How do I confirm which patch I have? Won't import my Shepard.

Run that, then select the "Game" option on the left side to view which version your files are. That is how you can confirm that you have 1.02.

With patch 1.02 there are no errors while importing a Shepard from ME2, but it's still bugged. You'll never have your old Shepard just by importing him/her; you must adjust the imported face; thankfully ME3 allows you to work on an imported face without resetting it to the default face. Well, this import feature was buggy in ME2 too. There was no way to get the Shepard you built in ME1; besides, you couldn't work on any imported face. A slight improvement, isn't it?
If your Shepard is not importing correctly following the 1.02 patch, then try deleting the "face code" from the Mass Effect 2 save file using Gibbed's save editor for Mass Efect 2.
Mass Effect 2 did not allow modification of imported Mass Effect Shepards because the Mass Effect 2 character creator featured different feature presets than did the Mass Effect creator. As such, no slider positions existed to exactly represent imported Mass Effect characters and thus no modification could occur. Rather than replicate this perfect method of importing the total facial data, Mass Effect 3 attempted to import the "face code", if present, to reconstruct the face using the Mass Effect 3 character creator sliders. Because these slider positions differ from their equivalents in Mass Effect 2, the resulting characters often appear substantially different. Mass Effect 1 appearances, which have no associated face code, returned an error prior to the recent patch due to the incompetent means by which appearance importation was coded.
The patch introduces an approximation routine to rebuild a Shepard when no face code is present. This approximation is demonstrably imperfect (a fan-made application allows for more accurate reproduction of FemShep appearances), but it is typically more accurate than is replication from a face code. Unfortunately, if a face code is present then the face code is used for facial reconstruction first. This is especially problematic if an incorrect face code is attached to a save file (this can occur for some faces originating in Mass Effect). Using a save editor to remove the face code will force the game to rely upon the approximation method, which may produce a better -- if still imperfect -- result.

Not only am I a poster boy for poor hand-eye coordination - you'll see this in multi-player as I badly miss another melee attack - I am "highly challenged" when it comes to current game modding. I couldn't even construct simple things using the Dragon Age Toolset or the Winter Forge. The last method that worked well for me was the tilde option in ME. I used that a lot. But thank you Dimensio. I downloaded the ME2 save editor from the Bioware social forums and will try it out.

Using the ME2 save editor I was able to create a new save file and remove the face code. There were changes to the imported face (hair color) but it wasn't close to what I had. Oh well, I just edited features to my liking and started a new game. Thanks again, everyone, for your help.
Unfortunately, the Lazarus Project only works with Female Shepards. Additionally, several hairstyles were altered and some were even removed from the game entirely.
