And I made a mage, how should I level him up? What stats do I put points in and what skills should I invest in?

That's a loaded question. A mage isn't just a mage. Attributes are fine: Magic and Willpower, with some Con if you're going Blood Mage. Spells are trickier.
Blood Mages nukers and Spirit Healer buffers are going to have vastly different spell choices.

Is a mage good for me to start out as, or should I be rouge or warrior?
And what do you think would be the best for beginners?

You get a look at all the classes through your allies. modified but decent view
nothing wrong with a mage to beginners. Your first spec should be Force. you dont need to use blood mage or spirit healer abilities. if you want more health, go blood mage, if you want more mana go spirit healer.
I would suggest you stick to elemental for the most part. Get chain lightning and upgrade it, stone fist or tempest make a great 2nd spell from primal.
If you dont want spoilers and want to learn about how tactics work in this game, click the link in my signature. it will also give you an idea how to build your companions and yourself.

Your rolling DA2 right? It's always good to atleast take the first and second healing spell in the creation tree. For my first mage I went that way and took fire and ice XD Very fun. But all the spells seem fun to me. Just try them out and see what you like best and what will fit your party.

I do this as well. Healing spell then pick a damage tree. You can always head to the Emporium to re-allocate if you decide you don't like it.

Magic=damage and spell accuracy. Willpower=mana. Constitution=health.
Do you want to be more of a damage dealer, or healer/support?
Do you have access to the black emporium and the Maker's Sigh potions? Those items let you reset your attributes and talents, so you can always fix your build if you screw up somewhere.
As mentioned, I'd go with the heal spells first, then mind blast and rock armor for added survivability. From there, focus on the elemental and primal trees for damage, or perhaps the creation and spirit healer trees for healing+support.

I really like force mage and that entropy (or something) it really wiped the floor with the Arishok. Where i had to worry as rogue/warrior and expected mage to be harder it was way to easy.
