And of course one of the villain has to have an explicitly 'dominant chinese heritage' because humanity is morally divided like that -.-

Ash is Brazillian.

She went to basic training in Brazil, but that doesn't mean she is Brazilian. Shepard goes to basic training at the same facility, even with the Colonist background.

In other words, many Alliance Marines pass through that training facility regardless of their place of origin.

I think Ashley is supposed to be American or Canadian, though with partial Latin ancestry.

Everybody is from or want to be in Vancouver. It's the only city known to have Shepard's endorsement.

These answers are all really interesting; I personally thought Ashley had Italian heritage and Kaidan was half-asian.

Also, Khalisah Al-Jilani is of arab descent, and i'm sure it's easy enough to guess where Emily Wong's ancestors lived.

Well, let's face it. If ME3 would have a Dutch protagonist the whole Reaper conflict would be solved by visiting a coffee shop, wher Shep and Harby would talk it over. Not really action-packed, now is it?

On a more serious note, I do get your point. In the DA2 forums, I asked for more 'diversity' of character for DA3. Only the English, American and French people are in the game now, why no Italians, Spaniards (or is Isabela Spanish?), Germans or Dutchies?

Codex mentions nation states still exist in the in 22nd century and that there is still a vast difference between the wealthy and poor countries, as such it shouldn't surprise you that westerners would be more prominently represented in space.

As far as language I guess they could have gone the Firefly route and just made it a mix between English and Chinese

All humans in the ME universe are huge mixes. Anderson, for example, is African/Native American/British. The best discussion on race is in Mass Effect: Revelation. Diversity among humans in the ME universe is slowly being bred out, since the whole planet is united under the Human Systems Alliance, there aren't barriers that prevent different human races from having offspring the way there are today. The conclusion in the book was that, in a few years, most everyone would be just huge mixes.

That depends on whether you view Rivaini (Isabela) and Antivan (Zevran) people as Spanish, or Portuguese or some mix of them with Italians maybe?

Too few Russians to believe that justification. ATM all manned spaceflight is done with Russian tech and Russian participation. Outside of the existance of Rosenkov Materials (which is, technically, a Bulgarian name) and that one guy on Noveria, there's little acknowledgement Russia even exists in the MEverse.

But tropes will be tropes and the media hasn't moved beyond the beliefs that viewers can't associate with anything beyond straight white male or national stereotypes. It's quite tragic/frustrating really.

Now I really feel like a broken recorder...

Oh guys, Bioware didn't only hire Russian voice actors who are the only people to be in space because this game obviously takes place in real life, preorder canceled.

I do so hate people that quote entire posts (with quotes in them) and then reply to the last line.

I didn't say there should only be Russkies out there. I said there shouldn't be only ONE of them among the hundred or so of human characters that we see. What is so horrible about that statement?

Because this whole topic is pretty ridiculous, and who gives a ****. I quoted your whole post, and I'm only responding to your question. Get over it.

Ah, the Political Correctness topic. Long time no see. Imho this game lacks penguins. Yes, not enough penguins. I wonder what Bioware intended to tell with that ridiculous omission.

People tend to default to writing what they know.

I think that's also why there's a lack of female human authority figures

Damn...Shepard has a Canadian accent...can't you tell?

And OP, writers tend to write stories that are familiar to readers because that way the readers can relate to the stories. It's the same reason why there are so many British characters in Harry Potter.

Just a quick question, anyone know where Donovan Hock originated from? Could never place the accent, probably cause it was so terrible =P

I thought it was because all of it takes place in the UK =) ME, on the other hand, throws us all over space =)

I actually was very pleased that a lot of planet names were Russian in ME1. There also were some Russian weapon manufacturers. To my taste ME1 had great diversity in names, it wasn't pro-american. Haven't finished ME3 though, so I don't know how things are there.

For the record, I actually think the "Americans" are really Canadian, seeing as Bioware is based in Canada. Well, technically anyone who lives on the American continents is "American", though the term is typically applied when refering to people from the USA. Or maybe, that's what you meant?

Confusing, much? Oh, my head... Image IPB

Japanese video games produced some of the greatest American heroes in MGS.

What being Westerner does mean to you OP???.....being Westerner now and most certainly in the future will be more and more detached from an ethnical concept.

Is like being Romans in the ancient time. All citizens of the Empire were Romans but they were not just latin but also greek, gallic, germanic, egyptian, african.....so if all heroes are westerners this doesn't mean there is no variety because the same concept of westerner is complex and multi-ethnical
