I don't understand why people care so much about topping the board to begin with. There is little competitive elements in the game (if any). And yes it is very possible to prioritize objectives and revives and still be at the top. Being first doesn't necessarily imply a 'lone wolf' attitude.

While this is true (again, because most people are only talking about beating Joe PuG), OPTIMIZING your score requires some counterproductive behavior.

Well sure but at the end of the day, you get the same exp/credits. I would personally care only if I was experimenting with a build or a weapon I haven't used before. Besides, I firmly believe that it doesn't really take that much skill to do well or be close to the top with a GPS, Carni, (Black) Widow etc.

I usually get 3rd or second with like a 1k margin though I had an insane silver round where I got 1st and while it's not the first time it was super fun

Oh, I'm not saying you should care.   Quite the opposite.  Caring about scores is silliness considering the behavior that would be required to truly optimize your score.

What is this thread supposed to be? Some kind of pointless internet gaming moral high ground debate?

"YOU GUYS AREN'T AS GOOD AS YOU THINK YOU ARE YOU ARE PRETTY MUCH PLAYING WITH CASUALS ALL THE TIME YEAHHHHHH"

People will play the game the way they have fun playing it, and it cuts both ways.

For me, there's literally no point in playing if I'm not going to be at the top of the scoreboard. Why try to discredit the people who play this way? If it brings me boundless joy to watch all my teammates die and emphatically not lift a finger to help them, is that so wrong? That's part of why I choose builds tailored to the enemy we're fighting so that I'm confident I can solo every round.

I understand that this generation of internet users are wont to post drivel in search of empassioned responses, "trolling", it's called. Maybe that's what you're trying to do here, and I'm walking right into it.

Whatever.

If you actually read what I wrote you'd notice that has nothing to do with my point.

I didn't say playing to top the board is the wrong way to play, I said topping the board itself in a public game isn't some kind of absolute validation of your superior ability as so many seem to believe it is.

I love to try to top the board in pubs while being a benefit to my team, casual freindly contest is fun!

I top the scoreboards when farming GWG with a Salarian Engineer LIKE A BAWS

Unfortunately, that just means my teammates suck, not that I'm great. I posted 124K today on GWG, and the second closest guy was 60-something lmfao. We still got full extraction, but I had to solo Wave 9 with Cobra missiles 'cuz everyone just ran off trying to get kills. While farming GWG. ugh.

If I'm the top scoring player in the team, then I know for definite we got a ****ty team. I'd rather just have a decent and fun match with a good team, as in a team that works as a team not charging off somewhere

I don't see anything wrong with this logic. If you're always first on gold, then obviously your build is viable. Maybe not optimal, but viable.

Even if you're a good player, you'd have a hard time topping the scoreboard on gold with a human soldier with a predator pistol.

Sure, if people actuallu calimed they did that regularly.

It's not that extreme, it's more like:

"Actually, I do know what I'm talking about because I'm almost always first!"

And so on.

If you can do it with horrid guns and sub-optimal builds then of course you're very good, but that's not the focus here.

Its not that difficult to score points, doesn't matter if you are acting as a tank, a lone wolf, or support.

If you are attacking the enemies with a variety of methods, you are rewarded and at times they build up other reward categories
If you are performing mission tasks, you are rewarded... Hell, sometimes hacking is more beneficial than hunting... Especially since they come to you
If you are reviving your teammates, you are rewarded

Too much emphasis is placed on score by the shallow... You should be concerned in your ability to keep your team alive and successfully defeating your enemies with limited equipment used to revive, restore your shields, using rockets, and ammo packs... If you have a good team, You wouldn't need none.

Most of you use that number to validate yourselves and its sad... Other than leveling up... Which again is based on your ability... It don't mean anything

While I always like to push myself to do better and better, I focus more on my average than beating a certain player. (If only scoring 60000 on gold, then I dont care if I beat the others cause it was awful game) However, there are sometimes that I go into a game knowing that I wont be on top, but we'll beat the gold match pretty easily.

Point in fact, is that when me and my buddies are playing Giant, we have three shooters up top to pick off the enemies and I go downstairs to ensure that no one flanks the squad. The vast majority of enemies spawn topside and rush the three shooters, and most matches I just have to deal with the random hunter/phantom that decides to get cute and try and come up behind us.

Ultimately, being on the top of the scoreboard means nothing if you dont get past wave 10.

I could live without coop leaderboards. Then maybe more people would try to be mvp, which can't always be quantified.

Question is did you top the board because youre a gaming god dragging three other players who did nothing along on your twinkly cape or did you top it because a solid team allowed you to kill stuff effortlessly? :P

Kills are important but if you wanna be a good player you need to contribute more than that imo and the scores dont reflect that sometimes. Seen top scorers who where absolute liabilities to the team, seen people land last place who nevertheless played solid and made things easier for everybody. Besides you can spot baddies and goodies without the scores after a while.

Me im mostly thirdish because ive gotten lazy >_<

I rarely lead on the scoreboards. I'm not bad, I'm just not that great either. I'm not generally a multiplayer kinda guy.

If I'm first, I'm pissed.

It means that I, the support player on Engineer/Sentinel is doing more damage/killing more priority targets than my team's infiltrator/adept who are either slacking or just plain bad.

Having to carry a team for 30 minutes is just not fun and waste my items. If I'm second beind an infiltrator, it's good, we are gonna kill bosses fast, if i'm third behind infil/adept, we are clearing the game in <20 minutes, it's awesome.

But sadly it does happen a lot of time, with the sheer number of high CD Sniper engineer with no clue about Tech combos, infiltrators that manage to suck with a valiant/black widow or Stasis sniper adepts...

Then you go to the forum and read about "No overload GPR spec for Gengineer !" and "No incinerate double heavy weapon build for Qengineer!" and just feel like screaming.

Score does not equal skill, but still gives you a rough idea of who is pulling his weight/has a clue about what to do.

I know the game is coop and all that blah blah

But I really wish their were other leaderboards than just your N7 ranks. I got to 600 and couldn't care less to raise it any higher and instead like switching off between classes in between matches. I just wish there was more scoreboards that showed total headshots, total boss kills, accuracy... stuff that would be really boast worthy.

Not that it will happened...

I normally top the scoreboard on my main classes, altough I don't care that much about the score.

Yestuday I had one person spam 5 rockets at Wave 10 all the time.

He either loved his rockets or wanted to outscore me.

I didn't really matter to me, seeing as a consumable spammer made the wave easier for us. As long as it's not my rockets :P

A couple thoughts: people who always get 2-3rd on the board don't tend to go bragging about it.

''My [insert build] always gets 3rd place. It's the best!'' -not something to declare (usually)

I usually play support classes/roles. My AA spends lots of time dropping stasis when she sees people are getting swamped. Or stassing (is that a word?) the Phantom- for a sniper to get the best shot. Or waiting by the back door in the round room on Dagger for the random guys who surprise the main strike group.

So some people have the other feeling. If I make it to the top of the board, I'm not happy as I probably shouldn't be there.

Score can be a rough diagnostic, like I'm doing here. Am I first? There's a problem. I shouldn't have to do the stasissing AND have enough time to finish the Phantom off just by myself. If there's a huge outlier, then it's worth at least investigating.

Actually, 55% of my games contain at least one person from the forum that knows me.

I find it disturbing sometimes....

Errr... what?  Stasising (ONCE!) and then blowing the faces off phantoms yourself is pretty much exactly what you should be doing.
