What? You think that KotOR 1 is better than Oblivion? Or Fable is better than Jade Empire? Please. I do not like Star Wars so I don't particularly like the KotORs. And both Fable 1 and 2 were crap. So, list some better XBox/XBox 360 CRPGs that are better. And don't bother listing any JRPGs or MMos. As I said earlier I hate level griniding.

Final Fantasy 3 was the best console RPG ever. :P

(tied with Chrono Trigger)

Though to be fair, FF2 gets HUGE honorable mention because that was one of the ONLY games where I actually felt for several of the characters. Poor Palom & Porom! :(

Final Fantasy never really revolutionized anything other than what would naturally upgrade as time flew by and by that i mean visuals, presentation, writing, coherence and whatnot. The J-RPGs that did revolutionize the genre were not massive commercial successes. So far these franchises that did revolutionize remain the best at what they do. A final fantasy game you can bet that it will have insane production values, visuals that beautiful beyond anything on the market at any moment (its why FF12 looks so great even 2 years later and on PS2 to boot), strong soundtrack, gameplay with no hassle, bug free and meticulously tested, you just never feel that the game was meant to be something greater. Its all there for you to see and play.

THe problem with FF games is that they follow the whole JRPG formula that I hate.  I hate level grinding but if you want to get to any of the "cool" aspects of the game you have to level grind.  If you actually want a chance to beat the game you need to level grind.  Its a load of crap.

Sorry, never could get into any of the Elder Scrolls games. Found them indescribably boring, for some reason.

I just like to sneak around and stab people. It was a good stress reliever.

Yeah the grind is the downside of most JRPG's though there's some JRPG's where the grind is almost non existing (if you don't wish to do all hidden bosses etc). 2 examples are FF XII and Persona 4. I cant remember grinding much in Chronocross either. EDIT: neither in Chrono Trigger.

But yeah, the grind can be a b**tch... And sometimes it feels like the grind is there only to ad hours to the gameplay.

I gotta say that the sense of accomplishment from perfecting strategies in order to win fights you thought was impossible is one of the things that (right at this moment) makes me feel like DA:O is the winner.

In most other games, if you get your ass kicked severely you'll need to do a little grinding to get some better gear and abilities, but in DA:O I've had several encounters that seemed impossible that was almost easy when done in a different way.

Both Fable 1&2 were (IMO) meh-ok adventure action games, but horrible RPG's. What's an RPG without conversations? Fable 2 had me wishing I was playing a different game in the same game world, because I liked the whole atmosphere, but the gameplay was too repetitive, the story non exisiting and with character interaction limited to farting I kind of feel like they need to rethink the whole Fable concept totally.

I liked both KOTOR and Jade Empire a lot more than Oblivion, mostly because of the first person melee combat a bit dull story and the repetition (Oblivion gates...)

Storywise I liked Morrowind a lot better.

We are talking about console CRPGs. Ultima 7 was only a PC game. Now if we are talking PC games then my list just got larger.

Anyone ever play Panzer Dragoon Saga? It was AMAZING!

Ignoring that though. Plotwise the final fantasies win in my mind, character development and choices wise this wins.

What character development? If you played one taciturn and grumpy spikey hair kid with a sword you have basically played them all. This newest one seems to have all the teen angst of Dawson's Creek spatted out with sappy sad love musak.

To be honest, I've never truely understood what the attraction was about the Fable games. I thought they were absurd - like some saturday morning cartoon. I may be somewhat biased given that I think Peter Molyneux is the single most overrated developer in the game business, but ultimately, I wouldn't even class Fable 1 and 2 as RPGs.

I never really got that much out of Jade Empire. I like Far eastern mythos, but I never thought it fit a game.

Morrowind had one of the best stories and worlds of all RPGs but had a horrible interface, with controls that felt floaty and spells that sounded like farts. I'd buy a novelisation of that game.

Ultimately, Dragon Age has taken my top spot for Fantasy 'traditional' RPGs. I think it's just a combo of characters, story, graphics, spells, and loot. It just fits together so amazingly well.

My faves:

#1 Dragon Age: Origins
#2 KOTOR
#3 Mass Effect
#4 Neverwinter Nights 2/Mask of the Betrayer
#5 Might and Magic: Dark Messiah

No i said dragon age had better character development.

FF7+ 8 +10 all have better plots.

Heck Blazblue has a better plot and that is a 2d fighter (its a really good plot)

I... don't know. Especially when it comes to RPG console games. There are several things Dragon Age did well, that other console RPGs failed at, but it is far, far from a perfect game. The only console RPG that I ever felt to be closest to perfection was Suikoden II, and its an entirely different kind of RPG than Dragon Age. It wouldn't be fair to compare the two. Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are very memoriable console RPG games as well.

In b4 Japanese game hate.

Ok I guess it gets a bit too subjective from here on out to bother arguing.

Anyway, my view is that this story arc:. Unite factions-> repel threat has been done.

On the other hand Sorceress trying to merge time by possesing past incarnations of herself is a bit more interesting.

I respect your opinion of course.

Oblivion was entertaining for a while, then became immensely boring, especially the gates themselves. Mass Effect I detested with every ounce of my being, never played any FF on the console, although I've played a few on the DS, and they were ok. Just got Tales of Vesperia (GameFly) for thew XBox, and it's ok so far. And Lost Odyesee (sp?) on XBox was ok, but DA:O wins for me, hands down as the best console RPG. Oh, and disliked Fable I, but enjoyed Fable II well enough...

For this type of genre specifically I'd say either DA:O or Fallout 3. However, I am very satisfied with Demon's Souls, I much prefer the action element of DS to the wierd wannabe strategy combat but also 3rd person action of DA:O. Also of note would be Dead Space, while a linear story it is very emersive and just outright awesome.

Panzer dragoon saga was an absolute gem. Too bad it was so hard to find and was over so quickly.

Notable mentions as well are of the Xeno-series (xenogears, xenosaga) with only part 2 being kind of weak. Xenogears and Xenosaga part 1, 3 were where its at. Non of those games required level grinding either and they are just grander than life in terms of their story. Fun and tactical turn-based combat is a plus.

Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 were awesome as well that present western RPGs (Valhala, Death maidens and whatnot) but with the excellence of a J-pan production in terms of gameplay. No need for level grind here either.
