I believe Hale does better on average, but there are a few lines she just flat out ruins because she overacts on them. This completely breaks immersion for me. Meer's delivery is more stoic, which also has the added benefit that when he does put in emotion, it stands out. In contrast, with Hale I have come to expect a voice of total bliss and ecstasy, simply from completing a fetch quest.

And then there is "How are you doing, Jacob...*purr purr*".

Hale and Meer are great, but in ME3 Meer outdid himself with a performance I find to be much better than Hale's. It's really amazing.

I think Meer has gotten better each game and Hale has gotten worse.

I may be one of a few people who actually thought Meer did an outstanding job in ME1. I mean, his lines are deliberately understated, but there is definitely emotion there. Maybe it's just that I know a lot of people who speak with that kind of understatement... maybe it's an Edmontonian thing. It seemed to me that when so much VO in games is extremely overacted, it was a breath of fresh air.

Then again, I've followed Hale since Quest for Glory IV, and I've loved every performance by her thus far. I haven't played ME3 with femShep yet, but I don't think she'll disappoint there, either...

Now don't get me wrong here, I like Jennifer Hale as a voice actor. I loved her in KOTOR and other stuff, but to me I have to raise an eyebrow every time that I see a thread turn into nothing but six pages of people quoting each other going "oh my gawd jenifer hale is sooooooo amazin111!" usually people with FemShep avatars and followed by a slurry of hate towards "the lesser" Mark Meer.

To be me Jennifer Hale tried too hard with FemShep. Yes, Meer sounded rather bored and monotone in Mass Effect 1, in the sequel they matched up pretty damn well but in Mass Effect 3 he overtook Hale in my personal opinion. When I hear FemShep I hear somebody desperately trying to look tough, straining their throat as much as possible to look like they're putting emotion into the character. It just doesn't fit. Compare the Trooper in the TORtanic to her as FemShep and you can see there is a noticable difference in quality; she does great as the Trooper because she isn't trying too hard to be a generic OTT tough girl half-shouting every line.

If you read these forums you would think she had the voice of the angels themselves. I don't think Meer gets the respect he deserves frankly, especially considering how much he drastically improved between now and the original games. Maybe it's just female gamers trying to rally to "their" side I don't know.

Flame away.

I was at least giving you the benefit of the doubt until you said "TORtanic".  That turned your post, in my mind, into someone dancing around going HURR HURR HURR.

2 million subscribers is the titanic, now?  I mean, really?  Do people honestly expect a game that's a few months old to overtake 9 million subscribers from a 7 year old game?  The fact that they nabbed up 2 that fast is impressive on it's own.

Further, Hale > Meer, by far.

The rest of your post is meandering and it sounds like flamebait.

A poll would be curious, but I vote Meer for king of the voices.

I don't like the way everything seems to so soft spoken in ME3 and especially if you choose the renegade options, it's still the same way even though it's supposed to be more "badass". Even during cutscenes when it's normal talk it's like she's playing Mom or something and trying to smooth things over between two fighting kids. I don't know, her voice in ME3 just irks me. I thought it was good in 1 & 2 however.

I think Meer did the better job in this game. Even with the whole "STEVE" thing.

I'm glad i'm not the only person who finds her extremely overrated. I enjoyed her performance for the one time I played a Femshep, but i didn't see the godlike performance everyone seemed to shout about. She really isn't better than Meer and the pair of them are outshone by some of the secondary characters in my opinion.

Finally, someone who pointed out something I noticed since ME 1. I never wanted to start a thread on it because I was afraid of a biblical uprising.

Anyway, it's definitely not that Jennifer Hale is a bad actress, but to best describe how I feel she portrays her FemShep is "forced."

It just feels like with certain lines she tries too hard to be bad ass Commander Shepard and it comes off sounding unnatural. I have always liked the way Mark Meer did Commander Shepard. A lot of people seemed to have though him as bad acting or monotone, but I saw him playing the military guy through and through. Not very emotional, but as ME 2 and 3 started going by he became more invested and more affected by the fates of his friends and comrades.

I still enjoy Jennifer Hale as a VA, just maybe not as my Commander Shepard.

I like them both, but I agree that Meer got a lot of undeserved criticism by the Hale fans.

To the people who think Hale is overrated, do me a favor. Check out the scene where Dr Eva is getting away in the shuttle where Shepard yells "James! Normandy! Anyone!". See if you can find that specific line by both Femshep and broshep. The difference is ridiculous - Meer is *completely* flat. I agree that Meer has improved a lot since ME1, but I don't think he can even approach Hale in acting ability.

Also, some people seem to just prefer Meer's voice, which is a tangential point. I can understand personal preference, but to assert that he's a better actor is silly.

IIRC part of the problem with Hale's performance with FemShep is she was the first one to do any recording at all for Mass Effect 3 and with how much of the dialogue is pieced together it does have a harder time blending together.

Overall I find bother Meer and Hale have their good and bad points in the ME3 dialogue and can't pick one over the other.

I think she's good, but not as amazing as some other people tend to profess. But I guess that's normal whenever you like an actor or whatever, you don't see anything objectively because you like them. :)

It's normal.

I don't think she's overrated herself, but rather in comparison with Mark Meer. I love her work as Bastilla especially, and, to a lesser degree, as Aayla Secura, but, where ME3 is concerned, I think overall Meer did a slightly better job.

One factor in the whole thing is that every line is approved by the voice director. So if either Hale or Meer sound odd or flat or their voice doesn't seem to fit to one scene then the only one you can really blame is the voice director. They only read lines off a sheet of paper and have to go by the directions they get. It's not as if they would actually see any cut scene whatsoever.

I heard some dialogues in this game where you really want to rip your ears off because it sounds so off.....but in the end...that was apparently what the voice director was aiming for?! Can't really blame it on either Meer or Hale I would say!

YES. I totally agree.

She's not bad, she just doesn't sound..right. Like she's always trying to be tough, and I feel like she's always bored or doesn't know the context of the scenes. It always sounds so off.

She doesn't come off sounding powerful or commanding, most of the time she just sounds like a ****ty cop trying to act tough.

Some lines in ME1 by Mark Meer were a bit..dull. But I think his voice fits Shepard much better and he's improved so much in 2 and 3, I could never make a femshep mainly due to the Voice Actor.

Hale sounds fantastic in all scenes but the ones where she's being “tough”. It just degrades to charicatured yelling. I can live with that, though. She's just so good everywhere else, especially all the squad/LI/crew interaction.

Meer I just can't stand. I don't know why, for me it just feels like he's reading a script where Hale can actually sound like living the character. Meer's certainly very good in the action shouting, but I always quit during the third non-action scene at the latest.

I think Hale is way better when it comes to the friendly casual dialogue between Shepard and his crew but the Mark Meer is imo better in the more dramatic and emotional scenes.
But overrated? No, she does an awesome job voicing Shepard all three games. The voice acting is still better than in nearly any other title. (I think it is even better than Uncharted or Heavy Rain, just because the actors actually grew with their roles).

I truly think this is a matter of preference. I also felt that Hale sometimes try to hard to be tough but overall, I prefer her performance. I still can't play as broshep 'cause I feel that he sounds too monotone. I think most girl gamers will think Hale does wonderful job in ME3 and I believe usually female is much more emotional than male.

My view is Meer was good in ME1 as renegade and that was consistent through all 3 games. His paragon has improved since ME1. Hale was better at paragon in ME1 but her renegade has never been all that great. The scene that comes to mind is the tone she used in ME2 to tell Kal' Reegar to stand down. It was over the top.
