I haven't played a shooter since Fallout: New Vegas was released. Any suggestions for my first playthrough of Mass Effect 2? I plan on being a female. Any classes to avoid the first playthrough? Plan on playing on normal the first time through.

My only advice is; powers are really really good. Sabotage and Overload for engineers, Lift and Singularity for biotics. The game isn't all that difficult on medium difficulties, so you should be fine as long as you aren't deliberately screwing around.
The only negative tactical experience I had in ME1 was that sniper rifles are kinda bad, but it might just be that I didn't skill them enough or something. In any case, it's well established that you can play ME1 through with pistols to great effect, so whatever weapon you want to use beyond that is purely personal preference.

Decided to be an infiltrator for my first play though. Always was good at using a sniper rifle.

I would suggest girsr r ime aeround being a soldier and mainly get used to the weaponsas most of the time the majority of the enemies can be takeen down erasonably easily with weapons in the instances where you think that may not be the case take one of your biotic teammates with you foe extra fireopower as biotic abilities can be pretty effective against shielding

Infiltrator is somewhat forgiving. Just don't read my thread about them
Anyway a couple things to keep in mind...
Overload should be your go-to ability against enemies with shields (blue health bar), that or rapid fire weapons. The SMG's have a bonus to shield damage, and Shotguns can get an upgrade to shields. In a pinch you can use your Incinerate against shields if need be.
Barriers (purple health) are also vulnerable to the above weapons. Warp and Reave are the biotics that deal damage to barriers. If you have to, you can use Incinerate there as well. Overload is usable, but suboptimal, and so is Cryo Blast.
Armor (yellow health) is vulnerable to slow firing weapons, these being the pistols and sniper rifles. Incinerate is the best ability versus armor, but Warp and Reave are ok against it.
Assault Rifles are sort of alright against all the above, but are not a standard weapon on Infiltrator.
Regular health is a red bar, which is all most enemies should have on Normal. An enemy has to only have a red bar to be vulnerable to biotic effects like Pull or Throw.
Once you are allowed to have a bonus power, Neural Shock is probably the best there is for an Infiltrator. It rounds out the crowd control abilities and makes the character more versatile. Plus it is good with only 1 pt in it and has a rapid cooldown.
Your starting weapons will be Shuriken, Predator and Mantis. The Shuriken is actually very good once upgraded, and if you can get hits on the head. If you rapidly press the trigger it will seem like it is fully automatic, even though it is burst fire. That will not be accurate at all at range, but will do a lot of damage up close.
Predator is actually very accurate and usable for sniping. Why would you need it for that? The Mantis rifle has pretty poor ammo capacity, which is the main problem with it. As such, an Infiltrator can't really be purely a rifle marksman early game. As such, I recommend learning how to use the other two weapons well, and investing in Incinerate pretty early (at the very least get 1 pt).
Miranda is a versatile squad member, and I recommend taking her with you on most missions. She also has a passive bonus to squad health that may help you in your first game. She has Overload and Warp, which covers every defense type.

After beating the game couple times, I realized I liked the Sentinel class the best. I wish I started out being a soldier, but the infiltrator was fun. Really like using the sniper rifle. How do you max out paragon / renegade?

Harder in ME2 because even filling the bar doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a particular paragon/renegade conversation option. You can either game it at the expense of role play and only ever choose top or bottom replies in conversations, or you can boost your initial paragon and/or renegade scores by importing an ME1 character with heaps of both, or you can use one of the glitches to get you infinite morality points (effective but also a time consuming pain in the arse that breaks game flow while you're doing it). Aside from an imported character the best thing you can do in game to boost paragon and renegade scores is to max out your class power as soon as you can and choose the specialisation that gives you a 100% bonus to both morality scores. Since you've said you're laying an Infiltrator the specialisation you want to pick is Agent. You won't gain quite as much on the sniper slowdown time or weapon damage but the morality boost is 100% rather than 70% and you get more health and faster recharge times on your powers.gaurdian9sunshine wrote...
