Well, if you play to advance your character, look at the time spend obtaining a Spectre Pack: roughly 1 hour of playing on silver, and ~30 minutes on gold.
Spending money i have earned on advancing my character would grant me enough points to purchase 10 spectre packs with 1 hour of work (after taxes). With some quick math, that saves me anywhere between 4 and 9 hours depending on difficulty of the game.
Tell me again how that makes sense?
Paying money so you don't have to play the game?
Paying money.
So you don't...
Have. To.
Play the game.
Are we still clear on what the purpose of a game is? Or are we still thinking that spending money to remove motivation to actually play the game you're spending money on is a smart move?
This is like buying a hooker, and they giving her another $150 to pretend you had sex. This is like buying all of the current-generation D&D books just to write up a level 20 character, and then never play. This is like paying a billion dollars for a free mobile application that makes current-generation pictures look like they were taken with a low-quality camera.
Oh and then complaining about it.
Fool. Money. Parted.

No, he's not complaining about wasting money really as much as he's complaing about how broken the system is. He probably realized that it's all based on randomness and what not but didn't expect the thing to literally be broken and a waste.
So he spent money on something, $150, without even knowing what he was buying? Sorry, but that kind of stupidity breeds its own reward. He can't blame anyone but himself, especially considering if you look at the goddam description in the store it says it contains random items.
He knew what he was buying, what he didn't know was that it would be broken and get things like character cards for characters he already has maxed out with all of the appearance options. If he had played all those hours and got the 50 PSPs through credits and said he felt ripped off most of you people wouldn't be calling him an idiot and critisizing him for spending all of that time on the game.

Those packs are a slot machine. Nothing that comes out is guaranteed; the only difference between the packs and a real slot machine is the gambling addiction warning that has to be printed on the side of the latter. Im not saying your an addict or anything like that, or that purchasing packs will lead to it etc. etc...
But the mechanic is there, and it most certainly does take advantage of a lack of impulse control. "Monetary reward in a gambling-like experiment produces brain activation very similar to that observed in a cocaine addict receiving an infusion of cocaine." - Hans Breiter, MD, co-director of the motivation and Emotion Neuroscience Centre at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

The problem is that you assume that has unlimited time to farm credits, and that "playing the game" = "enjoying the game" for everyone. I enjoy the game on silver when playing with friends and having a laugh. Credit farming on the other hand, is not something that i particularly enjoy, even though it still falls under the "playing the game".
It makes sence in the way that people might want to have the best equipment avalible to them, but dont have the time farm FB:W/Geth for 9 hours a day to get it. Once you've seen all the maps and all the factions, it is not really that exciting anymore - the fun is in seeing how powerfull you can become. At least in my world.
From that perspective, the goal is not in just playing the game, but seeing the full potential of your character, and in doing so, if i can spare myself the agony of 5 hours of FB:W/Geth with randoms at the expence of 1 hour of work that i enjoy, it is a pretty fair tradeoff.
Also, a lot of people seem to have missed what the what is also in the OP... While it may be percieved as mere whining, i see it as a fair warning to all that may contemplate spending money on points: Do it, and you'll feel ripped off.

So then, no, he didn't know what he was buying. And he kept on getting packs, even though he was getting bad things? Didn't notice the trend? Didn't catch the pattern? That's a pretty clear sign of a lack of intelligence, even rodents can modify their behavior according to reaction.
If he had played all those hours and got the 50 PSPs through credits and said he felt ripped off most of you people wouldn't be calling him an idiot and critisizing him for spending all of that time on the game.
We would just be calling him an idiot for making a thread about whining about playing a game. But this is a special kind of stupid, spending 150 actual dollars without any sense of what you're buying, and they derping around because, after the fact, he didn't like what happened.
Again, I have all my gold weapons maxed out, I'm not complaining. I played the game to get my gear. I'm playing the game because I want to play the game, so I got items I wanted by doing what I wanted to do. Any idiot who approaches the game like a job and throws money at it to make it easier deserves whatever regret they subject themself to. Spending money to "save time" in a game? Okay. Whining about it afterwards?

