I know a lot of people here are PC-gamers, but I'm obviously not the only console gamer around :)

I've always been a console gamer (I did play BG, BG2, IWD & IWD2 for PC, but that's about it) and an RPgamer ever since the days of Zelda, Phantasy Star, Y'S the vanished omens and Mirace Warriors.

As a console RPgamer, JRPG's has always been the more common (and until a few years back, usually the better) games around.

Now 40-something hours in to this game (with ~40%) with one character and 10 hours with a second Im starting to wonder if this might be the best console RPG out.
I can definitely understand that I'm missing out on a lot of functions by not playing the PC version, especially when it comes to strategy, but this far I have no problem with that at all. I think it plays a lot like KOTOR, which still is one of my fav RPG's. Im playing on hard and think there's still a lot of room for strategy even on the console (Xbox 360 for me) version.

I can get in to an encounter that kills me in seconds just to reload, use a different strategy, use traps, poisons, retreat to bottlenecks etc and come out as a victor, which gives me more fun factor and sense of accomplichement than in most previous RPG's I've played.

I can't really say if I consider it the best console RPG yet, I have to finish it first, but this far I'd say "yes".
Graphically, Fallout3 and Mass Effect are better, and a lot of the JRPG's Ive played has a lot more unique story (the Persona games, Xenogears). However, as far as the game world and the immersion, it's only Mass Effect that have gotten me as deep in the character and the game lore ever.

Any other console gamer feeling this way or am I a victim of mid-game-hype?

If I'd have to choose the 10 best console RPG's (DA:O not included) I would list the following (no particular order)

Phantasy Star IV
Chrono Trigger
Xenogears
FF VII
FF XII
Persona 4
Fallout 3
Mass Effect
KOTOR
Jade Empire

You forgot Lufia 2. Heathen. As for this being the best console RPG out, I can't say-- I've never played it on a console. I can, however, say it's my favorite RPG of all time: and that includes pretty much everything on the SNES, PSX, PS2, and PC.

Lufia 2 comes in at a close second, though, followed closely by FFVI. Six.

I say this simply because most RPGs out there are placed a sanitized high-fantasy bubble: they self-censor. As a general rule, they avoid "dangerous" themes, cutscenes, and violence. I'm not saying I want an orgy on all of the above, but I'm ecstatic to finally see someone step up to make an RPG that doesn't cut chunks out of the story just to make non-players happy.

Other games have done bits of this before (Mass Effect, Persona, Shadow Hearts) but this is the first major release I've seen in a fantasy setting that does all of the above so well.

with the lack of real RPG on the console market i would say it is. most games labeled RPG on consoles are simply adventure games with numbers. Just because your character levelsup doesn't auto make it a RPG.

Considering most console RPG's are horrible, yes it is the best RPG ever on Console. I have YET to play a good RPG on console, ( I didn't buy it for my 360, I will ALWAYS go for PC when available).

Oblivion & Morrowind are AWESOME games, not because of the stock content, but because of the mods.

If you mean to say WESTERN  RPG then i can see it sure. However played the game on PS3 and i felt it was just plain functional. Nothing more and nothing less. Mass effect and KOTOR  were easily much better as western RPGs come by for a console.

Where's that pic of Sten saying 'NO'

Mass Effect, Oblivion, Morrowind were all superior, and they're only recent ones. A lot of really good older ones as well, like the FFX series and Chrono trigger as listed.

If people are still playing this 10 years from now, then maybe we'll talk.

However good the game is i just dont see it mentioned 10 years from now like other games surely will. Some old games that have been questioned at their time are now all time classics and only few people could see it happen. Case of point PS1 Vagrand Story. This game was literally hated when it came out. It was a commercial catastrophe. NON of my friends, bar one, liked the game. Same with the people that came into my store to buy a new game, nobody ever asked for it. I was for the first time certain that the game was pants but i liked it only. How wrong i was even for a moment back then to think as such. The game is a love it or hate it masterpiece and LOTS of games of today have copied several of its mechanics and gameplay style (and not only). The thinking mans dungeon crawler that happens to love a greatly told story from his games.

For DAO however i just dont see it being the discusion for years to comet It will be forgoten quickly and thats because its a great fast food game but still fast food. It really cant compete with the gourmet and house made food that people will long talk about even after years.

I can vouch for Oblivion as being a great RPG, definitly a contender for best RPG of all time, though personally I find too much openness to be anti-climatic. My memories of Oblivion are less about story and more about wondering around, exploring and getting into mischief to see how the game world reacts. It was fun, but when speaking about RPG's which to me means "My Characters Story", no game has felt as personal as Dragons Age. The game gives me the Pencil and Paper RPG feeling which I think is why I would choose it above Oblivion.

