Codex mentions nation states still exist in the in 22nd century and that there is still a vast difference between the wealthy and poor countries, as such it shouldn't surprise you that westerners would be more prominently represented in space.

As far as language I guess they could have gone the Firefly route and just made it a mix between English and Chinese

Exactly.

And add to the fact that most western cultured countries have merged into two large super states, and their only real non-western challenger is the Chinese People's Federation, I would totally expect a Firefly-esque mixture off-world if not for the Systems Alliance.

But one thing does get me though. The Russians. They are last European country I would expect to to join the EU. It would have been neat if the Russian Federation and their CIS would have evolved into the fourth superstate.

I was thinking about this last night in the shower (great mental image, I know) and was wondering why all of the human heroes seem to be Westerners. I mean we have:

American:
Shepard, Ash, Kaiden, Pressley, Adams, Jacob, Jack, Kelly, James.

British:
Zaeed, the new yeoman, Anderson (born in London, but if he's a pom then I'm a turnip).

Australian:
Miranda

Scottish:
Donnelly (sp?)

The only non-Western 'good guy' is Kasumi. Oh and an American with the surname of Mikhailovich. Surely some diversity in terms of accents would have been possible? One Asian, no Arabs, no Eastern Europeans, no Africans. Actually James would have been a great character to have as a Pacific Islander or Kiwi given their general build.

Still, discuss.

This is a game produced by a western company and marketed in western countries.  The largest of those western markets are the US, Canada, and Europe.  The voice acting talent that the company is most familiar with is generally western.

This should come as no surprise.  There is no conspiracy here to exclude Asians, Arabs, Africans, or any other group.  The game is simply tailored to the market it will have to sell in.  That's all it's about.

Yeah and all the heroes in Japanese video games are Asian. So should we be pissed at that too OP? Really get a new hobby if it bothers you so.

Unless you see all anime characters as Japanese that's not the case.

If you go out looking for a reason to be offended by something, you can be sure you'll find it.

Well if it's any consolation the ending seems to have three ethnicities, or at least three colours. And for bonus points they're all equal. Affirmative action FTW!

She's pretty effin' French. The only way they could've made it more obvious is if they gave her a beret, a mustache and a cigarette.

I'd like to point out that there are a few benighted places other than France that are afflicted with French speech.  Quebec, Belgium, Switzerland, and a variety of African countries.

The fact that she speaks with a French accent doesn't say a lot about her nationality and not much more about her ethnicity.

Ok whatever you noob, she is from French descent.

.....I get so tired of the PC crap. this is one of the most diverse games I have ever played. Gay, Lesbian, straight, Alien, black, brown, white, BLUE=Asari, RED=Wrex, GREEN =Thane, reptillian, insectiod, mammal, amphibian, freaking AIs, ect, ect, ect, ect.....geez people, get a clue. If you can't see the diversity in this game, you are blind in one eye and refuse to look out of the other.

Nationalities can be inferred as well given the accents of some of the players. The victim mentality of this generation....always looking for ways people are slighting them instead of just living life. There are far too many places where people are ACTUALLY descriminated against still so complaining about diversity in a game that is freakin' STUFFED with diversity is just idiotic.

Scottish = British. Also, Hackett was apparently born in Argentina. Apart from that, I agree with your post. The lack of diversity is probably due to the lack of local non-western voice actors.

It's a Western game, so it only makes sense. How many Western main characters are there in JRPGs?

There's also Dr. Michel, whose nationality I can't place.

Dr. Michel is French. How is that not obvious?

I don't really play jrpgs but even I've seen a bit of final fantasy 7. Aren't the clouds, tifas barretts and whatnots westerners?

In ME1 Michelle was the only person that made me not think I was in Canada.

I get a wee lol everytime I see a description of Kai Leng and it talks about his Slavic jaw. Wow you really gave that a lot of thought didn't you Bioware!

Kasumi doesn't seem Japanese at all. She's exactly like one of those "Asian-Americans" on telly.

Yeah Javik's definitely the least westerly character. Yet it really seems out of place being an alien and all...

