Knowing how the trilogy ultimately ends, would you recommend a newbie to play all 3 games?

um...I think i'd recommend Gears of War tbh. The end of the tilogy is fantastic and the last few scenes are incredible! (the fight with the queen is pretty sweet too). Oh and Clayton Carmine is ftw!!
Ugh...wish there was a PC version for the trilogy...

Sure I'll recommend it.They are excellent games. Just buy Mass Effect 3 used because the ending will ****** you off and you may not want to replay it.
I think if I wanted to recommend it based on replay value, I'd definitely suggest 1 & 2 without a doubt. For me, it's hard to replay 3 given I know how it will ultimately end regardless of the choices I made, but I would still suggest perhaps buying it used and playing it just to see how the characters play out

They're all good games.
However, this is one of the cases where it is best to know how things end in advance. At least the broad circumstances of it. Or just include a warning not to get too invested. Or recommend getting yourself killed by Marauder Shields, the true hero of the trilogy

In 1, I really loved some of the locations and the missions, and the reveal about Saren and the reapers was pretty awesome. Playing on Virmire was fun too. Those are all definite things I'd recommend to others. For 3, it just felt like most of the game was on rails - heading to the ultimate moment with star brat. I would have to explain to them that the last game won't feel as decision-oriented as the first two ...

There are plenty of games out there. I don't have time to trumpet the ones that were ultimately unsatisfying. If somebody wants to bring it up, then I can make a personal recommendation, but it's not on my list of things to start conversations about.

I have recently recommended all three games to a friend. I think he would love the series if he did and whilst he may end up disliking the ending, I'm confident he would enjoy talking to me about it and speculating what the Extended Cut may clarify etc.
He would not dismiss the quality of three full Video Games based on an arguably bad conclusion to said Trilogy.
^- Pretty much that. I too, talked about ME to a friend. He asked what I thought about the ending and asked if he should try the series (I've previously tried to get him to play ME1 and 2 before). I told him YES Mass Effect is still a great series but ends, as the Rachni queen would say, on a sour-note.

I would not want them to get ME 1 and 2 either; because thats money in Bioware/EA's pocket - money they have not earned because they trashed the ending of ME3 SO bad that its offensive. Why read a series if the ending sucks and is offensive?
Its one thing to say ok, hey, we messed up - lets do it right. Its another thing to sit there behind your bowl of terdsauce at a pudding contest. When people say it tastes like crap - the answer is not 'Artistic Integrity'. I say it smells like crap - do not sit there and point out that it has genuine peanuts in it.
How many people do you have to hear tell you its bad before you admit to yourself that letting Fido take a dump in the pudding was a bad idea? It takes a certain kind of person to sit there with a smile and stand behind that terdsauce pudding. Someone truly Evil, or out of touch with reality.

Has anyone seen how the game has trended? Once the ending got out, sales tanked.

I won't recommend anyone buy anything from BioWare, to be honest.

I'm sure someone will dispute vgchartz validity as a source, but looking at other games on the same site, I don't see much difference between ME3 sales drop and ME2 sales drop:

or the Bioshock salesdrop, to randomly select another game:

Those numbers really aren't that strange/unusual.

Just for the sake of comparison. If ME3 tanked, ME2 bombed.
