Sorry for your concussion though that must have hurt like hell when you hit yourself  Posted Image Posted Image.

Luckily, you appear to have conquered that list unharmed     <_<

In the process of empathizing with you for the concussion, I  was suddenly reminded of how my brother hit himself in the face with a chest expander that suddenly decided to go rogue. I`d wager the flail was even worse.

However,if the PC managed to master the flail without executing him/herself in the process, this weapon, handled proficiently,is something I would try in the game. The animations for that, however, might be a tad difficult to pull off.

Been wracking my brain for games with actual animated chain weapons and outside of beatemup types not coming up with any. Thing with a weapon like that as well, if it hits flesh and bone it makes a nice cruncy sound, which stops the momentum, if it hits a solid surface.... it's just as likely to bounce back and hit you in the face. Think that is the reason for the spikes on the western varieties so they don't bounce.

If you want to make your own nunchucks: Take 2 kitchen rolls , tie them together and weight them with blu tac or something. Much safer than using the real thing.Posted Image

Kitchen roll nunchucks,LOL.    =]

I have to say,I am not that eager. After watching my brother punching himself,I decided to secretly try said chest expander....Needless to say, I moved onto mountain biking instead.Much safer.

And the kitchen rolls are reserved for the cat.He would kill me in my sleep if he did not get them to play with.

And the use of that kind of weapons was often in combination with a net. But still; it would be very 'kewl' to see that kind of weapon appear, even if it was in some kind of 'one on one gladiator style battle' like the dwarves have in Orzammar.

Oh,you mean the Retiarii ? They were the gladiators who fought with a net,a trident and a dagger.
That would be sweeeeet .      :o
The moment when "NPCs being caught up in your net" gains a whole new meaning........

After the wonderfull pictures of elven armor/weapons and every day items here are a few
that can be in use by the dwarves:

Cannot remember seeing one of those yet but seems a great dwarven weapon to me

Got just as much chance hitting yourself with that thing.

That's probably a modern prop, a true 'strijdvlegel' is, I think, supposed to have a staff that's longer than the ball and chain (and three balls? Well, I'm no expert on high/late medieval weapons). That's to keep the balls and chains out of the wielder's face and hands, by the way.

A lot of them don't seem to have a ball though (though these are the ones popular with people buying pseudo-medieval replica crap).

They looked more like this
Posted Image

An agricultural tool ('dorsvlegel' or flail). With a long staff and a spiky endpiece

Posted Image

it looks quite nice 'n businesslike. Less flashy than the spiky ball, but plenty of hurt. :pinched:

The flail is often confused with the 'goedendag' ('good day' in Dutch).
Apparently it took some research and debate before the issue was settled. Perhaps some of the adherents of the wrong theory were a bit too forceful...

Posted Image

(translated from Dutch):'Does anyone still doubt the historical accuracy of my reconstruction of the goedendag?'

Here's the real thing:

Posted Image

(goedendag spike, Gent)

Put it on top of a sturdy wooden staff and go out and play,  bash and stab cheerfully away.

Thus concludes today's history lesson B).

Anyway, off topic. Perhaps somebody should start a 'please bioware, give us weapon...' thread?

The underground world of Thedas is mostly shaped by the Dwarves.

They build enormous thaigs and roads that connect them over the centuries but with the appearence
of the darkspawn and their ever lasting war against them most thaigs are lost to the darkspawn.

The only known thaigs that are still inhabited are Orzammar, Kal Sharok and maybe Kal'Hirol.

These are pictures of the thaigs and roads we could visit in other DA installments:

Posted Image
Cadesh Thaig (lost thaig/uninhabited)

Posted Image Primeval Thaig (origin not clear yet)

Posted Image
Ortan thaig with dominant presence of paragon worship (lost thaig)

Posted Image
Kal'hirol thaig

This thaig is a center of learning for the smith caste. As far as we know this thaig has been reclaimed
by the dwarves by house Helmi from the darkspawn and probably inhabited by the dwarves once again.

Interesting fact is that the storing refined lyrium process was discovered there and the improvements
to golem resilience and power. These facts could give an interesting twist to the Thedas story if
implemented.
Posted Image

There are small differences in the way the paragons are depicted in appareance throughout the deep roads

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

And then there is the lost thaig/Primeval thaig which has no paragons at all and has a complete different look
then all the other thaigs:
Posted Image

Red lyrium in abundance...........................

But there are still thaigs that we know of that haven't been visited yet (like Kal Sharok) or ones that are not discovered yet. The network of roads and city's of the dwarves will probably be as big as the Thedas continent.

Another odd thing that is shown but not adressed to, the presence of elven statues in the deep roads:

The Byzantine images are just amazing! The vivid colors and bold architecture would be stunning as a dwarven thaig! I really like the floral and leaf designs on the pillars and vessels...elegant and graceful but very strong as well, and so lifelike :) The weapons are perfect as well.