Yeah Javik's definitely the least westerly character.

What about Tali and Shala'Raan with their fun ethnic accents? If not for the mishmash of the rest of the named Quarians (with Aussie Daro'Xen and Brits Han'Gerrel and Zaal'Koris, as well as American Kal'Reegar), we'd call the Quarians Space Gypsies!

Donnelly may have a Scottish accent but its far from perfect but i suppose if it was a strong accent then everyone wouldn't understand us.

Ha, Ash is as brazillian as Anderson is British.

Because all people from brazil have to be black and all brits are white? What kind of racist bull* is that?

Captain_Obvious_au wrote...

As for Shepard, the accent is clearly North American. Plus if anyone wants to go into the 'oh yeah but people aren't as diverse any more!' - surely if there's a North American, British, and Australian accents still around, the others are too.

Yeah, and let me tell you something. I am german, i prefer to watch TV series in their orginal language and if i am listening to what they consider to be "german accents" or even "german" language in most of the american TV shows, i rather feel like vomiting.

I have family in the US, my wife is from new york and whenever i am meeting people and they hear i am german, i usually get told that my accent isn't sounding anything like the way they imagined a germans accent to be.

Ever considered that people, living in a location with a certain accent for a prolonged time, start to pick up on the accent? An ex-coworker of mine, moved to germany 20 years ago. He started out with broken german, went to fluent and by now has a thick regional accent like a person that has been born and raised here. Why? Because he works with people who do use that regional accent alot.

This isn't some X-Men Nightcrawler crap where that guy lives day in and out for 20 years in American and seems to be unable to speak either german nor english. And yes, what he is speaking in the Marvel comics is most of the time totally incomprehensible for me as german. Dutch is closer to german than most of the stuff you see on American TV shows and comics.

So please, cut the racist act. Just because you have an accent of some region it doesn't mean you have to be born in that region. And just because someone isn't the stereotype color doesn't mean they ain't born there. There are a lot of Black and 'Asian' people born in Europ, the US and a lot other countries than their stereotype countries.

Besides... i personally probably would take more offense by having to have the Enterprice crew in this day and age.. with a quota russian, black and asian guy.

Only the English, American and French people are in the game now, why no Italians, Spaniards (or is Isabela Spanish?), Germans or Dutchies?

That depends on whether you view Rivaini (Isabela) and Antivan (Zevran) people as Spanish, or Portuguese or some mix of them with Italians maybe?

Codex mentions nation states still exist in the in 22nd century and that there is still a vast difference between the wealthy and poor countries, as such it shouldn't surprise you that westerners would be more prominently represented in space.

Too few Russians to believe that justification. ATM all manned spaceflight is done with Russian tech and Russian participation. Outside of the existance of Rosenkov Materials (which is, technically, a Bulgarian name) and that one guy on Noveria, there's little acknowledgement Russia even exists in the MEverse.

Russia has a declining ecnonomy, population, and educational system perfectly feasibly they would not be represented in a large way. Alternative theory EU has became one nation including Russia and national lines have begun to merge.

Or Space exploration was so expensive only the bodies with vast sums of money were able to fund it, namely the United States( In mass effect time the United North American states so at the very least USA+ Canada), EU, Mainland China ( now called Chinese People's confederation)

Didn't say anything about quotas. Said that it's unrealistic that most everyone has Anglicized names.

Good point, although it still shouldn't affect ethnicities all that badly. I think.

Kaidan is Canadian, IIRC, but his name betrays a Polish ancestry.

There's a Polish word kajdan (pronounced the same as Kaidan's name) but it's not a Polish name. It has Arabic origins, though there's also a word kaidan in Japanese. Alenko is Ukrainian last name.

I think someone has grown up in the age of political correctness as it's a ridiculous thing to even think about. Japanese and Korean developers use mostly Asian hero's and that's just fine with me. It's the developers story and the hero's can be whoever they want.

I found this amusing throughout the whole game. The Protheans and the Africans have the similar accents! Does this mean aliens landed in Africa millions of years ago?
