ME2: Jack (gets my vote for most useless squadmate of all time)

I didn't use Jack much, but when I did, I found her to be surprisingly tough and good at taking point. She has a habit of walking ahead more than the other characters, so she's useful in letting me know there's trouble when I hang back.

Useful like a canary is useful. She ALWAYS would die on me. I mean ALWAYS. She was billed as this badass that can take down mechs on her own, but once she's on my squad she had problems taking down low level enemies on her own. And her shockwave? Useless. Barely would scratch the enemy (I always played on insanity).

Can't see how Liara is not useful in ME1 unless you're already playing as an adept. I would walk into a room, have her use singularity and turkey shoot. Singularity out? Just use lift. Shotgun weilding dude or krogan that takes 1000 bullets? Use warp. Some of those things you can use Kaiden or Wrex with, but Liara had it all.  It was one way to turn the difficulty in Insanity down instantaneously to Veteran, while still technically playing Insanity.

Funny - that's what happened to me with Wrex for some reason.  I've only had one play-through and it was on normal, though.

Liara + big_gun (Garrus, James) were probably my most-often used combo.

Yes, Wrex would do the same. However, if I told him to stay back with me, he'd be fine. I used his biotics along with his shotgun for protection against close in enemies, but he wasn't nearly as useful as Liara. Liara would totally nullify threats. I mean using Liara was damn near like cheating. She would throw enemies in the air defenseless and I just had to point an shoot. Too easy.

I really don't give a rats ass what liara can do, i don't like her, any more questions?

2 of the worse characters that seem to be hashed from different eras of life

ME1 - Wrex.  I haven't taken him once with me.
ME2 - Jacob/Thane - only had them when I had to.
ME3 - James - Honestly, I'd rather have anyone else in my party.

Tali and Garrus all the way, though I did replace Garrus with Kaidan in ME3 only to assure the romance between my Shep and the former to develop. Which of course was unnecessary.

How do you figure? Unless you play as an engineer. Without her, I couldn't unlock any container, other than that, her powers are the same as an engineer. Calling her useless is like calling the entire engineer class useless. Same with Liara, it's like calling adepts useless.

1) Thats why you keep ordering squadmates into cover position, they all have a habbit of dying if you leave them to their own.
2) You know, you can trigger Biotic explosions with Shockwave? Still scales with Difficulty and using Jack and a 2nd Squadmate or your Shepard to trigger them, usually kept everything away from you.

Jack was really good at keeping stuff away from your position. Then again... i'd rather have the Jack from the Cinematics.

Still... compared to Jackob? Jack was gold, pure gold.

I use whoever compliments my own skills.

In ME1 I mostly played adept or engineer, so my crew was either Kaidan and Liara (if engie) or Kaidan and Tali (if adept). I only used the others for the achievements or if I had to.

In ME2 I almost always had Miranda along with me, and loved teaming her with Zaeed, although I would swap him out for Garrus on occasion. I never used Grunt, and rarely used Jacob, Samara, Jack, Kasumi and Tali. I occasionally used Thane. Despite having so many to choose from, I felt quite restricted to who suited my style.

In ME3 I have 2 go-to squads. Against Cerberus I tend to use EDI and either Liara or Javik, and against husks I tend to use Liara and either Kaidan or Garrus. Apart from the Sur'Kesh mission, where I always use Liara and Garrus. I do feel a lot more free to mix the crew up now. But I find Ashley and Vega utterly useless.

As a general rule of thumb, if they're a soldier, I don't need them. I need powers, so I can handle any situation. I also love having biotic-heavy squads, with a smattering of overload for good measure.

Re. Tali: in ME1 she was a beast. I adored her, and she never moved from my squad when I was playing adept. In ME2 I found her more than useless. I took her on her loyalty mission, and on Legion's loyalty mission, and that was it. In ME3 she's slightly more useful, but she's not around for long enough, so I don't use her that much.

That reminds me: I could never get that to work!  It doesn't matter how often I told them to stay back, they'd always follow.  It's like that Monty Python skit...

ME: "Ok, you stay here, and YOU stay THERE."
THEM: "Ok."
I move towards target and they follow me.
ME: "What are you doing??"
THEM: "We're following you."
ME: "But didn't I just.....!!!"  :pinched:

ME1: Liara and Tali: Other squadies can cover their roles and others simultaneously
ME2: Jacob, Jack, Kasumi: Jacob had poor powers, Jack and Kasumi glass cannons without the canon part
ME3: Javik, Ashley, James: Javik made out of glass, I play Soldier, so Ash and James redundant

Miranda and Jacob would kill unshielded enemies with their biotic combos (talking about insanity here), but I couldn't get the same results with Miranda and Jack or anyone with Jack.

It could be my playstyle, but I found engineers useless in Mass Effect 1. Biotics were overpowered, imo.
ME2: There are not enough synthetic enemies in the games to really justify bringing Tali along, and Legion is better than her in every way (gameplay-wise).
ME3: She is slightly more useful, but other characters are simply better against non-synthetic enemies (Cerberus and Reapers)

Weird, as a soldier I needed Liara and Tali for perfect balance. Any other combination would unbalance, plus Liara's the only one with Singularity. Awesome when playing soldier. It's like an instant Easy mode when playing insanity with Liara on your squad.

Totally agree with you on ME2 and ME3. She was the most useful player in the game besides Liara, perhaps even more useful than Liara in ME1, but in ME2 and ME3, Tali's pretty much useless.
