Jennifer Hale is overrated.

ME1 - Hale (Manshep was boring)
ME2 - Meer/Hale (They both did a great job)
ME3 - Meer (See above)

Forget Hale, forget Meer... Blum FTW!!!!
Blum just does the same voice for every role. It's an awesome manly voice but it is still the same voice. Every. Time.
He's the Sean Connery of voice acting.

She's Canadian and didn't quite capture the southern accent in Gears of War 3, but that's fine. Most non-southern actors fail at a good southern accent.

Makes me think "that's the awesome Jennifer Hale they talk so much about? really?".
Meer was awesome on 2 and 3.

Both are great voice actors in their own right, I just think that Hale delivers most of her lines just a little better than Meer!
Again, that's just my opinion

I also want to express that I agree with everyone who says that Mark Meer is underrated. He might sound less emotional sometimes, but he did a great job in ME3 and revealed greater dimension of character for Sheploo.

From what I have heard of her work, its was pretty decent, but at times flat, monotone, and nasally. It just doesn't do anything for me.
Yet, I hear that MANY people say the same thing about Meer's work! I think to myself - wait - that cannot be. Everything I hate about Hales voice people hear in Meer's voice? Interesting! I am beginning to think that it has something to do with how we hear our own voices in our head.

I used to think they were both quite good. But the rabidness of Femshep fanboys/fangirls made me actively hate Femshep (and by extension, but not nearly as much, Jennifer Hale). To the point that I can't bring myself to look at any art, video or stories starring her. Even a while back, someone recommended Jennifer Hale should work on the next DA in the DA forums, and I just felt a sensational fury boil within me.
Just hearing Femshep's voice makes me angry these days.

1) I will have to respectfully disagree, as I enjoy her performance as FemShep and prefer it.
2) Jennifer Hale is well liked for a reason, so while you may not like her work, she must be doing something right if so many people do like her. Just sayin'.
3) It does seem like people tend to like whomever they started with, or whomever they feel fits their idea of what Shepard should sound like. Thankfully we were given some options instead of just one choice.
4) I will add that I think Mark Meer has gotten better over time in the series.

And I feel as though Mark Meer's performances improved exponentially over the trilogy while Jennifer's stayed about the same.
They are both good, but I feel like Meer is more talented in his range and vocal ability.

If you read these forums you would think she had the voice of the angels themselves. I don't think Meer gets the respect he deserves frankly, especially considering how much he drastically improved between now and the original games. Maybe it's just female gamers trying to rally to "their" side I don't know.
Flame away.
Nothing to do with female gamers. I'm male and I always praise Hale's work.
Do I think that she has her cringeworthy moments? Of course she does. It stands to reason that no actor is always good. I really hated how my Shepard said some of her lines in the conversation with Gavin Archer in ME3 for example. Every angry sentence was really overacted.
But those are few and far between. The fact of the matter for me is simply this:
1) I don't like Mark Meer's voice. He could be the best actor to have ever lived and that would still not change. I just don't like how his voice sounds.
2) I don't believe Male Shepard. He feels like an acted character. FemShep feels real. I don't really know how to describe it differently. I just don't feel BroShep. He doesn't convince me.

His voice acting for the most part has been right on the money. So much so that his take on Commander Shepard has often reminded me of Staff NCOs and Mustangs (officers that are prior enlisted), that I knew while I served in the Marine Corps. When a line requires some emotion he is much more subtle than Hale generally, which makes his version of Commander Shepard feel more authentic as a combat leader. Male Shep feels like a stoic career military man, whereas Fem Shep emotes too much.

Jennifer Hale is one of the best voice actors in gaming, but I also think she is highly overrated by her fans when it comes to Mass Effect. She was good as Commander Shepard, but Mark Meer was great.

^This. She emotes too much, and on top of that it feels forced when she tries to sound badass. I've seen officers acting like this (i.e. forcing their voice to try and sound "badass"), and I can assure you everyone was rolling their eyes in the ranks, and this has nothing to do with the fact that she is a woman.