While my heart will always belong to KoTOR, as far as console RPGs DA:O definitely ranks up there. Immersive storyline, complex plots, well built characters, and multiple player options for character development, verra verra nice. With the long range DLC plans...*drool*

Ouch. You caught me with both of my dark secrets, FF VI and Lufia 2. Haven't played any of them, though it pains me to admitt it. Played most of the JRPG's of that era, Tales of Phantasia, Secret of Mana etc and I even bought FF Anthology for PSX, but I just havent gotten around to play it...

True, a lot of JRPG's tend to be a little too PG... And the fact that DA:O is not about a spikey haired 17 year old orphant about to emabark on a journey and awaken his hidden power is reason enough I guess :)

I liked VII a lot better than VI, but maybe that's just me. Cloud in the bar/sauna thing...TOO freakin' hilarious.

Dragon Age is one of the best recent RPGs, console or otherwise. It's not THE best, but it is no slouch.

I'm not so sure I agree though. Of course it depends on how to define an RPG.
A couple of features from DA:O:
1. Possibility to create your own character
2. Story driven
3. Optional sidequests
4. Optional companions
5. Conversations with different answers
6. Choices
7. Leveling
7. Strategy

A lot of JRPG's (and other games like Jade Empire, KOTOR 1 & 2, Mass Effect) has most of those. Persona 4 for instance has all of them except 1 (I dont remember if there were any optional companions though, so maybe 4 as well).

But I agree that there's a lot of games labeled as RPG's that isn't close to being RPG's (like Fable 1&2)

As per consoles, I still think the FFs are king. The only reason I own a console is for FF.

The best console RPG ever is still OoT for me, yes it does not have a level up system but it is still a RPG in it's all rights. DAO is a very well-done game, but KOTOR and ME are better in my mind.

Also we got to remember that having level-up does not make a game an RPG. I don't consider Borderlands, Fallout 3 or Oblivion a RPG because of it's lack of story, no character dev and no connection with your charcter. A true RPG needs those to truly be an RPG in my book.

I guess that's a case pf personal preference. To me there's a LOT of great RPG's on console, apart from the 10 I listed there's the Tales series, the Star Ocean series, Shadow Hearts series etc etc. But then again, if you don't like JRPG's then there's still Jade Empire, KOTOR 1&2 and Mass Effect (even though they all came out on PC I think all of them were console first and then was ported).

As far as PC RPG's, I don't have enough experience to make a good comment, but below is my impressions.

I really enjoyed BG 1 & 2, but I think IWD 1&2 were inferior to a lot of the console RPG's.

And I never liked Gothic, Ultima etc and I think Morrowind was pretty ok, but not much more. I enjoyed the open world, but the gameplay was flawed IMO. I really don't like first person melee, that's partly why I like Fallout3, but not Oblivion and Morrowind, since Fallout3 is mostly a FPS, combat wise.

My cpu was far too underpowered to play NWN when it came out. I tried to play it 2-3 of years back, but old 3D graphics grow really old quickly. Also 3D ages with less dignity than 2D.
I borrowed a friends laptop in order to play NWN2, but I think it was pretty generic and forgettable.

Very good point, that'll be interesting to see, even though I don't agree with Oblivion and Morrowind being better than DA:O. Mass Effect is probably one of the best RPG's IMO and I think ME2 can become the GOTY 2010 (I sure hope it lives up to it).

But it's definitely an interesting thought, will DA:O be remembered like Chrono Trigger, FFVI, FFVII and such in 10 years?

Frankly, I personally think Mass Effect was a better RPG. DA:O improved on it but I think Mass Effect revolutionized RPGs and raised the bar higher than Final Fantasy for RPGs in my opinion.

FOr the most part I don't like JRPGs. The one thing I hate most in the world is grinding. I cannot tell you how much I absolutely despise grinding. It is one of the reasons why I hate MMOs. If you do not grind in JRPGs and MMOs you are pretty much lacking ability to go further in the game. That is why no JRPG, particularly any FF game, will ever be in my top spot in console CRPGs.

My top five favorite CRPGs (in no particular order) on the console are:

Dragon Age

Fallout 3

Mass Effect

Oblivion

Jade Empire

Final Fantasy never really revolutionized anything other than what would naturally upgrade as time flew by and by that i mean visuals, presentation, writing, coherence and whatnot. The J-RPGs that did revolutionize the genre were not massive commercial successes. So far these franchises that did revolutionize remain the best at what they do. A final fantasy game you can bet that it will have insane production values, visuals that beautiful beyond anything on the market at any moment (its why FF12 looks so great even 2 years later and on PS2 to boot), strong soundtrack, gameplay with no hassle, bug free and meticulously tested, you just never feel that the game was meant to be something greater. Its all there for you to see and play.
