I actually just had this conversation with a friend the other night. He had already decided for himself that he wanted nothing to do with the third one, but he was curious about the first two since they can work decently as stand alone adventures.
As it turned out, ME2's demo was more convincing to him than anything I had to say. He disliked far too much to justify the expense. Actually that conversation with him helped open my eyes to a lot of ME2's short comings that I hadn't considered before, I still love the first two games but he made me realize quite a few short comings that ended up leading into an all night discussion of it. I'm sad to say my opinion of the franchise as a whole has slipped noticably over the past few weeks.
Knowing how the trilogy ultimately ends, would you recommend a newbie to play all 3 games?

I've already recommended people against getting into the series. I said wait until Bioware "fixes" the endings, and then if they are decent invest in the trilogy.

I recommended 1 to my 3 brothers and some friends, and they all bought it and enjoyed it. Did the same thing with 2. With ME3 I told them it was a great game but I that I found the ending to be very disappointing, but still worth getting, and none of them have touched it yet.

I'd recommend they play me1 and me2, but not me3.

I would recommend they play all three, BUT I would warn them that when they reach the ending of ME3 to just turn it off and come up with head-canon to fill the blank. As anything they imagine is better than the real thing.

People saying no are pathetic.
The Mass Effect series is one of the best trilogies this gen, and each one are excellent games on their own.
Of course I'd recommend it.

Personally I would find the series hard to recommend.
Ending aside, I don't think most new players would be terribly impressed with the rather outdated gameplay and graphics of ME1; they would really have to get into the plot before getting bored of it. Shallow I know, but I think an RPG fan would have either played it or dismissed it as not RPGish enough already, anyone else wouldn't get sucked in.

I have already told people that its good to the end of 2. I've told people that for the most part 3 is good but be prepared for disappointment.
My wife didn't get into it until after 2 had been out a while and she had no problems with the "outdated" mechanics. Geez, everything is "outdated" 1 day after its out with some people. Constantly reinventing the wheel is what causes game development cycles to be so long.
Not sure I understand why someone having a differing opinion requires the one with the different opinion to be "pathetic".

I think they should consider a version of ME1 on a tablet. Maybe that would a way to draw people in

Stop with ME2. Or play ME3 up to the ending, but don't bother with the end. ME3 has some really great parts that any fan should see, as long as they ignore the end.

They are though. The three games have universal acclaim across the board, are incredibly engaging and are one of the most rich and rewarding gaming experiences out there.
Call me pathetic if you wish, but I'm right, and I'm not letting the final 5 minutes sour what is and will always be an epic series. Perspective? Say that to the people who constantly moan and complain about how terrible the game is, how the ending ruined their lives, bla bla bla.
There are bigger and more important things in life y'know, there is some perspective for you.
BSN is just one big cry-fest, the tears that have flooded this board could cure Africa's drought problem a thousand times over.

oh man... I just got a friend to play ME right before ME3 launched. He loved it. He's currently playing Mass Effect 2 (he only 'played' ME1 through the comic book DLC.) I don't have the heart to tell him how much suck is in the ending.. He's already heard about it though, and is anxious about ME3.
yeah Bioware... he's gonna hate that ending, and thanks for ruining my rep, and helping me ruin another person's life with your ****ty artistic integrity..

Play all three even with that horrific ending..the journey is still awesome dispite the end. play all the dlc and take your time with exploration and talking to people. yes all three games are still worth the purchase and play through.

Recommended couple friends to skip it altogether since finishing ME3. ME1 ends on a cliffhanger, you will always want more, and will eventually have to get to that trainwreck of an ending.

I am actually a bit ashamed of having praised the first ME game so much that some of my friends picked it up... before I could warn them of the disaster that lay ahead... *cry* they had already started playing ME3.

I would recommend ME1 and ME2 in a heart beat!!!!
I would tell them to wait until ME3 is around $5 and pick it up then. Should only be another month or so for this.

I'd spill the ending so they know what to expect ..
After that yes for the story+background, but they shouldn't expect much from the save file transfer thing that Bioware hyped in the past.
