I agree that Asians get a raw deal when it comes to American media. Even though there are many Asian Americans, you never see Asians as the main character in movies unless they're about karate or geisha, and there are very few in western video games. That said, it would kind of suck if EVERY character in the ME universe was Asian or looked Asian. Even if that would be the direction humanity was heading, in North America right now it's far from true. Living here we see so much racial diversity that it would be weird for all the characters to be one race, especially a race that is a minority in current day North America. (except where it fits a sequestered place or historical period like Jade Empire where you'd expect everyone to be Asian or Lord of the Rings where you'd expect them to be Europeoan)

I loved seeing characters from a variety of races and being able to make my Shepard any race I wanted! My very first Shepard was Asian and male even though I am white and female I built his face to match that huge awesome scar in ME1 I made him look like a yakuza guy but he ended up being paragon and that face looked hilarious with the paragon speech and expressions XD

My sheps have been:

White: 1 female (cloned in ME2 for romances) 3 male
Hispanic: 1 male (my main and favorite!)
Asian: 1 female (just started her on ME1) 1 male
Black: 1 female
Middle eastern: 1 male

It would suck for me to be shoehorned into 1 race T_T

Does the notion that America might not possibly be the dominant country in 200 years bother you? I don't understand that. My personality is that I always plan for the worst, not hope against all hope for the best.

This never ever crossed my mind. I just assumed that everyone turned into some halfway mutt mix of everything, sometimes more strongly certain bits, and dialect was only affected by birthplace like it primarily is now. There are all sorts of accents on the human players that you can place if you really listen well.

Ok briefly commenting on the America discussion here, the US isn't the super power it once was. Internal problems such as stock market crashes and low employment rates are affecting the country worse than it would say China simply because of the economic (Capitalism) system they use. In a place like China they will tell you to build a road to a dead end simply for the sake of working. Too many "rights" get thrown around in the US for their system to remain stable.

Enough of that off-topic rubbish.

They stated in the game and perhaps the codex I am not 100% sure that Humanity, unlike the other spacefaring races still maintains a wide diversity in their gene pool. This was one of the reasons why the Collectors and Reapers took such an interest in the species. This is why you see Asians and Africans as well as Whites (I use these terms as a very loose generalisation) roaming around the galaxy in the game. As for main characters though I believe that BioWare was simply catering to who they believe is their chief demographic audience. Also it would be nice to see more of these ethnic groups displayed as main characters however this would only be the case in a truly utopian world and as we have seen the galaxy is far from utopian.

Kinda side-tracking in the topic, but to continue in your line of thought: yes, it's very difficult to use non-White protagonists in Western media and make people forget about their "culture."

I haven't seen the movie for Hunger Game, but I stumbled upon an article. Part of it shows how disappointed the fans were that a Caucasian actress was picked to play the role of a Native American girl... See, in the novels you have a certain number of descriptions and hints for race and physical appearance. The director and producers decided to change that and use what they thought would please the viewers. 

Kind of an extreme case that doesn't really apply to Mass Effect. But, you know... just saying.

Interesting, I too have not seen The Hunger Games but I will definitely read that article. I always find it interesting when a developer or director thinks they are making the right decision by changing aspects to appeal to an audience when in reality all the audience wants is what was stated in the original piece of work.

"American" doesn't necessarily translate to "white", you know. You're free to make Shepard a black, Latino, Asian or any other ethnicity you can imagine. Meer and Hale do have distinctive American accents, but considering that the US of A doesn't exist in the ME-verse anymore (it's been merged into the Greater North American States which also consists of Canada and Mexico), I think it's a pretty minor point to be complaining about.

I find it amusing how some Americans get offended by the notion that America might not be the dominant country forever. There are many ways to interperet the data. You could look at current trends and extrapolate, which results in China surging ahead, or you could say "China might fall and America could retake the lead". This sounds like optimistic thinking to me, but there is some evidence that China might stumble, but there's also some evidence they could adapt. China's changed so much in the last 20 years it's very difficult to predict which way they'll go. Speculating they might pull ahead of us is not hatred towards America, it's just an honest assessment of the facts.

