 I'm going to be starting a new Baldurs Gate 2 playthrough (this time with a good group since I've realized I've been evil in every one of my playthroughs:devil:) and was thinking about my party. I was thinking about:

1)Me(Berserker/Damage)
2)Keldorn(Main Tank)
3)Anomen(Help with heals and tanking)
4)Haer'dalis(Damage)
5)Jan(Thief/Damage)
6)Aerie(Heals/Damage)

I'm still partially new to the game so I'm just making sure I have a sturdy group and a good character. :)

That's a pretty cool group, particularly the 3 half mages can deal a lot of damage early in the game, although by the end a pure mage would do more. Among them they have some great abilities, your berzerk, Keldorn's dispel, Jan's backstab, Anomen's turn undead, Haery's offensive spin, and Aerie's faster divine casting with the robe of Venca.

There is a problem if you plan to romance Aerie, as Haery will as well. If your zerker is a girl there's no problem, and likewise if you tell Aerie you are not interested.

I would personally dump Haer'dalis and take Nalia instead, or have a group of 5 until I rescued Imoen.

Anomen can tank undead alright & Haer'dalis tanks well (best armour class in the game ) but what are you going to tank with Keldorn?

The group I went with for the first portion of the game was like this:

Me: Kensai/Melee
Minsc: Main Tank
Jaheria: Heal/Melee Damage
Nalia: Level her as a mage, almost ignoring her theif skills
Yoshimo: Thief/Ranged Damage
Aerie: Heals/Blessings/Ranged Damage

Part 2, after you visit spellhold:

Me: as above
Minsc: As above
Jaheria: As above
Imoen: Again, level as a mage
Jan: Thievery/Ranged damage
Either Aerie or Keldorn depending on the mission. If i was expecting longer fights, id go aerie due to the heals, however, keldorn can do some pretty decent damage with the right gear.

Just beware that any good group without Minsc, is a fail. He made the game for me. I think i even had him at -7 armour class at some point too.

Immune to hold. Immune to charm. Free action armour. Paladin saving throws. He'll tank just fine for most enemies. I wouldn't rely on it in a no-reload but high level paladins can wade in against elder orbs (or at least my cavalier could).

Haer'dalis can buff better (not convinced about Anomen) but in some situations Keldorn will be the better choice. The zones in Watchers Keep where the party are hit by de-buffs for example.

Ok, Immune to hold & charm spells is nice when you are fighting a mage & I can see him standing up against an Elder Orb. :wub:

He has good hit points but terrible armour & while his ‘Dispel’ is nice to remove multiple debuffs at once it doesn’t really help him absorb damage… Don’t get me wrong, the guy can lay down a can of whoopass but unless you’re prepared to use “Rod of Resurrection” then you’ll have trouble keeping him up while tanking.

Haer'Dalis gets a bad rep for his low hit points but IMO it’s worth learning how to use him.

Armour;
A typical vanilla game gives him “Melodic Chain +3”, “Ring of Earth Control”, “Cloak of the Sewers”, “Dusty Rose Ioun Stone” & “Buckler +1” for -6 armour.
You could also give him “Gauntlets of Dexterity” for an extra +1 but IMO other NPC (like Keldorn) will make better use of it…If you want to push it then “Ring of Gaxx” & “Wondrous Gloves” add an extra +1 each for a -8 total which doesn’t sound like much until you stack his buffs on top.

Spells;
‘Blur’ adds a + 3 buff which drops him down to -11 & if you have a Cleric then ‘Defensive Harmony’ will add 2 more temp (6 rounds) points for -13.

Other buffs;
‘Defensive Spin’ adds an extra 10 ( actually it’s +1 per level until level 10) which pushes him down to -23.

HLA;
UAI is an obvious pick for a better helmet & I like “Corthala Family Armor” if Valygar's not needed… I personally give him “Vhailor's Helm” so I can have him sing and attack in the late game (see EBS).

EBS- Enhanced Bard Song is the one that a lot of people overlook because by then you have hit the cap but it is a good enough buff that he no longer needs a shield/ D-spin and can go on the offensive more.

p.s. Keldorn does not get ‘Free action’ in vanilla… that must be a mod.

P.p.s I forgot to declare weapons, some people prefer to give him 1 or 2 armour enhancing weapons & there are several examples but IMO the best of these is “Defender of Easthaven +2” because of the extra resistance which does stack with his innate racial resistance.

I was also thinking about making my char a tank instead and spec Anomen as a healer and have Aerie mainly focus on damage. ;)

As far as tanking goes, both Keldorn and Anomen tank much better if using the gauntlets of dexterity -- suppose it's no accident those gauntlets are during Keldorn's quest.