I'm just going to stop your terrible, terrible logic right there.
You're saying you should spend money on a game you don't enjoy playing.
Go ahead and think about that now, because it's pretty clear you didn't think about it before typing it out.

Yes, so stupid. So stupid that pointing out obvious things has you just repeating the same stupid excuse over and over.
Let's review this gem:
He knew what he was buying, what he didn't know was that it would be
broken and get things like character cards for characters he already has
maxed out with all of the appearance options.
"He knew what he was buying, but didn't know what he would get". Right? Right. That was your argument. That was your response. That made sense.
You think that's a good argument, he spent $150, and I'm stupid. You got it, champ.

Heres a good read while on this topic: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambler%27s_Fallacy
That was referenced in a news story a while back, during the big lottery jackpot thing. They interviewed a "lottery expert" who said you should "play numbers that have never been picked before". He said they have a higher chance of being picked, and you could just about see it in the reporter's face when he said it, that look of "is this guy ****ing serious?"
Though he referred to it as a "principal", so... pretty sure they were trying to fill air time with stupid fluff.

Since I only play public games I think it's most fun to play on silver, but the games mostly end around wave 8-10 (before completing the objective on 10) resulting in very little credits. Because of this it takes a long time to get enough credits to buy packs, since only spectre packs are really interesting anymore (since everything I want is rare). I can always play on bronze, and I do that a lot, but it still takes at least 4 games to get enough credits for a spectre pack.
Basically, it takes a long time to unlock most things you might want so I can really understand if someone wants to buy some packs using real money just to unlock some things a bit quicker.

And your completely obtuse paradigm that this game is still going to be supported/online by EA in 6 months is far more deluded.

Ive seldom seen a bunch of similar self righteos jealous little pricks who seem to be too poor to buy some Bioware points themselves or who have all the time in the world to play a game.
Since its forbidden to insult other members, I have to point out that I am just speaking theoretically.
Oh - I spent approx 200 bucks on bioware points, no kidding - and it didn`t make a dent into my wallet.
flame me, I can take it.

Wow so much hate for a guy spending money on what he wants to spend it on. These same people would probably be angry and annoyed if someone said the same thing about them wasting their money on video games in the first place. If he has $150 to spend on PSPs and feels it's worth it instead of spending god knows how many hours it would take to buy 50 of them then more power to him.
The people who put the op down get a good feeling from it. It makes them feel superior. The op is actually providing a public service to the many with low self esteem issues. Perhaps when these people get to work, it will empower them to make those fries and burgers to the best of thier ability.
It's a win in my book.

I suppose that would've been true had I not told anyone. Not that you would tell anyone you wiped $100 across a stripper's sweaty ass right? But perhaps I should have worded it to the tune of "after having opened 50 Premium Spectre Packs", just so people don't drag things off topic.ABjerre wrote...

Don't worry about these trolls, they don't understand that not everyone is in financial ruin or living off their parents. If you want to spend money on a game you enjoy playing more power to you, they are just jealous that you can so they flame.
My thoughts exactly. People talk about $150 like its the holy grail. Its your money and you are entitled to spend them on whatever you like - if i wanted to wipe a $100 bill across a strippers sweaty ass, roll it up and smoke it, then that is exactly what i would do. And it would be noone elses business.
That being said, i would also feel ripped off having spend any amount on something, and being left with the feeling that buying packs currently leaves me with.
However, I would ask that people please remember whenever you play on your iPhone, you should be aware that people spend money all the time on in-app purchases AFTER having purchased the actual application itself, some which might even rival my own amount. This is especially true in MMORPGs. There's a big market for this. My point is that Bioware is falling far behind the competition given the general attitude of the responders that I was dumb to spend any money at all on the packs.
So I figure whether I spent $3 or $150, people would still be calling me out on it. And therein lies the point, the system is so crappy that even spending small amounts of real money would be the pinnacle of stupidity.
Would anyone disagree that it would be more worthwhile to ALL players, those that spend money or grind credits, if the system were more progressive(N7>Rare>Uncommon>Common) and rewarding(giving USEFUL power bonus cards, or even ammo cards FFS instead of useless character cards you already have and are maxed out)?
