I was in the middle of a multiplayer match when suddenly the game locks up, locks up my entire computer, and all i can hear is a horrable electronic squeal over my head phones.  The image on my screen pixalated a bit with some oddly shadded pixeles here and there.

What additional information can I provide that will help you guys figure out what happened?

I think your game just crashed. Press ctrl+alt+del and open task manager - you should be able to terminate dead process. To get rid of horrible sound you need to disable and then re-enable your soundcard in device manager or just reboot your PC.

Had this problem few times with ME2 and once with ME3.

sounds like you need to put the game cartridge back in after blowing it... if that doesn't work it needs to be cleaned with cartridge solution and a nice cotton ball wisk.

in all goodness it sounds like a crash. lucky you didnt get a blue screen.

I know that the game crashed, but when it did, it locked everything up, I could not ctrl+alt+del, alt+tab, anything, I have to reboot my computer by turning it off then back on.

Like I said, it locks the computer up.

If the sound you're hearing is a small fragment of sound infinitely repeated, then you probably got something like a bsod. Anyway, it sounds like ME3 is crashing your Windows, in which case the only thing I would think, you can do, is to tinker around with your graphics settings, and of course always have the latest drivers installed :)

you do realise games havent used cartridges since the n64 stopped being manufactured. also i wasent aware that mass effect needed a cd in the drive to run.

this sounds like the infamous Nvidia memory leak dont know why but unreal based games can cause issues with nvidia chipsets. well more notably the 8XXX series.

also i suggest running the game in windowed borderless mode. even if the game KO's completely you should still be able to get back to your desktop.
even if you cant see or access your desktop try this little trick

press the windows key wait a second than press windows+r even if nothing comes up try typing
"taskkill /f /im masseffect3.exe" than press enter
if your lucky the windows command parser is still working and you can forcibly terminate the locked up game

btw i have confirmed this bug in

Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 3
Global Agenda
Unreal Tournament 4 Black Eddition

And youll never guess what all these games have in common .

They are all based on the Unreal Engine

Recently on multiplayer, there's been an electronic buzzing every time I'm in a match. I haven't played in the last couple of days. But the noise is irritating.

To the OP, games crash sometimes and occasionally it will lock up your entire computer. Repeating horrible sounds is not unusual. Do a hard restart and as long as it doesn't happen frequently, just forget about it.

I've been having this exact same problem, with an Nvidia card, and it has been happening frequently.
so it is a little worrying
