The sunken elven city...............................

The first thing that comes to mind is Atlantis. Although this one is under water there is no information about how the elven city was sunk/vanished from the face of the earth and how it would look like Image IPB.

Here are some impressions, picture them in some kind of underground cave:

Very different styles which all could be possible for the eternal ancient Elves.......................Image IPB

@Das Tentakel

Oooh, your link really looks creepy Image IPB.

Could it be that the darkspawn found the Elven city while they were looking/digging for an Old God?

Do not want to think about what they would have done to it.............Image IPB

But here is another theory:
There
is magic involved as you stated to sink the city. What if some of the
ancients mage elves were able to cast some kind of counterspell that
would let them stay alive for eternity in some kind of 'city in a
bubble' but underground not in water?

Image IPB Seen that kind of ancient surviving before in a game. (and even surfacing when the time was right)

Well,
in Lands of Lore II your character has some 'flashbacks' to what
happened prior and during the sinking of the Dracoid capital city. Some
Dracoids stayed behind in the city, but they mutated into serpentlike
monsters.

Wise old Elves 'doing the Gandalf' would be boring. Maybe they have...changed and developed a taste for man-flesh.
It has happened before with Elves [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/wink.png[/smilie].

One thing would be sure, though. They would not like humans.
As in: with a triple dose of extra hate and nastiness.

Sjpelkessjpeler,I have snipped one of your beautiful pics, but those I am quoting would be absolutely fantastic for a sunken Arlathan. As to how Arlathan actually vanished, the lore does not give us much to go on,but as it used to be situated near a large body of water,I think it is not entirely impossible that it is now an underwater realm.
And I am in love with the idea of a sunken city in a bubble.

This is what the Codex says:

"It is said that the Tevinter magisters used their great destructive power to force the very ground to swallow Arlathan whole, destroying eons of collected knowledge, culture, and art. The whole of elven lore left only to memory."
--"The Fall of Arlathan," as told by Gisharel, keeper of the Ralaferin clan of the Dalish elves

It does say that the ground swallowed it whole, but what if water broke in...

And here is the map :

Image IPB

Das Tentakel,I loved your Lands of Lore II link. The Dracoid capital city reminded me of the Sunken Kurshok Citadel in Thief Deadly Shadows. That has to be one of my favourite missions, sneaking around, whacking the Kurshok unconscious

But seriously, the Draconians seemed so much like the Kurshok with their twisted perception of the world above them, their loss of contact with reality, loss of language and culture, animosity towards every living thing from above....
Their sunken citadel oozed atmosphere...

The Sunken Arlathan could be something similar, although I would prefer sjpelkessjpeler`s first picture above.

Image IPB

Image IPB

And we could see artwork like this - the "lost elves" trying to record their downfall, maybe?

Another very interesting point of interest in Orlais are the sulfur lakes.

@Brockololly posted about them at page 3 of this thread and @Ericander77 made a thread on them on the BSN forum.

If we take a look on the map of Orlais the lakes are in an area left to a mountain range and the land looks pretty barren on the map.

Here are some additions to the subject that could fit in:

Image IPB are they dark and lifeless? Image IPB

Image IPB

Or light blue and clear?

Image IPB mountain range next to the sulfur lakes..........

Image IPB

Steamy even maybe? Image IPB

Image IPB sediments on the sides...

Image IPB
dried out yellow sulpfur in a close up that covers walls. Looks almost like a living thing Image IPB.

These are great ideas!  The Sulfur Lakes sound fascinating...and these images sum it up well!

I was considering the Arlathan Forest in general and found some nice images.  I'm not sure if what sort of forest it's meant to be, but these seem nice:

http://t0.gstatic.co...2cz9G1-MuBMtmYA

This above is from nature.desktopnexus.com

This below is from fwallpaper.net...I like the glow in it.  Perhaps the fading magic of the elves, or the magic used to sink Elvhenan?

http://t1.gstatic.co...nHsRv2KAxeQQyDQ

Lastly, I'm afraid the color here isn't caused by sulfur but by red algae in this volcanic lake--Simba lake--in the Chilean Andes.  It is an unusual climate, however, and might be food for thought for the blighted parts of the Anderfels...  The image is from fettss.arc.nasa.gov.

