This is something I found regarding dwarven/elven combination in terms of architecture:

It's massive but also elegant and refined...........

Artwork that could be implemented because of their rounder more elegant forms Posted Image.

If some elves actually decided to go live 'underground' think this would be in a thaig that isn't to far from the surface as they are nature loving beings..............
As we notice in het game elves are very flexible regarding environments but they still need some touch to nature. Will start digging some more into it when I return from work :).

That's a great idea!  And I completely agree.  It seems that even in the cities/alienages, with the vhenadahl, elves crave some natural connection whatever their situation.  As far as it goes, I think the shoeless nature of Dalish elves in DA2 perhpas underscores this desire to be close to nature whether in a physical or spiritual way.  And if they aren't, as you mention, elves will, likely, naturally do what they can to be as close as possible to the surface, trees and sun.

Also, as you mention the adaptability of the elves, looking at Cadash thaig and the elven statues we see deep within some of the portions of the Deep Roads or ruins, it seems as though they were content and must indeed have been able to forge a good life even underground in general, though farther from the surface than they had ever been.

Though they're written by different individuals, the letters comprising the

<SPOILERS>

"Letters From the Past' codex entry in Witch Hunt note that carvings there depict elves and dwarves
willingly forming an alliance.  Furthermore, the codex entries indicate that elven artifacts found there long ago were left by way of trade.  The entries are cynical on many points but it seems possible (to me, likely) that this trade was between elves and dwarves rather than dwarves and later smugglers.  This indicates to me that the elves made the best life they could there, adapted, and interacted positively with their new neighbors.

Furthermore, as Cadash thaig is indeed close to the surface, making this possible, it seems to me that the elves there made it "home" by encouraging--or allowing--plant life to grow., thus establishing a new connection to nature.  It sounded to me like a way of showing they intended to stay, and that they liked where they were and valued the refuge the dwarves provided, however long it lasted.  sjpelkessjpeler, you suggested the elves, being adaptable, seemed like they might have actually come to like living underground (particularly if able to make it their own place) and I completely agree.  Simply coming to the dwarves for shelter shows both a willingness to trust and an appreciation for the relative safety the thaigs can often provide.  Elves are surface creatures but I believe the thaig provided an alternative that was hardly unattractive, especially under the circumstances of the Arlathan refugees.

These are wonderful!  The first image has such strong, yet elegant, architecture...you're absolutely right about that!  And the second is much less severe than normal dwarven architecture may be.  As you mentioned, it's more rounded...organic, even.  It would work very well for a hybrid style!

The Cadash thaig is situated pretty high underneath the surface we both agree on that. This allows sunlight to come in.
There also have to be entrances into the thaig and I imagine that the thaig lies under a forest area.

We have become so spoiled with life-like looking scenery.   It was not really so long ago, when game developers did not have great graphics to fall back on, and were forced to write a great story, with solid combat mechanics to gain players.

Harken back to the years, when the story was most important, and the game gave you a simple outline of what you were seeing, allowing your imagination to fill in the void.

Wizardry 2 circa 1982 (could not find a screen shot for first Wizardry)

One of the first "color" crpgs.  (Did not play this one myself)

Ultima IV Quest of the Avatar circa 1985

played this first on a pirated disk on college lab computers. Later, when I owned my own computer, I bought my own legal copy.

The Bard's Tale circa 1985

Told a great story, and was highly lauded at the time, yet today, I doubt few would play it.
"With only a map of the town of Skara Brae included on the box, it was usually necessary for players to use pencil and graph paper to make their own maps as they played through the game. In the first two games, each dungeon level was set on a fixed 22 by 22 grid.

The game that really got me hooked on crpgs.  I played each of the Gold Box games countless times.

Back then, the "eye candy" the games provided, was usually not as good as a Dungeon Master could provide with miniatures on a pnp game.  Yet these games were very popular, because of the story, and the well designed combat systems that made challenging, yet balance combats, that made a player feel like they achieved something when they prevailed.  Because of the horrendous loading times, people tried real hard not to die, and resort to the load previous save option.  Even the process of saving the game took a long time, and so people played more carefully.

Just my subtle little way to say, if they make DA3 a great game, regardless of the graphics, there are going to be a lot of people that will be happy.  But if all they can do is offer us cinematic scenery as the hook to get us to play, I think we would be better served sitting down and watching the LoTR trilogy for the -nth time.

