This will change when I get around to experimenting with different Shepard's, but for my main and current Shep, I almost always go with Liara and Garrus in ME1 and ME3. I mixed it up a lot in ME2, but I do favor Garrus, Grunt and Samara.

I don't ususally bring anyone along for tactical reasons but instead if i like them or if they seem relevent to a particular mission's story

ME2 = Me and 2 human counterparts
ME3 = Me and 2 human counterparts that play on silver and above.

In my first few playthroughs of ME1, it was always Garrus and Wrex. The ME2 squad was my favorite, so I switched it up more - Garrus and Tali/Thane/Grunt. For ME3, it's been Garrus from the beginning and the second squadmate has varied a lot. Mostly Garrus and Tali since I recruited her though.

I like it most when I can pick squadmates based on what I would think would be interesting situations/missions. I.e. taking Legion with you on Tali's loyalty mission (which was awesome).

I really liked bringing Samara and Thane along on missions, those two always had such unique dialogue. Legion as well.

Depends.

On fighting Reapers - Always Ashley/Kaidan + Vega. Garrus, Tali, Liara and EDI dont have the raw firepower and shields to kill hordes of husks, those annoying ravagers, or those vanguard like brutes.

Vs Cerberus - Garrus and Liara/Tali/EDI. A mix of powers helps against their strong shields and deadly support units. Energy drain is good against centurions and nemesis. Stasis and singularity help with common soldiers and the pesky phantoms. Overload is essential to killing those turrets.

I always play with Tali, both because I like her char, and it makes sense to have a tech expert/hacker on the team (and in me1 it was neccesary).

In 1 I used Ashley when I was a soldier, or Wrex when I was a biotic.

In 2, I always use Zaeed, because he is a mans mans man!  And his hands, while strong and masculine, are soft as a velvet child.

In 3, I always use the large human (Jake?) because he seems to be the best companion statistically, and I dont find any of them engaging in any way whatsoever.  I wish I could get Zaeed again.

Never really had a "dream team" I like all the squad mates [except Jacob] but with the smaller roster in ME3 I used Garrus/Javik or Javik/Vega quite a bit.
