Technically, with this build Nightmare was pretty easy. I daresay it's more overpowered than mages.

For those who are playing without the abuse of Mana Clash, Glyph of Nuetralizaiton, etc it is quite powerful.

However, most players are drawn to these abilities, especially on their first couple play throughs so I doubt the majority is going to find this overpowered.

Depending on your party composition it could very well trivialize the playthrough, though I doubt so much as the various crowd control Mage abilities.

If anything, they need to tone Taunt down. Using it once makes anything and everything glue to you for the remainder of the encounter. You could literally play the entire game with no abilities but Taunt and a [Enemy: range -> short or medium range -> Taunt] tactic.

That's the point. Though Many times enemies unstick from the tank. At the same time, the tank can get overwhelmed and die pretty easily on Nightmare. All it takes is 1 sneeze and your tank can be irreversably damaged. With only one (Very weak actually) Healing spell for non-Spirit Healers, and 1 really good, but delayed healing ability, the biggest threat is when all those 1's and 2's add up to 300damage in 5 seconds and you tank is bleeding to death on the floor.

I'm playing nightmare as a lvl 10 templar dwarf with 100% spell resistance and tbh he doesn't even come close to getting killed

Possibly because hes wearing tier 6 & 7 stuff at lvl 10? But not even swarms of physical dmg mobs beating on him even hurts him

I have a mage and I never found redcliffe hard, prolly because i actually use grease fire, mindblast and spells other than crushing prison and glyph of repulsion.

Random tank playthrough rant : I hate how nobody in the party does dmg worth **** when I'm not the DD its driving me nuts

So I put on blood thirst and precise striking and its still driving me nuts

So I snapped , I said **** this and I'm going Zevran decked out in the best stuff now that I managed to get him to the lvl to have enough talent points for coup de grace combat movement & Lethality (Stupid pre chosen crap he comes with!) (Shakes fist)

He has no lockpicking skills at all like Lelianna does , but **** it I'm going with the dmg over the treasure

If you look at the OP, he mentions the main reason for getting Veshialle is for the 3 rune slots. He also noted Starfang as being an alternative and if you got Wardens Keep, you should be able to get a cutscene where get metallic ore that you can give the blacksmith there to make Starfang for nothing.

To answer your question, I think there is ways you could do it, I know I got spellward and some other nice high price stuff in one playthrough and this was without doing any lyrium pot selling or any console commands/duplication cheat

Thanks Ulrich, I guess that means it's do-able but would mean being a bit of a scrooge elsewhere.

On the subject of the 3 rune thing I don't have Warden's Keep and I don't remember coming across any 1-handed 3 rune weapons on my first playthrough that weren't in a store (and mighty expensive). I might have a look around the game and see what I can find.

The Keening Blade and Topsider's Honor both got 3 rune slots. The latter one is very easy to get.

I notice that as a templar whos invincible to magic I actually don't even bother making Morrigan mana clash I just run in to the mage enemy and taunt and then beat his ass lol

Someone needs to start an AI improvement project and make the AI the way it was in BG2, I remember the AI targeting my mages almost exclusively in that game and leaving the warriors and clerics for last.

Grab Sten and Oghren.  You can make them glass cannons, stacking Strength for damage, since they're not going to be targetted anyway.  Towards the end, they were consistently doing 80-100ish damage per swing.  Bigger if they crit.

You deal ok damage until Keening Blade.  But still, it helps to have heavy fighters.

If you're having trouble with mobs hurting you physically you're probably not pumping Dexterity.

Strength beyond your gear requirements are wasted points, especially with a Templar/Champion. Holy Smite, Taunt, and War Cry are enough to hold enemy attention and none require Strength to be effective.

I personally take Allistair's Strength to 38 and let Key to the City and Andruil's Blessing bring him to 42 in order to wear Corruption at the end of the game. I bring his Cunning to 16 and the rest gets dumped into Dexterity. His Defense will be off the charts and untouchable by both Mages (duh) and any Physical Combatant.

For anyone having issues making money legitimately , check out my other post on profiting from crafting (Great for console users).

^ I recommend spending all your gold on Arcane Dust and leaving about 10 leftover intiially, then head to Denerim (The Inn) and start buying Flasks, Corrupter/Distilliation agents. Once you hit 60 gold in profit, you can start buying 99x Corrupter Agents and 99x Distillation Agents. Once you get to this point you're making 127 gold per stack of Potent Lyrium Potions.

You remember that ? Funny. I dont. At all.

In BG2 the mobs attacked whatever mob was closest. And didnt stopped at it. Ever. Mage could stand backward and throw fireballs at will, it didnt mattered.

A 100% Spell Resistance should also make you impossible to heal me thinks.

And the combat engine needs work if someone can be built to be impossible to physically hit.

Are there any rings that give a good spellresist% boost? I'd like to try this out. You can easily dump the Key to the City (4%) by using three Grandmaster Dwemer(sp?) runes instead - but I'd prefer to use another armor than Knight Commander, which obviously is rather essential to this build as of now.

Sorry for being dumb, but does spellresistance have anything to do with the single resistance options like fire or nature?

Without the Knight Commander's chest piece it is impossible to hit 100%. I use Key to the City because of its great stats along with the 4%. It's very pro-tank in stats.

Well "spell resistance" is actually a misnomer in the game; the toolset has the more accurate name of "ignore hostile magic" in its list of properties.

I'm currently trying a spell resistance build and it doesn't seem to protect me from my own spells like blizzard, inferno, tempest or walking bomb. Even at 100% spell resistance, and even on normal difficulty. Has this been changed with the latest patch?

Oh shoot. I was looking for the places to actually get those runes and ended up necro-ing a 3 month old thread ...

tranj84cl wrote...

To make it completely fair, being immune to spells should mean you can't be healed.

Completely fair ? It would be pointless to make such a character.

Tank without healing  = dead meat.

Its been written above it doesnt work on PC this way. Only protects from enemy mages there.

Yep. One can be healed when in a Forcefield, too.

Well, since the thread has been Necro'd anyway, you can get 2 Grandmaster Dweomer Runes in the game. One is bought from Cesar after completing the 'Trial of Crows' quests. The other is looted off of Kolgrim.

Personally, I don't like giving the Key to the City to Alistair, as it's far too good to be given up to a non-PC party member. To that end, there are actually a couple of things you can do that will still allow you to get him to 100% Spell Resistance without the Key to the City.

1. Use the Ancient Elven Gloves. These have a higher Armor rating, but you have to deal with their looks.

2. Use the Antivan Leather Boots (gotten by gifting them Zevran, then removing them after the dialogue). These have a slighly lower Armor rating, but they are hidden under the 'skirt' of the Knight Commancer''s Plate, so you don't actually see them.

Other than that, the OP is spot on.