Those pictures look wonderfull Image IPB!

The forest pictures are completely different from one another and they could both very well be the Arlathan forest. They both have a great feel.

Your third picture looks desolate and abandonned. Like the Anderfells being tainted by the long lasting blight so long ago. Perfect find IMO Image IPB.

@sjpelkessjpeler : those images have completely blown away yours truly - my favourites are the first and the penultimate one.    <3

@WardenWade : Oh,thank you for those amazing additions! I loved the forest scene with the setting sun`s rays filtering through, painting the forest auburn. When I am out hiking / mountain biking, I can hardly wait for dusk, because it looks just like that!    <3

I agree with sjpelkessjpeler regarding your Sulfur Lake addition - that picture IS desolation itself. I so hope we do get to see some of the area in the next game    :innocent:

I will also throw in some more eye candy.
There are countless sights of breathtaking beauty Canada is worth visiting for,but this, for being so unusual,is on the top of my list :

Image IPB

The rest were taken elsewhere, but could also pass for the Sulfur Lakes :

@Begemotka those pictures are eye candy indeed Image IPB. Mother nature has presented us with the most unusual things. Especially your first picture looks like it is out of this world Image IPB.

Wonder if the area around the Sulfur Lakes is inhabited or not.............

Thank you!! :)  I like to think the first pic sort of looks like a forest growing out of perhaps a strange crater, or at least a valley where Arlathan had been.  Passages to the Deep Roads lie beneath, I imagine :)  I really like the atmospheric red haze in the second myself, and I think the red lake is an intriguing location.  It's an utterly alien place, like the Sulfur Lakes themselves :)  Your pictures are wonderful...I really love the green pools.  They're perfect, and look so evocative of what we see on the map!  Thank you for your kind comments!

These are all great pics and ideas, everyone! :)

Thank you so much!  Both forest images seemed to have a unique sense of atmosphere to me too, and I'm glad you liked them as well! :)  And the red lake is a truly strange place, as I understand it.  The water looks almost gelid and almost certainly undrinkable...and who can say what the taint does to the land?  I'm glad you liked it...Simba lake does seem abandoned, truly like another world :)

Great images as well, sjpelkessjpeler!  Amazing ideas!

Oh my,that is indeed Brynnlaw...   =]  20 /20 vision there berelinde,thanks :o)

@sjpelkessjpeler : thank you...the first image of the Spotted Lake (or Klikuk,as it is called in the local language) in British Columbia is really out of this world,as you said. They say it has healing powers   :P

I do hope the Sulfur lakes are not inhabited by Sulfur Shrieks or something, because if you had imagined a deafening silence adding to the creepiness of the place, shrieking would really break the immersion.
Oh,wait...Immersion in the Sulfur Lakes is potentially harmful to your health. Pardon the pun,I just had to.

@sjpelkessjpeler : thank you...the first image of the Spotted Lake (or Klikuk,as it is called in the local language) in British Columbia is really out of this world,as you said. They say it has healing powers   :P

Also, doesn't sulfur smell like arse? 'Cause the last thing you want is a Shriek running around screaming at you, stinking the place out!

I love the third one, I think it could be used to create some really creepy moments.

Lol. Yes,that would be....baaad. The stench could actually be their primary attack    =]

I love your pics, btw, and agree that we should see more snowed in areas.I just love running around, while snowflakes fall gently all around me....< insert poetic, dreamy music here> .
Snowstorms are (literally) cool,too....while indoors, looking out the window,of course :P

Sjpelkessjpeler pointed out the last pic-I have just noticed I posted it too:) But it can be found all over the net,and the copyright belongs to the owner:) But it is captivating.

@AnnieDear : Wow,that is really the original concept for the Fade?Ohh,if only it DID look like that in-game....
I do hope Bioware gets to visualize the Fade more closely resembling their concept in the Next Thing.
Thanks for posting those,I am in awe.

This is what Wiki has to say about the university in Orlais:

[i]'Val Royeaux is home to the University of Orlais, a major center of learning that attracts young nobles from all over Thedas with the best education money can buy. It is a relatively modern institution whose liberal-minded professors have already clashed with religious conservatives over the content of their classes'

This has to be a grand building and quite big Image IPB.
