Having played the whole saga on Xbox and wanting to forget the latest installment, I've decided to go back to ME1, but would instead like to get it for PC.
Not trying to start a PC / Xbox debate here, I just want some honest advice on it. After reading Amazon reviews, it looks like that malware that it installs, at least by the 2008 date of the reviews is a little sketchy.
ME1 PC...Should I?

Well, in my experience (and a bunch of others) it can be very buggy and have poor performance. It seems kind of random as to whether you're going to luck out and have a smooth gameplay experience or not. My game crashes fairly often, will lock up shortly after I alt+tab out and then back in, has a bunch of audio issues (loud "pops" where gameplay sounds play at maximum volume for a split second), missing/silent speech during dialogue scenes, performance stuck around the 30fps range, regardless of settings (I can bring up the menu and watch my framerate climb to the default cap of 62, close the menu and play for about 5 seconds until the framerate falls back to the 30's again...). There's also annoying positive as well as negative mouse acceleration depending on how fast you move your mouse.
It's definitely not a flawless experience for me. But I do still enjoy the game
Although, having said all that you can probably pick it up for $5 if you look around. Amazon recently had them on sale so I doubt they'd show up cheaper anytime soon. If you're a steam user, you can expect to see ME1 as well as ME2 for $5 each around the end of June, when they'll likely have their summer sale.

Sound quality wise, the pc version is inferior. Even with a high-end soundcard and doing all the modifications in the .ini file I still have moments where the sound cuts off or pops. It does not do it to any of the other two Mass Effect games, only the first one. However, the loading times are much better in the PC version and so is the interface. Obviously graphically the game looks sharper as well . I guess you have to pick what you like the most. If you like the audio more than the graphics and loading times then I would stick with the 360 copy.

Thanks for the writeups.
I may just stick with the 360 version, I guess in terms of the PC version I was buying too much into their whole "roleplaying perfected" marketing line from back then.
I feel like the small interface and gameplay enhancements the PC version implements doesn't necessarily warrant buying a whole other copy.

I didn't think the sound quality was worse. The game looks quite a bit sharper with a good video card and pretty much avoids the texture pop. I found the controls to be quite a bit better on PC.
