I believe that the Grey Wardens as a whole won't get involved beyond observing and hiding their mages away, at least at the beginning. Some idividual wardens may desert like Bethany/Carver at the end of Act 3 but most will stay neutral.

However if the Mage-Templar war really is so dangerous there is a possibility of destruction of the Chantry (an organisation that existed for 1000 years and hold most nations of Thedas in its palms) and leaving nothing but burning ruins and bloody corpses (basically a mass destruction on a continental-scale), the Wardens wil have to take a stance. If they don't they will face mass desertions among younger Wardens and recruits and danger to existance of their order.

Most people who still have any connection to their family and friends won't simply stand by and see them killed in a massive ****storm rolling through the continent. If all possible forms of government are occupated with preventing civilized world from falling apart, there won't be any formal forms of enforcing things like the Rite of Conscription. There won't be many recruits either. If the Wardens stand aside and do nothing, there may be no world to be saved from the next two Blights after that.

There will be pushes for the Wardens to take sides (both from within and from outside). If the situation becomes serious I see them taking on a mediator role, as a third, neutral party. On the other hand if too many Wardens abondon their neutrality and take sides, there may be some attempts to limit their independance (since Anders was a Grey Warden). Or most fanatical templars may try to take Warden mages away (this happened in Awaking with Anders). The Wardens wil have to defend themselves against such actions.

Will there be a schism in this case? Remember that it took one charismatic leader for almost all Ferelen Wardens to rise against the king.

I'd say it depends on the Warden.

Pro mages no doubt. I would not be suprised if they created the entire mage/templar war from the shadows.

Always Pro-Mage. I refuse to associate any of my characters to Templars.

Grey Wardens "typically" don't involve themselves in what are largely political affairs (as will no-doubt be seen as regarding the Mage-Templar War) or wars that do not involve the Darkspawn threat. As long as either side (or assumingly the player character in DA3) does nothing to agitate or persuade the Wardens to step in for either side or as a third force in the war, the Wardens will remain content dealing with the greater threat of non-sapient Darkspawn.
