LONG POST. My sincerest apologies for it. But I'm not a thread creator, and I think my issues with MP are on-topic with this thread. So if you're a troll, and/or don't like long posts, SKIP THIS. But we can't stop trolls from snarking. Trolls can't resist. Hence, the troll-age.
I don't wanna' be THAT guy. But on bronze, I've played with MOSTLY those guys. I've read that on silver and gold that this may no't be such an issue, but I'm not very good at this MP thing. It's likely a Bronze life for me. It's hard enough.
What bothers me:
On bronze level, the meta-multiplayer gamers who obviously are working up their umpteenth character to level 20, and are clearly annoyed that I'm not Space Rambo. They push me out of the way, move into my cover, warp right next to me, and race off without the team as...that's right. Space Rambo. I'm level 16, now, and I can count on one hand the number of missions I've played in which the team actually worked together. I should have written down all their gamertags and send them a "thank you" for playing the game the way it should be played.
And yes, to all the nasty little trolls who have entered, farted, and left in this forum, and have derided those in this thread who are upset with the lack of cooperation, teamwork, and fairness, there IS a right way to play:
1. Cooperation, teamwork, fairness, support, understanding your role in the team: GOOD.
2. Lone wolfing, kill stealing, solitary melee clustering, leaving teammates to bleed out: BAD.
If you don't get this simple dichotomy, well, let's just say I don't want you living in my community IRL.
I wish I could say to those bad players on Bronze that I'm mostly forced to play with (but don't because I refuse to use a mike--it's a horribly abused bit of tech), "Look. I'm an old gamer. I don't have a 20-year old's hand-eye coordination or reflexes any more. I'm slow. I also am not in this for the personal glory. I'm playing to get my Galactic Readiness at 100% for the SP game. I'm NOT happy that I need to play the multiplayer game*. I'm doing my best. I really am. And I"m trying to be aware of a solid role I can play on a team, and what I'm not capable of doing. So as a common, grunt human soldier, I promise to do the following:
1. I will never steal your kills. I will not EVER use my sniper rifle to steal your melee kill or your biotic attack that you've worked hard to get.
2. I will not get into your way. I may follow you at a distance because on some maps I'm easily confused (I'm old), but I will NEVER glom onto your cover spot (that's rude) and I will not step into your line of fire. I follow because you know where the enemy's coming, and I don't. And no, I don't always remember. Besides, you DON'T want me
leading the charge.
3. I will not get a lot of kills. In fact, I'll always have the fewest, and the fewest point totals. That's not because I'm not helping the team. I will hang back, pick my targets, and always go for assists. If someone is meleeing, I will often pepper their opponent, then allow the fellow player to make the melee kill. As a grunt, my job is support,
not commando. Most of the badges I get at mission's end are for assists and support. They may not be as flashy as your multiple badges, but I feel good. I helped.
4. I will never, ever, rush out blindly into melee or the thick of the fight. That will get me in others' way, get me killed, and put everyone at a disadvantage because I just stupidly got myself killed.
5. I will have your back. I know that you're younger, faster, and much more experienced at this sort of game than me. Because you're a better player, I will keep to the flank, and work on maintaining a buffer between you and whatever might be circling around to shoot us in the back.
6. I don't play any other character. I'm bad enough as it is; I will be worse with yet another Level One character with too many skills and abilities to remember. So I play a human soldier in support. That's all.
I just don't want to be THAT guy. But on Bronze, I have to play with 'em all the time.
Thanks for reading. I appreciate it.
*Yes, I'm aware that I don't technically HAVE to play multiplayer. But Galactic Readiness IS tied to EMS. After one SP playthrough, I've resigned myself to playing multiplayer, to get my EMS at the max. I'll give myself every option I can for a good ending, if we get one in the DLC. And I'm just trying to have fun, too, within the spirit of the rules. EMS goes down if you don't keep playing (I know there's a 75% GR floor), and I want to get a Level 20 soldier so I can better help the team, and not be a burden to the other players.
You on Xbox? If so add me, my GT is VeteranSpace8. I have a bunch of friends and most of them are good enough to drag you through Silver by your hand, so you can get out of Bronze if you want.
Just stick to the side of someone... anyone and shoot at what they are shooting at and we'll be good to go.
