ME1: Liara and Tali: Other squadies can cover their roles and others simultaneously
ME2: Jacob, Jack, Kasumi: Jacob had poor powers, Jack and Kasumi glass cannons without the canon part
ME3: Javik, Ashley, James: Javik made out of glass, I play Soldier, so Ash and James redundant

Weird, as a soldier I needed Liara and Tali for perfect balance. Any other combination would unbalance, plus Liara's the only one with Singularity. Awesome when playing soldier. It's like an instant Easy mode when playing insanity with Liara on your squad.

I found Tali rather useless in ME1 as well. She dies easily. While that can occasionally be true as well for the casters in ME1 (biotics), they more than make up for it with the amount of damage and crowd control they are dishing out before they go down. Tali's biggest use in that game is unlocking containers, and you can also use Garrus & Kaidan for that, both of whom are better in a fight.

The same is true for Tali in ME2.

In ME3 she is slightly more useful as engineers got a much needed buff, but still far from being the most useful squadmate. While she can be useful in certain situations (against Geth), overall Liara, Javik and Vega all deal out a lot more damage and are better at crowd control. Garrus is more useful as well as he also has overload, but tends to deal out more damage and is harder to kill.

ME1: Garrus.
ME2: Garrus, Jacob, Thane, and Jack (I enjoy her character tho).
ME3: EDI and Javik.

In ME3 I still don't really like using Garrus but I was tired of using the same 3 people on 3 different classes lol. Plus I was never one to bring squaddies based on being useful if I like them i'll bring them...

While I do mix things up a lot in all three games (there's little bits of dialogue that are unique to each character that I like to find), a lot of it depends on the type of class I'm playing.  Although, even considering that, there are some characters that get a lot less use than others.

ME1: Tali - Her skillset just isn't all that useful in most situations, and she's very squishy.  It doesn't take much for her to die, especially when she uses that shotgun of hers.  Why does she even have a shotgun?  I'd think a sniper rifle would make more sense for her.  But whatever.  She doesn't really bring anything to the table that Kaidan or Garrus don't, and they are more versatile/survivable.

ME2: Jack - This one was tough, since I found all the squadmates to be useful in this game.  But Jack was used less mostly because she suffers the same flaws that Tali did in ME1.  Her powers are situational, and she's squishy.  ME2 Tali is almost as useless, but at least her powers aren't rendered moot by upper difficulty levels.

ME3: Ashley - I really don't find Ashley's skillset to be all that useful in this game.  Pretty much everything she does, James does better.  She doesn't have skills that I can trust the AI to use well, so she frequently ends up barely contributing at all to combat.

ME3 - Liara (again, I have biotics covered)

Totally, I mean what the hell? I never gave her a shotgun, but she was more useful with the marksman perk fully evolved.

So you're saying that you found Ashley and Kaidan to be equally useless in both ME1 and ME3?  That's kinda odd, but okay.

Well I forgot that before Virmire you had them both on the team...it's been some time since I played ME1.  Changed it to Kaidan

Did playthroughs as Male Vanguard, and Female Soldier. Both times, these characters were pretty useless.

ME1 - Ashley

ME2 - Jacob (followed closely by Thane)

ME3 - EDI (followed closely by Javik)

In ME1, I used everyone relatively the same amount.

In ME2, I ALWAYS had Miranda with me, my other squadmate was to fit the mission I was playing (Usually Garrus, Grunt, or Kasumi, loyalty missions notwithstanding)

In ME3, I almost never use Garrus or Tali, except for when I'm forced too.

ME: Ashley, Tali, occasonally Liara.
ME2: Miranda, Jacob, Zaieed, .... okay honestly pretty much everyone other then Thane, Garrus, Tali, and Jack like 90% of the game.
ME3: EDI. The rest I rotate fairly heavily.

You know, that always made me mad. In order to use legion more, you either have to sacrifice your crew or members of your squad.

It's different every time I play a different class. I choose a team that best combines with my class. But I kinda felt that Garrus totally had advantage over Williams and I don't think I will use her if I have Garrus available :)

Hm. At first I would have agreed with you, but after experimenting quite a bit with Ash after initially being disappointed with her [i've found] provided you have an AP mod (sub for AP ammo) Ashley can do everything better if she is levelled properly. Marksman for example is an absolute beast of a power especially if spec'd for either the revenant or the mattock.

With the right specs she does better damage than Garrus at higher accuracy with either ARs or snipers and she has more health by default. Garrus's main advantage is overload. But imo fully maxed out heavy disruptor ammo with headshot bonus, power bonus and marksman is even more useful on shielded/synthetic enemies on higher difficulties. Inferno blast grenades and proximity mines are about on par imo.

it's actually a recommended strategy. Her squad bonus powers are quite handy, especially for soldiers and infiltrators.

Kinda have to adress this - I played Adept on Insanity in ME1 for my second playthrough and went to get Liara quite late, found I had some general difficulty in spite of Adept being VERY powerful.

Then I got Liara... and the rest of the game was a bloody cakewalk because double singularity is just crazy awesome. I stunlocked Saren for the entire duration of the Citadel final fight just by using Singularity, then setting up Liara's once mine ran out, then my own when hers ran out, etc.

Iz crazy!

ME1: Garrus since Ashley is my designated sniper
ME2: Garrus because I'm mad at him for disregarding my advice and not returning to C-Sec or becoming spectre
ME3: Garrus since his usefullness is done after Menae.
