If you right-click on the ground, you'll bring up a context menu that allows you to give them orders. If you choose 'attack nearest', they should follow you and attack any hostile targest on sight. If you choose 'follow me' then they should follow you passively, but won't attack anything.

sometimes it's a bug and they won't follow you no matter what. try to disable and enable ai, afterwards give a command. in my case that often helped.

I saw this bug more and more often with the latest 3 or 4 patches - it seems to happen most often with Casavir in the party - I usually dump him asap and the problem seems less frequent - but you are stuck fighting all those orcs with retarded ai.

I tend to flick through them to give orders any way and this helps. I allso tend to keep "GUARD ME" set as my normal command and they will attack who ever attacks you.-Semper- wrote...

Allso some area's have more problems than others. My biggest peppee is when they get gamed in the door way, or your archer blocks your melee chars. This is why I tend to flick through my chars and micro manage them most combats.
Would highly advise getting some of the upgrade mods that take care of AI issues they mean a world of a diffrence.

tony K's AI mod does a pretty fine job in handling companions. I especially like how they autoswitch weapons and use ranged attacks in-between to soften the enemy. Have toggles for using stuff like items and abilities. And different levels of spell usage. And pretty much everything else too. This isnt DA level, but still very nice.

Companions still do some downright wacky things - like sacrifice attacks per round in order to whirlwind a single opponent.
Summoned creatures are also very annoying when they somehow miss the fact that you've killed the last target, and go into search mode looking for it. I've yet to find a way to get a summoned creature out of search mode - which means you have this useless plodding summons who always turns up late to the next fight.
Who remembers the awful AI in the earlier patches? Fighters would just stand there repeatedly turning power attack on and off, and never actually get around to doing any attacking. Ah, the good old days...

Oh, I hate when they go searching. To quickly fix it, type V, D, E (I believe that's the correct sequence).
And in general, just press V to open the command menu, it's quicker than right-clicking. "Attack nearest" (V, W, E), "follow me" (V, E, E) and "wait" (V, W, X) are the ones I use most, with the ocassional "heal me" (V, W, D ?), if I feel lazy to micromanage healing.
