and Joker also happen to be such characters, ones that can't be killed throughout the trilogy, and I don't see any threads complaining that they're "forced". Liara simply happens to also be a possible squad mate to bring along on missions. If you don't like her, don't use her, but keep in mind that the plot can't progress without her. If she wasn't here, then there would have been another character to fill that role.
As a person, she's one of the very few who's always been loyal to Shepard. Hell, if not for her, Shepard would not even be alive in Mass Effect 2 as his or her body wouldn't have been brought to Cerberus. It's because of Liara that this all happens. Her development and story arc across the trilogy is what makes her such an intriguing person. Granted, some people may not find her as interesting as I do, but her contribution in Shepard's journey cannot be denied.

1. She's got the best written romance arc in the series.
2. She is a central character in the best Mass Effect related DLC.
3. She doesn't give Shep grief about being forced to work with Cerberus.
4. She completely owns in combat. Singularity + warp = win. Oh, and Stasis.
5. She has two of the most touching scenes in the entire series. (Name in the Stars, and her Farewell)
6. If unromanced she is one of Shep's most devoted friends, and in that regard is basically the female Garrus.
7. She is the only character who Shepard can actually let his guard down with and confess private doubts and fears, in all three games. While most of the romance options had those moments in ME3, Liara is the only one who has had them since Mass Effect 1. In fact that is probably the biggest reason why I like the character, as her interaction with Shepard also makes Shepard feel more like a real flesh & blood human being.
8. She is a scientist. I tend to be a fan of all the squadmates that are written as intelligent. (Miranda & Mordin, for instance)
9. My Shep was a paragade, so an alien romance option seemed to make more sense for him and fit in better with the whole galactic unity thing that paragons & paragades are all about. Ashley works better if Shep is more distrustful of aliens, IMO. Tali is an alien too of course, but she wasn't one of the LIs in Mass Effect 1, and she has never been one of my favorite characters. (like her, just not a favorite)
10. It doesn't hurt that she's hot.

Miranda is horse-faced **** made of silicon.
Tali has a sexy voice, but 3 fingers is a turn off (and she ****s in that suit).
Liara is sweet, kind, intelligent, has a dynamic personality...
...lol jk bewbs.
Oh for the love of Chtulhu, Ashley is not racist! She's simply saying that the Council races will look after themselves before they think to look at humanity and therefore humanity should not trust them so easily.
AND HEY, SHE WAS RIGHT!
As for Liara. i've never seen the appeal with her. She has four different personalities and it seems like the writers want her to be everything. She isn't plot-critical either. You could easily have sent her to work on the Crucible with Hackett and not seen her again.

I agree.
The BSN loves to greatly exaggerate character traits. Ashley is just midly distrustful of aliens and has issues over the First Contact War, but her detractors completely blow that out of proportion and paint her as racist.
In a similar vein, Liara gets accused of being a stalker, even though she isn't. Sure, she's ultra loyal and devoted to Shepard. But if Shepard dumps for another LI she is far more understanding than any real world woman probably would be, and wishes him happiness. Stalker? Hardly.

Sold. Nerds are sexy. I'm just sad I couldn't romance Mordin, I feel like he is the King of the Nerds.
