@LolaLei:

Very nice pictures of the Beauvais and Albi cathedrals!

Regarding the pictures of the Towers, though: They aren’t bad, but personally I feel they illustrate what is usually wrong with many fantasy illustrations and fantasy videogames as well:

They basically all look the same.

Of course, they are different, but they tend to share similar ‘gleaming light’, ‘spiky’, ’Gothic’ and rather run of the mill (badly executed) ‘epic location’ characteristics.
They lack real ‘character’ I think.

Consider the Towers in Jackson’s LotR trilogy. Orthanc/Isengard, the Barad-Dur, the Tower of Ecthelion and Minas Morgul all look very distinctive.
For instance, Orthanc is somber, elegant and dominates a flat stretch of land. Barad-Dur is completely over the top, but detailed, spiky, grimy, more than a little insane, semi-mechanical and topped by a Burning Eye.

@ Begemotka:
As for the SF spire, if any concept artist came up with it for the White Spire, I’d immediately fire the artist but write a recommendation letter for the guys making Halo IV. It’s quintessentially SF, and would stand out like an SS Standartenführer at a Renaissance Faire.

Cool if sinister uniform, wrong (very wrong!) associations and totally out of place  :(

But Professor Utonium, that is why I had the following words accompany the image: "tweaked version".     :P
Because, you see, this concept at least was a bit different from the standard fantasy tower fare.
Good points, though. Sad I will never see Halo IV. I stopped at no.2.      :innocent: (see what I did there...Halo....har har)
For what it is worth, you are my most appreciated critic.

Edit : A song to illustrate, just for fun : Hugh Laurie - Mystery            :kissing:

Yours faithfully,Blossom

I really want to see a return of the Deep Roads. The feeling of exploring this labyrinthine network of tunnels and lost Thaigs was one of the best moments of Origins for me. Whilst I can understand that they might want to make any Deep Roads section a bit shorter, I'd rather not have them at all than have the whizzstop tour we are given in DA2.

The picture is Überlol,btw

Actually...looking at it now,it has just occurred to me that perhaps this is how Urthemiel came into being....you know..like so :

1 Blue Ancient Dragon + 1 Red Ancient Dragon =  1 Purple Ancient Dragon

@sjpelkessjpeler :   <3   Awesome! Especially the last one...looks like something from a Myst game.

Not really an enviroment so much as a demonstration of scale in combat and everything being a part of the world.

And just for fun heres Ymir from Tides of Destiny (because there are not enough sea based games)

You made me look into Dragon's Dogma some more due to your pictures....
This is what I found that piqued my interest in combo environment and battling beasts:

How about an underwater city that only rises during the height of a full moon? And sinks along with its treasures and the corpses of would-be adventurers by dawn. Maybe a secret village inside a "bottomless adventurer's sack"? How about a secret pastel colored pony island on a cloud? Or an Inn inside a giant rotting whale's ribcage? How about a vast beach with a bloodred ocean and the giant severed head of a god off its shore?

Be careful what you wish for. What you see in the concept art may not be like what you get in-game.

Remember the Elves! Oh, remember the Elves...

(the horror, oh, the horror....:crying:)

Dragon's Dogma, sigh. It appears to have some cool stuff in it, but every, and I really mean every, review I've read came with a WARNING! WARNING! sign.
Ah, well. There's always the bargain bin. Hopefully the game will be succesful enough, and the criticisms clear and overwhelming enough, to ensure a (vastly superior) sequel.

*snip*

I would rather not remember the elves.
I have seen folks bringing up TW2 elves as exemplary. I dunno...to me,they just looked like attractive humans with funny ears, that is all. Nothing exceptional in that regard, standard LOTR (movie) fare. I actually appreciate DA2`s intended departure from the standard elf design, but the execution left a lot of room for improvement.
They looked like    :alien: ,which was quite an alienating experience. (Lame pun strike 1 - I just had to.)

And we are back to the engine stuff,I guess,so...I will leave it at that. I can only hope that whatever they come up with for The Next Thing ™  will have the desired effect....

Well it's part farm, part transport and part thing that beats up anything you might come across while traveling the oceans.

Yep those are from Dragons Dogma. It's one of those games that you just enjoy walking around looking at things.

Hmmm....DDogma might not be all around perfection, but it is sure worth a try. As a hiking simulator for rainy days,if nothing else.

Runefactory is part farming game , part crafting, part fishing, dating sim, exploration and dungeon exploring. There is even a plot in their somewhere that involves a spoiler so I won't go into it.

You can play as a boy or girl, but you have to finish the game as the boy first (again because of the plot).

Aside from the awesome enemy battles, I really couldn't gel with Dragons Dogma... I guess foolishly, part of me hoped we'd be able to interact with our "pawns" in a similar way to Dragon Age.
