Very nice pictures of the Beauvais and Albi cathedrals!
Regarding the pictures of the Towers, though: They aren’t bad, but personally I feel they illustrate what is usually wrong with many fantasy illustrations and fantasy videogames as well:
They basically all look the same.
Of course, they are different, but they tend to share similar ‘gleaming light’, ‘spiky’, ’Gothic’ and rather run of the mill (badly executed) ‘epic location’ characteristics.
They lack real ‘character’ I think.
Consider the Towers in Jackson’s LotR trilogy. Orthanc/Isengard, the Barad-Dur, the Tower of Ecthelion and Minas Morgul all look very distinctive.
For instance, Orthanc is somber, elegant and dominates a flat stretch of land. Barad-Dur is completely over the top, but detailed, spiky, grimy, more than a little insane, semi-mechanical and topped by a Burning Eye.
@ Begemotka:
As for the SF spire, if any concept artist came up with it for the White Spire, I’d immediately fire the artist but write a recommendation letter for the guys making Halo IV. It’s quintessentially SF, and would stand out like an SS Standartenführer at a Renaissance Faire.
Cool if sinister uniform, wrong (very wrong!) associations and totally out of place
