This guy is just the most hilarious, stereotypical dwarf ever.   Just compared to Varric or Oghren he has that personality that makes him likeable (in my opinion).

However, just as I walked into the tavern while playing the OC again today, and watched the conversation between Khelgar, Neeshka and Qara, I had a bit of a gaming 'revelation'.   I had always assumed Bioware's modern characters were far better, and that going back to NWN or BG, I would be surprised at how 'primitive' the companions would be.

However comparing the motivations, stories and even companion quests in NWN2 to the ones in Mass Effect 1/2/3 and Dragon Age Origins/2 it was hard to decide which ones were better.  Though in ME, for example, companions had better animations and perhaps more interesting comments during missions, I often found the personalities in NWN much less annoying and less overly dramatic than in ME2.  Some of the tavern conversations were genuinely funny, and I felt as much of a connection with Khelgar by the end of the campaign than I did to Garrus or Tali after multiple ME games.

Opinions?

Yeah, Bioware really did a great job with Nwn2. However its not an old game, its one of the last PC games on the market, before everyone, including ME, went multiport console ports. As such it has far more resources available to work with compared to ME, so by no chance is limited in what devs were able to implement. Just look at dynamic shadows and texture resolution. Year is really not a factor in games quality anymore. We are living in a world of stagnation, graphics aside, and even that is stagnating. If youre into 4X games, try Master of Orion 2, a 1996 but still surpasses Civ5.

Yeah, I know, Kamal, I know.

Personally, I'm of the opinion this thread should be moved to the Official Campaign forum.

Harumph!

Haha.

Dorateen is right, this can bring spoilers and it'd be better posted on the OC subforum. Also, just in case: you mention ME and DA. Avoid spoilers from those or other games entirely.

Fun fact to learn. NWN2 lead designer also worked on Dragon Age.

Neither Ferret Badouin (http://kotaku.com/16...leaves-obsidian) nor Kevin Saunders (http://www.warcry.co...2-Lead-Designer)
are mentioned in the Dragon Age credits (http://www.allgame.c...610&tab=credits). Who was it?

I understand BW didn't work on NWN2 directly, but clearly NWN2 *did* influence DA and I'm sure many of the DA team have played NWN2.

Not sure how a text search failed, but the fact remains Bioware didn't make NWN2. http://social.biowar...592798#11598052

OEI and BioWare do indeed have a close connection, going back at least to when OEI was contracted to develop the NWN expansion Shadows of Undrentide. When time came for the next big project though, BioWare decided to palm off the DnD license to OEI, and develop their own fantasy cRPG, Dragon Age. Under pressure from Atari, OEI quickly cranked out NWN2, while BioWare took their time with DA. So while it might seem like DA is a kind of successor to NWN2, in reality they're more like sister projects, both building off the old NWN base and going off in different directions.

Yes, and you have to remember that DA started development around 2003/2004, and was in development hell for like 3 years (or if not, they stopped for JE/ME and then came back to it).

I think they probably started development at the same time, but I'm reasonably certain that when the BW team came back to DA they probably at least had an awareness of what Neverwinter Nights 2 got right and wrong.

Even though they have fared vastly differently in terms of commercial success (Obsidian has been extremely unlucky with AP, NWN2, KOTOR 2 and like 4 cancelled projects), I consider OE and BW close, as said above ^^^

too much dialog, too complex rules. Worked fine for Baldurs Gate, no competition whatsoever. But in a world filled with action rpg's it just doesnt work anymore. In fact it didnt even work out for Planescape Torment. sales were not stellar to say the least. Bioware part on the other side went rather easy on dialogs. Trivializing them, while keeping the story part intact. And obviously - it works. Talking to Raven or Kreia was a nightmare from a powergamers perspective. Too much missed stuff on a wrong dialog choice. Maybe with a dialog wheel it would work better, cant say.

sou was developed by floodgate wich houses many former looking glass employees. neither bioware nor obsidian ever held the rights of a dnd license. this license was bought by interplay and later sold to atari. now it's in the hands of hasbro.

yeah, because with a dialogue wheel and every line voiced there is no in-depth conversation and complex branching

I think the dialogue does have positives. If you go back to the old games half your screen is taken up by massive black bars, as if watching a cinema movie on a square screen. Also, full VO and less pointless stuff is good too.

So many of the great conversations in NWN2 weren't voiced, yet the 2 hour long massive dialogue exchanges between you and Aldanon were! It seemed pointless IMHO.