1) China is well known to siphon stolen tech from numerous countries which happens often
2) China is well known to have horrendously bad human rights issues
3) China is well known to have simply a large standing force but the worlds number 4/6 AF/Navy respectively
4) China has had 2000 years to surge ahead and have not, track record matters considering they still are not "ahead" during an economical downtime in the states

The list goes on. Stop masking your desires for China on the ME3 forums. Your passive aggressive attitude is simply stupid. Just be a man and come right out on what you want to say instead of beating around the bush. You are so confident in your thought process? Well why not just say what you want to say.

Wasn't Anderson born in London? Yet he has an American accent. 


My Shep is a mix of African and Chinese... she's Earthborn, but no idea what city she's from. I think that at the point in time that Mass Effect takes place, Earth nationality has really taken a backseat to galactic identity... so it doesn't really matter anyway.

Asian traits can be lost quite easily. Children from 1 European and 1 Asian tend to look more European. Even Asians with darker skin races, their offspring tend to be dark skinned and round eyed.

Its just that European traits tend to be more prominent, and that Asian traits seem to fade away easily.

This is typical of people making assumptions. I no more want China (as it is currently) to dominate the world than any free citizen. That doesn't mean that's not the way it's gonna happen, though. I see quite alot of American qualities that could easily bring about its downfall, including:

1) The assumption that it will always be "number 1" from it's citizenry. Complacency and overconfidence is a weakness. 
2)  There's quite a bit of anti-intellectualism that is incredibly prevalent in this country, from hating scientists because of the evidence of evolution and global warming they produce, to making fun of smart people for being "nerds" or saying things like "one of those people that's smart with books but dumb with life" or some other such nonsense. People assume that if you're smart, you can't figure out normal tasks.
3) Comments like things my family says such as "people that vote for Obama should be kicked out of this country or shot" doesn't help, either. Those such comments are not hard to find in certain circles, I should mention. If people like my family manage to take control of this country for any extended period of time, it will only lead to decline. Trust me, people that think like that are only too powerful as a group right now.

That's why I said, out loud, "really?" right the same moment Shepard said it. What happened in London during Anderson's childhood that his family had to move to America/Canada? DId he even visit London afterwards? Did his parents have the same accent? Did they even talk at all with him?

You said earlier that would be your "last post". I don't really care that is wasn't but need to point out that you can't even follow through on your own statement.

Regardless,
1) So what if that is what the citizenry think in that regard? Good for them and their patriotism. I am 100 percent positive (being that I have been mostly everywhere) that most countries say the exact same thing about their own country. That makes this an absolute moot point in my book.
2) Making fun of people for being "nerds"....really....THAT would lead to a downfall of a nation? Hate to tell you but "nerds" have been called "nerds" for a long time. Originally called bonks, to geeks, to nerds. This has utterly nothing to do with the downfall of a country because everyone knows those are the guys that invent later in life and have been. Stealth tech (which China attempted to steal), and the like are what these guys/gals produce as they fit into their life/occupation. Again though, this has utterly no effect on the downfall of nation. Nothing, zil, zip, nada. It sounds like on this example you are giving out your own personal experiences because I do not see how any rational person could feel this could lead to the downfall of a nation.
3) I know nothing about your family so this is also a moot point. Some people think Obama is a bum and his record indicates he has been. Some people think he has been a God send. Opinions are like as.....oh nevermind. Regardless, opinion doesn't lead to downfalls of a nation.

Let me ask you this. What exactly do you believe leads to a decline in a country because all you mentioned truthfully seem like personal issues you have dealt with. I am actually not trying to be offensive on that but that is simply how it looks. A decline in a country deals with considerably different things.
