Not necessarily because you didn't like their character, but simply because you didn't feel as much of a need for them as other members.

For me it was...

ME1: Wrex
ME2: Grunt (with Jacob a close second)
ME3: Ashley

I'll make it a point to use them more if/when I play through again.

ME1- Ashley (Didn't like her personality and found the others more useful)
ME2- Mordin (Didn't feel right taking an old man into combat)
ME3- Javik (Again with the personality issues. I only ever take him to Thessia)

I rotate them all in & out and use different squadmates for different missions.  But if I had to narrow it down to the squadmates I used least, my guess would be probably be...

Tali in ME1

Jacob in ME2

EDI in ME3

Tali & Jacob sort of had the same problem in that they were both boring in their respective games, so I may have used them the least. EDI I liked a lot more, but since she also has dialogue when not  selected as a squadmate (comm with the Normandy), I didn't feel a need to take her groundside as much.

ME1: Liara (Used Ashley & Garrus the most)
ME2: Mordin (Used Garrus & Jacob the most)
ME3: TIE - EDI / Liara (Used Garrus & Vega)

And I LOVE Liara and Mordin.

ME1: Kaidan.
ME2: Squad was too large IMO. So, most Squadmates only left Normandy for their loyality missions.
ME3: EDI. I like her as a character but as a squadmate she was absolutely useless IMO.

ME1: Ashley and Wrex, Ash always gets Virmired and I just haven't gotten around to playing with Wrex.
ME2: Samara and Thane, most of the team I didn't use outside their LMs but these 2 didn't even have combat in theirs.
ME3: Vega and EDI, didn't really bother with them once I had all the others to choose from.

Mass Effect 1: Tali. Yeah, I almost never brought her along. Not sure why.

Mass Effect 2: Jacob. Never bothered with this incredibly boring and useless character. Also, I hated the look of his "armor". If anyone really needed an alternate appearence, he did.

Mass Effect 3: Javik, actually. He's interesting, I'll give him that, but he can be annoying on some missions. Once again, I didn't use Tali much either, though I took her everywhere in ME2. Plus, she arrives too late in the game this time.

ME1: Kaidan.
ME2: Miranda, Zaeed, Jacob. I also didn't use Tali much for for Collector-based missions.
ME3: Vega, Kaidan.

I tend to pick based on my favourite characters, and I never find Sentinels as useful. Maybe it's because I often play as an Adept as an Engineer, so I take my opposite and then a soldier-type character.

OP, how can you not use the Krogans? They are the most powerful squadmates, and that was really missing in ME3.

You should include your class…it influences a lot of things. I usually play Infiltrator, mostly assassin, sometimes engineery. This means that I typically want 1. biotic, and 2. muscle/firepower.

Least:

ME: Kaidan (dead Ash), and Tali.
ME2: Zaeed, Mordin.
ME3: EDI, James.

Most:

ME: Wrex
ME2: Grunt, Garrus, Miranda
ME3: Garrus, Liara.

(I literally play basically the entire ME3 with Garrus and Liara. I miss ME2 and its variable squad setups so much.)

They were all a bit dull compared to the other characters imo, and their powers never really stood out.

ME2:Tried to give everybody some usage but I used Jacob the least. His powers were crap.
ME3. I really didn't use James since I took the soldier role.

That's what I thought at first, too, but I found that Wrex was always the guy dying on me in ME1, so I stopped using him and then just developed other preferences by the time Grunt came around.

As people's responses here show,  you can get by without any character.  It's probably only dependent on your play style.

I tend to avoid melee confrontations, which I'm guessing is where the krogans are the most useful.

Probably Tali because she arrived so late in the game and he is only really effective against geth, Sometimes took her to certain missions purely for dialogue though.
