The key file error is a leftover from the days of the beta-test - they people in the beta got a time-limited keyfile. BioWare then forgot to remove the keyfile check from the release version.
The workaround is simply not to run the GFF editor directly, but just through the main Toolset GUI - that is, select File->Open.
