Knowing how the trilogy ultimately ends, would you recommend a newbie to play all 3 games?

The ending was definitely unsatisfying, but the journey was a great deal of fun. No one can say how much the ending will affect you anyway - that's a really personal thing.
I can't tell you how many times I found myself saying, "wow - this has all been so worth it!!" while playing ME3. Honestly. Up until the end, of course, but my reaction to the end was less emotionally charged than a lot of people posting here.

no every good thing about the game would make me just that much less likely to tell some one to buy it. there are a lot of good moments in the MEU and you really grow to love not just the games but the people you pick up along the way. so when the ending goes that far out of its way to trash and burn the game world and everything in it i would say no save your self the heart break its not worth it in the end.
for me I'd be trying to save people from confusion. the end left me with way more questions than answers, which is not a great way to end a long trilogy

I have promoted ME1 & ME2 (although no one seemed to be interested, but I still struggled) so I felt, in case they had tried it by now, it was my responsibility to let them know of ME3 (w/o spoilers), as I got it so quick after release.
I have the game if they'd like to try. No one has asked yet. (maybe they have it, maybe not - don't know, I haven't met any of them in a while, been too ill - but I will not recommend it to anyone)

ME 1 is however bugged to beyond when running on recent systems. Fixing it may require some determination.
edit: Actually, scratch that. All things considered, I'm now redirecting my friends to the Assasin's Creed series.

Even though I don't have ME2, I hear it is way better than #3.
I liked #3 a lot so I am going to go buy #2 next week probably.

I think you will love 2 and then really rethink 3 afterwards. Glad you enjoyed 3, though I think you will really love 2 even more

If someone were to come up to me, and say "Hey, I heard about this series Mass Effect and I was thinking of giving it a try, do you have any opinions on it?" then I would give them the full treatment - great series, completely ruined by the ending. Then they could decide for themselves whether they wanted that experience.
If the Extended Cut is satisfying to me, then I am certainly open to changing my approach.

That said, 99.9% of Mass Effect was a great series, and MP in ME3 is fun. I would suggest it.
