Knowing how the trilogy ultimately ends, would you recommend a newbie to play all 3 games?

I'd tell people to stay well clear. Up until that ending, I was an unrepentent Mass Effect fanboy.

Of course I would. I have in fact. A disappointing ending does not invalidate the rest of the games. There's no question that the Mass Effect trilogy is one of the most interesting and important games series in history. A bad ending cannot take that away, and anyone saying it does really needs to find some perspective.

no every good thing about the game would make me just that much less likely to tell some one to buy it. there are a lot of good moments in the MEU and you really grow to love not just the games but the people you pick up along the way. so when the ending goes that far out of its way to trash and burn the game world and everything in it i would say no save your self the heart break its not worth it in the end.

Play them all. It's best if you know very little about what will be revealed, but it's probably too late for that now.

The ending was definitely unsatisfying, but the journey was a great deal of fun. No one can say how much the ending will affect you anyway - that's a really personal thing.

I can't tell you how many times I found myself saying, "wow - this has all been so worth it!!" while playing ME3.  Honestly.  Up until the end, of course, but my reaction to the end was less emotionally charged than a lot of people posting here.

for me I'd be trying to save people from confusion.  the end left me with way more questions than answers, which is not a great way to end a long trilogy

Nope. There are too many other game series out there that do not leave you depressed or angry at the end. If they insisted on playing, I'd loan them my copies so they wouldn't have to spend the money.

80 hours of awesome followed by 15 minutes of crap?

Yeah I'd recommend someone to play all 3.

Yes. However, I would tell them to let the saga's hero Marauder Shields do his job and save them.

Seriously tho, still the greatest video games of all time. I'd recommend em to my grandma.

I have promoted ME1 & ME2 (although no one seemed to be interested, but I still struggled) so I felt, in case they had tried it by now, it was my responsibility to let them know of ME3 (w/o spoilers), as I got it so quick after release.

I have the game if they'd like to try. No one has asked yet. (maybe they have it, maybe not - don't know, I haven't met any of them in a while, been too ill - but I will not recommend it to anyone)

To a common gamer, I'd probably suggest they just get ME 2 as the most dynamic and flawless one. To an RPG fan, I'd suggest ME 1 as well. ME 3 is a waste of time in my book.

ME 1 is however bugged to beyond when running on recent systems. Fixing it may require some determination.

edit: Actually, scratch that. All things considered, I'm now redirecting my friends to the Assasin's Creed series.

Absolutely.  They are still great games; and it's not like everybody hated the ending.  This hypothetical newbie might like it; who am I to try and put them off?

I think I would still buy another ME game, but I'd be more cautious about it in the future

I would recommend it a few months from now when the price is cheaper. Or maybe even next year when they likely release the whole thing in a trilogy edition. Paying full price for any of it? No, I would not recommend anyone blow 60 dollars on the third game.

Yes.

Even though I don't have ME2, I hear it is way better than #3.

I liked #3 a lot so I am going to go buy #2 next week probably.

I think you will love 2 and then really rethink 3 afterwards.  Glad you enjoyed 3, though I think you will really love 2 even more

I told a friend of mine that 'at the end of ME3 there's a bit where you sit down with Anderson. Turn the game off RIGHT NOW!'

I wouldn't recommend it at all.

If someone were to come up to me, and say "Hey, I heard about this series Mass Effect and I was thinking of giving it a try, do you have any opinions on it?" then I would give them the full treatment - great series, completely ruined by the ending. Then they could decide for themselves whether they wanted that experience.

If the Extended Cut is satisfying to me, then I am certainly open to changing my approach.

We don't know how it ends because the Extended Cut isn't out yet. It may work, it may not, but you can't say difinitively.

That said, 99.9% of Mass Effect was a great series, and MP in ME3 is fun. I would suggest it.