Great post,Dakota, and thanks for adding your very valuable 2 cents.     :)

I suppose what we are trying to do in this thread - besides filling it with eye-candy till we die of elevated blood sugar levels-is try and show one another how we imagined the places we have not yet had the opportunity to see in DA.

I agree that atmosphere and immersion are the most important aspects, which does not have to mean visuals above everything else.
Heck, most of my favourite games,if you look at them now, are ugly as hell, yet when I get around to play them again, I am totally drawn in,each and every time - they are like a good book   <_<
If I want jaw-dropping visuals,I go and watch a movie that does it well.

But these are completely different forms of media, and completely different methods of storytelling.
With technology advancing at FTL speed, game developers are not only given more opportunities to pamper us with breathtaking visuals, but they also face new challenges with regards to writing, storytelling and overall game design.

As the medium is changing,so will their methods of engaging the player. As to how,and to what extent, that is different for each developer.
I think these changes do not necessarily have to be detrimental to storytelling, because the environment itself can tell part of the story for you.Sound design, likewise. The writing will naturally have to try and "morph" accordingly,if profound changes are implemented in the storytelling department.
I can`t speak from experience as I am no writer, nor do I aspire to be one,as I have no talent, but I would imagine it is no easy task to figure out how,and to what extent should they accomodate the new storytelling tools.
This is,I`d wager, where all those fiery debates regarding the "unwelcome changes",or perceived problems originate
(i.e. voiced protagonist,cinematics,changes in combat design,whathaveyou).

New tech solutions not only bring with them new, great opportunities, but great challenges as well.

"That`s what I heard on the road anyhow, take it for what it is."

I want to go to Starkhaven and see my best friend/avowed enemy/complete stranger (depending on how/if you played the ending of events for "The Exiled Prince" DLC) ruling the most beautiful city-state in the Free Marches, gosh darnit!

Didn't Sebastian describe Starkhaven to Hawke at one point? I'm having a hard time remembering the description, except that the whole place was prettier and less impoverished.

Looking forward to it!  And thank you!  I think the races are linked in many ways...certainly they all share an ultimate fate, given the tumultuous events looming for DA3.  And it's clear in the past their ties were strong as well...many possibilities!

Starkhaven, the largest city in the Free Marches, sits on the bank of the great Minanter River. I remember my visit to the city quite clearly. I was taken up the river by barge—a cumbersome vessel that moved at a stately pace—and disembarked by the city's central square, an impressive space with marble fountains and surrounded by kingly estates.
Starkhaven's wealth was truly a sight to behold. A path paved in granite led up to the grandest building I've ever seen. My guide indicated that this was the residence of Starkhaven's ruler, Prince Vael.

Copied from the codex of Brother Genitivi

This is how these Kingly buildings could look like:

@sjpelkessjpeler : Boterkuupke strikes again! That is...that is....*scrounges for words*...lovely,to say the least.

It also made me a tiny bit homesick,as the szekely-inspired architecture is something we have in abundance in Hungary.
Buildings such as those in your post are prevalent in Transylvania, that was once part of Hungary  (present day Romania),but the legacy lives on in the Budapest district my family lives in.These buildings (i.e. the first 3 pics)
are everywhere there!
And I must say, they are an excellent choice for Starkhaven - how is it that it never occurred to me,lol.

Thanks for the great post,it was worth the wait!     <3
How would you imagine the wilderness around the city?

I will also add in some more oculus-indulging sweets (aka eye candy),as promised later, but I am a very.very sad person today - one of my favourite authors,Ray Bradbury died yesterday. Will have to add something really stellar Ray would like.

When I was discussing the architecture with Das Tentakel for Starkhaven we agreed that a lot
of styles were possible for it.

When I went for Neo Romanian style I realized that that was something that you might like in sense of deja vu.
So consider the post some extra eye-candy in honor of your heritage Posted Image.

FF's are all about the story. Recent ones have been about the weird kind of story... but still.

My favourite classic one is FFIX it's a dark fairytale. FFX is still my overall favourite though, could be because it was the first new type JRPG I played.

We are in agreement,sir.

And now,for something completely different....iiiiiiit`s.....an illustration by Ray Bradbury for his own book.
If I wanted to steer this ship back on its intended course (which I hijacked in the first place),I would say this tree could be anywhere in Thedas.
I just wanted to post something for Ray. It is his painting titled "Halloween Tree".
