This little hypothesis of mine works within the framework of the current, incomplete, disappointing endings - and will not need anything to be retconned, merely reimagined.
We all know that Shepard can survive the Destroy ending with a sufficient EMS. But why does Shepard survive if Starchild states that s/he will die along with the geth and EDI? Is Starchild a liar? Perhaps, but not pertinent to this hypothesis.
It could be because of heroic willpower, but this isn't a shonen anime.
It could be because a lower EMS means Shield are unable to prevent a Reaper from potshotting Shepard just before it dies.
Or... it could be (and this should happen - give players something to work for) that a perfectly constructed - undamaged Crucible is capable of destroying the Reapers without any friendly fire. This fits pretty well into the themes the Mass Effect series has shown in general - that individual sacrifice may be inevitable, but if you play your cards right and keep your wits peeled, most of it can be prevented - and moral atrocity is never the only option. Since a lot of users on this board consider Synthesis an atrocity, and Control highly risky, a Destroy ending that takes a massive amount of military strength to achieve, but if your cards throughout the series were played right - could result in a new dawn for every species, and for Shepard and his/her chosen allies and romantic interest, too - would leave a lot of people with a new reason to invest in this series.
This is, of course, assuming that Destroy is the Crucible's original purpose, and Control and Synthesis are Starchild's repurposing, and that the Mass Relays don't blow up violently like Arrival, but instead merely fall apart, and can be repaired, like developer tweets have already stated to a degree.
And as for sequels, they could be based off of the best versions of all three endings. (Max EMS version, no extinction of krogan, quarians, geth, possibly rachni) And going with how the end choices in previous games have been significant, but not game-changing - it could work like this.
Destroy: Play as a biological or adoptive desendant of Commander Shepard, and recieve individual boosts to all stats worthy of your pedigree.
Control: Have increased Reaper technology, improving shielding, tech, biotics, and weapons by a small but substantial amount.
Synthesis: Get bonuses for sticking close to active squadmates, and use the circuit board graphic on every sentient character.
I just had to get this off my chest now, as BioWare and EA are finalizing the plot board for the Extended Cut, among other things.
If it's not worth a toss, say so! If you like it, say that too!
If you don't care - just leave it be!
Golden Destroy? (Not indoc theory)
