Knowing how the trilogy ultimately ends, would you recommend a newbie to play all 3 games?

After that, play through Mass Effect 2.
And after those are finished, play through Mass Effect 1.
This cycle will repeat itself more than you can fathom.

Everyone I've told this has given Mass Effect a miss.

Play 1, 2, and most of three with The Night Mammoth's handy headcanon, for an improved experience. Stop when Shepard is injured by Harbinger, read fanfic ending instead.
Your Mass Effect experience will remain pure.

The first one was groundbreaking, the second one was good, and the last one sucked.

It's like telling somebody to watch The Godfather trilogy.

Yes, though I think Godfather 3 sucked earlier than when ME3 began to suck lol

Can't say I would highly recommend it anymore, it used to be my favorite game series of all time. Now, it is waaay down the list.

People saying no are pathetic.
The Mass Effect series is one of the best trilogies this gen, and each one are excellent games on their own.
Of course I'd recommend it.
Name calling because someone has a different opinion to you is pathetic, get some perspective.
They are though. The three games have universal acclaim across the board, are incredibly engaging and are one of the most rich and rewarding gaming experiences out there.
Call me pathetic if you wish, but I'm right, and I'm not letting the final 5 minutes sour what is and will always be an epic series. Perspective? Say that to the people who constantly moan and complain about how terrible the game is, how the ending ruined their lives, bla bla bla.
There are bigger and more important things in life y'know, there is some perspective for you.
BSN is just one big cry-fest, the tears that have flooded this board could cure Africa's drought problem a thousand times over.
Aye, it is just a game. Some will find the journey enjoyable, others will find that, like the Titantic, the end of the journey renders the entire 'getting there' a terrible memory. Both opinions are valid. I tend to fall somewhere in between.
It is definetly an important factor in whether one would consider recommending others choose to participate in a choose your own adventure immersive storytelling experience. I wouldn't recommend this to most people knowing how it ends now.

um...I think i'd recommend Gears of War tbh. The end of the tilogy is fantastic and the last few scenes are incredible! (the fight with the queen is pretty sweet too). Oh and Clayton Carmine is ftw!!
GoW Spoilers*
Are you kidding? After all 3 games, the Queen dies by getting stabbed? Anti-climax much...
Although it was with Dom's knife so that makes it a bit sweeter...
Back on topic,
I would recommend anyone play Mass Effect 1 because it is awesome even as a stand-alone game, it really is the best of the 3 provided you care about story over combat.
Mass Effect 2 I wouldn't recommend at the moment, basically because it ends on such a high that it would leave the gamer wanting more. Since that more would be ME3 yea....
As it stands currently, I wouldn't recommend ME3 to anyone, and haven't since finishing it. I even told some of my friends to not bother with it, surprisingly they actually listened too lol although they did witness how destroyed I was by it...
However, all that could be turned around by one simple word.
"Indoctrination."

if you tell them to skip 3, then they would miss out on Tuchanka, Rannoch, and London pre beam which were all excellent

ME2 felt a little like filler at the time (now we see it was ALL filler since the choices made mean jack ****).
You could play ME3 all the way until after Shepard activates the Citadel but before Hackett tells him he needs to do more, but I still wouldn't suggest it. The god awful ending and lack of any real change in the flow of the game from choices made earlier in the series makes everything feel very hollow.

Or would you simply tell them to just play up to the end of ME1 or ME2?
No. I wouldn't recommend it. I couldn't put anyone else through the ME3 soul crushing ending. And I absolutely thought ME1 was the perfect story.
