This is actually my second playthrough so you don't have to worry about spoiling me or anything.  But here's my question.  As I get ready to fight the dragon, my party is me (DW warrior, with reaver and champion unlocked, and he's in that Warden Commander armor, he's nigh unkillable and does sickening DPS), Morrigan, Wynne, and Loghaine.  We've been just tearing it up.  I killed both the generals without any problems and all of that.

But my concern is, not having Leliana or Zevran in my party means I'll have very limited use of the ballistas because no one will be able to repair them.  Did I screw up?  I chose this group because the sheer power of it is really awesome.  I mean you should've seen how we just tore through Denerim and the Fort to get to the roof.  It was almost boring. I even got some weird achievements for it.

I still have all four armies to use but I'm just curious if not really having the ballistas to use will make this fight impossible.  On my first playthrough I relied heavily on them.  But in that game I didn't have Morrigan and I didn't have Wynne.  I had Alistair, Leliana and Oghren.  Kind of a gimped group for the archdemon but that was all I had.

Should I reload an earlier save game to get Leliana in the party?

No you didn't I thought I had when I did this but you basically just have to eventually kill every single @#*@#ng soldier he sends at you, once you do that (And it is quite long.) The dragon will fly back to the middle.
Just be prepared for a very, very, very long fight.

I'm unaware that the Ballista's can even be damaged, I'm sure it is possible to win with that group. Especially if you don't use the Ballista's from the very beginning and start using them after that half where the Archdemon separates itself from the field and sicks darkspawn on you.

From what I've seen ballista's only get damaged on hard+ for whatever reason, I have no idea why.

If you use them too much they have to be reloaded and only rogues have the skill to do it.  However, they will break permanently after a while and you have to move on to the next one.

None of the characters in my group had archery talents on my first run but I used bows with 3 of them + spells from Morrigan to do around 50% of the total damage from range.

I think you will find that it's hardly one of the tougher fights in the game. Also, whatever potions you have left this would be the time to go nuts with them. I had greater balms of every type, ridiculous amounts of healing and mana pots, swift salves, grenades and poisons. I don't think I really needed a tenth of it all though.

You can beat the thing w/o even touching the ballistas actually so don't worry about it

Your mages will be of more use than a stupid ballista that only does 50 dmg a shot

I think the ballistas are really only important in that one section where the archdemon is out of reach. Good melee characters do better then ballistas if he's in melee range. The good news is you have limited range damage potential so does the archdemon. Just sit there and plug at him with bows and spells and leave the darkspawn to your armies.

*feels stupid for having beaten the archdemon several times and thinking: "wtf!? ballistas? where!?"*

Ballista don't get damaged necessarily, they just jam. And really, there's like 3 or 4 of them. The chances of them all jamming is slight.

As for your party, just have your main switch to a bow if the ballistas are out. You should have competent dex, and Loghain should be able to tank the regular crunchies with a bit of support.

I used Me (the tank that is a pain in the ass for that dragon to kill because of the 500 hit points and tough armor and slightly hard to even hit) Leliana,Alistair as a DW, and Wynne. first two fights with the archdemon ended in me going one on one wit it at the third stage and me winning. The next two times was different due to the spirit balm stuff i use at the start of the fight.

In my first playthrough I didn't use the balistas and neither did I use any of the armies. the fight took a very long time, but that was mainly because of the darkspawn appearing more than trouble killing the Archdemon. I wouldn't worry about the group you listed.

Yeah as long as you have a healer and some serious amounts of poultices you'll be fine

The first time I played, I didn't even see the ballistas. The dwarves were tearing up the darkspawn, though, and my three NPCs were guarding me as I used my bow. Yeah, it took for freakin' ever, but it did eventually happen.

They jam, and you need device skill to fix them.

That happened the second time I did the final battle, but not the first.

I got through it allright with Alistair, DW Rogue, MOrrigan and Wynne on nightmare, so I guess you'll have no problem there at all...

And I've never noticed the ballistas, lol.. :P

Gah, will use them on my next run :P

In both my playthroughs, I just used almost nothing but the ballistas against the archdemon.

+1

Archdemon is about the 20th hardest fight in the game - if you can make it there you can beat him, with or without these ballista things (which I'll have to check out next time I'm fighting him)

I'll add my .2 cents worth of, "Ballista's ??? WTF?"

No one told me bout no steenkin Ballista's.

Guess thats why I always made sure I had a semi decent ranged char with me. Good to know, I'll keep an eye out for them next time.

During that part of the fight where the archdemon goes to that special area where the melee cant get it it is nice to have some good ranged attack weapons on your characters. I always equip a bow on my tank whether it is PC or Allister. As a former WoW tank i like to pull mobs to a cleaned area to fight. I also like to call the Dalish archers in for that last part as they are good bowmen and add some ranged attack. You could consider using the Mages there as well, i prefer the Dalish as there are more of them than the Mages which helps with the regular darkspawn that the AD send after you when it hides.