These would be incredible locations in the Fade.  Dangerous but also attractive.  Sinister but more.  The last one reminds me a bit of the Blackreach in Skyrim.  Stunning finds!

Thank you for the history lesson ,`twas most amusing and informative.Seriously.

Derailing the topic with weapons and my usual irrelevant silliness is my fault - I misrepresented the thread title in my elven post, meaning "What art style are you hoping for",or something along those lines - sjpelkessjpeler and BobSmith101 just took it from there. My apologies. And thank you for steering us back on topic - you did what I should have done myself.        :innocent:

So,thank you,and I mean it    :)

@sjpelkessjpeler : Those are just stunning!      <3   I am especially fond of the first one....and the second image  reminds me of what the Black City must look like.  Wonderful additions, thank you!

@WardenWade :  I am glad you liked the Byzantine examples. Only the first one was for the dwarves, though - the rest I thought looked kind of elven, but the text is easy to overlook in between the images      <_<

I see I that did get them mixed up...I'm sorry for the confusion with the images! You had indeed mentioned that, and I completely agree that the leaf motif works very well for the elves :) The flowers and even viney look to the pillars are perfect. And very delicate, and elegant. But strong. I think that's exactly the sort of architecture the elven culture would tend to create in stonework. Excellent finds, and I'm sorry again for the confusion! :)

The presence of elven statues in the deep roads makes a deeper connection between dwarves and elves
in the early days very plausible. The elves might even had some influence in the dwarven architecture.

There have been several posts allready about Kal Sharok and the style posted was more round and
elven like. Dug some more into that and here are some additions:

Posted Image round and 'brickish' combined..

Posted Image dwarven handy work with elven looking wallpainting..

Posted Image
If no wood is available you make a door like that Posted Image

Posted Image underground storage room..

http://t1.gstatic.co...NVxHH different height levels would look great Posted Image

To be honest, the more I look at it, the more I think the underground cities of Cappadocia might in some ways have been a better 'look' for DA2's 'primeval thaig'. More simple, sparsely or even completely undecorated architecture. Not too far from the surface...the place from where a people started to dig deeper, and deeper, and changing into the 'classical' dwarves we see in Orzammar. A place abandoned to ghosts and venturesome surface creatures.

In addition, a few additions of 'robust'  underground architecture of my own:

The hypogeum (underground cemetery) of Hal Saflieni, Malta. 4th to 3rd millennium BC.

Dicsworld rocks!

Which reminds me whether dwarven ingenuity would be capable of producing something akin to the constantly shifting planes seen in one of my favourite games of all time,Anachronox.

Anachronox is an alien planet that is like a round Rubik`s cube, with constantly shifting planes.
In a quite vertigo inducing manner, catwalks would become footpaths and vice versa,as seen in this video.

Anachronox     -  at 01:45 and 05:40.

I thought this would naturally fit into an ancient dwarven ruin - or could be a product of dwarven-elven collaboration,if the idea sjpelkessjpeler brought up is plausible.    ;)

It's got the same sort of open enviroment thing going on. Maps are huge. One odd thing is you can create your own character, but it really takes no part in the story (even though you can play it, it just sort of stands around like the Warden in cutscenes). There is a guild/building part of the game which you can now play solo (used to be MP only , this is where your character comes in).
If you buy White Knight Chronciles 2 you get a remastered version of part 1 for free so it's 2 games in one really, or one really long game, depending on how you look at it.

And you can do this  Posted Image

(we now return you to your regular topic).

Yay    :o    I remember Tom Hall saying on his blog quite a while back that he also wished he could do the sequel,as the game ended in a massive cliffhanger, but alas....
Still, I`m with you on this : I keep on hoping      :innocent:

Back on topic : the fantasy genre has a lot more leeway when it comes to defying physics,so I would be thrilled to see something really fantastic in the Dragon Age universe at some point.

Thank you! :) Your images and explanations were great, I just got myself mixed up :)

@ sjpelkessjpeler

Those forest and nighttime images are so beautiful. I'd happily live in any of them :) And regarding the images you posted along with the suggestion of an elven and dwarven connection, I completely agree that they work for both cultures. These underground cities have both a strong, clean look and also an airy elegance that takes from what we see or know of both cultures. The stone doors look so perfectly dwarven, but the pillars are slender and detailed. I'd like to think there was a cultural mixing or sharing, as you suggest. I think it's a great idea, and one that is borne out in the games with statues, codex entries and so on...

If some elves actually decided to go live 'underground' think this would be in a thaig that isn't to far from the surface as they are nature loving beings..............
As we notice in het game elves are very flexible regarding environments but they still need some touch to nature. Will start digging some more into it when I return from work :).
