Knowing how the trilogy ultimately ends, would you recommend a newbie to play all 3 games?

Saying no is like saying you would not recommend the Alien movie series because they made later ones that are not as good. If you didn't see the Alien movies, your missing out on some of the best sci-fi horror there is.

The Mass Effect series is awesome period. I will not let lazy writing and stupidity ruin my enjoyment of it.

I would suggest playing ME1 and probably ME2 but would warn them against playing the final game.

I get a kick out of the people who imply that the ending of the trilogy shouldn’t mater on how you should judge the entire series. Except it does. The ending is what you have played all these games for, to see Shepard beat the snot out of the Reapers. It should live up to the highest expectations and be better than the endings we have seen in the previous games combined. It shouldn’t leave you scratching your head and asking “WTF just happened?” It certainly shouldn’t require some “clarification” download to explain things either.

Compare this trilogy ending to any other game, book or movie trilogy out there and ask your self how it REALY rates.

I won't lie, while I would still say ME is worth playing, the final scene was really out of nowhere.  I am really adamant about the idea that for a trilogy, there should really be more answers than questions in the ultimate ending.

I would suggest playing them, but that they immediately switch off the PC when Anderson dies.

um...I think i'd recommend Gears of War tbh. The end of the tilogy is fantastic and the last few scenes are incredible! (the fight with the queen is pretty sweet too). Oh and Clayton Carmine is ftw!!

Rofl I'm gonna go with this. Against all odds Epic managed to write a better story than Bioware. Gears 3's ending is almost identical to ME's, only then done right.

To OP i will say definitely play all 3 games and don't worry about the endings.

Mass Effect games are a unique experience and if you are in to sci-fi then definitely play them.

Don't expect all 3 games to play the same way as all 3 have different game style within the same universe.

I'd warn them of the less then expected conclusion but I'd recommend the series to anyone. Sure the last (most important) 5 minutes probably ruined the entire story but I doubt anyone here can say they didn't enjoy finding out that Sovereign was an actual Reaper, finding Vigil and having him tell you so much about what happened to the Protheans, finding Garrus became space punisher, listening to our favorite Salarian sing his song, or hell even curing the genophage and bringing peace to the Geth and Quarians.

To say you wouldn't recommend the entire series to somebody because of the last 5 minutes is a bit dense after all "its not about the destination its about the journey there"

I'd say play all three games, but on the third forget the ending.

Yes. I like the first two games and most of the third game. Just because I did not like the ending does not mean I would not recommend it to someone else. They can decide for themselves, they do not need me to decide for them.

Also, it would give me a chance to get a new fresh perspective on the series from some one that has not been waiting for years for the conclusion to Sheppard's story.

No way ,

I am not inflicting a case of ending depression on someone else.

The more you know Mass effect , the more you like it and adore it
The more likely your are to have one or more of being disappointed, depressed, flabbergasted, angry, in a state of perpetual disbelief.
The most positive emotion i have seen someone get from the ending was "hmm... I think i am ok with that."

SO no it wont be a recommendation from me anyone.
If i had Nuralliser i would wipe Mass effect from my own mind so that i would not have to be annoyed by the endings.

I told my friends about the ending and they rolled their eyes and said that they'll wait for another game. Regardless of what the 'it's the journey not the destination' people say, a stupid ending ruins an entire story and my friends would rather not waste their time.

I'd tell them not to bother starting. Not until we know the ending will be the one we were promised.

Nope.

I've stopped two PS3 users from diving in.

I'd probably get them to play the first. And then pretend that it was the only game to come out xD The second was just one big lead up to the 3rd game, so that would have to be left out lol.

“It's the journey, not the destination.”
I’m sorry, but I have to laugh when I see that pop up in here about the ending. That’s like going cross country to Disneyworld and finding it closed or driving to a concert to see your favorite group and they cancel or wait for it, playing 3 games in a trilogy over the last few years and countless hours in them to get a crappy ending. But the trip was great wasn’t it?

Or would you simply tell them to just play up to the end of ME1 or ME2?

I'd tell them to play the entire trilogy.

This assumes that ME is not a character-driven story but is more of a plot-driven story. The equivalent in your analogy would be college buddies driving across the country but along the way they get into some hilarious or epic situations that would make a good if senseless Hollywood movie. In that case, the movie would be all about the trip, as ME is.

But this is just opinion. Nobody's right here.

It is a great ride till the last 5 minutes, and that should not negate the 100+ hours of happiness before it, but when I felt that hit to the gut, and then the emptyness the ending gave me, I could not recommend ME without mentioning the ending ... so I guess the answer is no. I was actually trying to convince my wife to play before ME3 came out, but then she saw my reaction to the endings, my son's and my brothers, the Youtube videos and decided to give it a miss.
I am truly hoping I will feel different after the EC is released.
I want to love again!

No. Even though they would enjoy it. This is an entirely selfish decision, and my way of protesting the terrible ending. Every dollar EA/Bioware doesn't make because I don't recommend it is a small victory.

Now that the shock from the ending has settled, I'd definitely recommend playing ME1 including BdtS. Although the game has its flaws (combat mechanics really aren't that great, no paragon/renegade interrupts, you easily get ninjamanced by Liara), it still sets the mark for future role playing games for me. Also, I really like the more realistic style of uniforms, people etc. and it definitely gives you the impression of a vast universe to explore.

I really hope that at some point in the future, someone will pick up what made ME1 so great and refine it to be even greater.
