I actually think Bioware did a good job, they're a Canadian company, so ofcourse most of the actors they use will be from there and America too. They still managed to have a pretty good amount of diversity.

Now games that always paint the Americans as good guys and Russians as bad, thats the real problem.

Anyway I'm pretty sure Ash is of a latin background, not American, or atleast half. And well she (like Kaidan) is a spacer and not from Earth. I also find it strange that you listed Britain and Scotland as two seperate places, lol.

Only the English, American and French people are in the game now, why no Italians, Spaniards (or is Isabela Spanish?), Germans or Dutchies?

That depends on whether you view Rivaini (Isabela) and Antivan (Zevran) people as Spanish, or Portuguese or some mix of them with Italians maybe?

Codex mentions nation states still exist in the in 22nd century and that there is still a vast difference between the wealthy and poor countries, as such it shouldn't surprise you that westerners would be more prominently represented in space.

Too few Russians to believe that justification. ATM all manned spaceflight is done with Russian tech and Russian participation. Outside of the existance of Rosenkov Materials (which is, technically, a Bulgarian name) and that one guy on Noveria, there's little acknowledgement Russia even exists in the MEverse.

Russia has a declining ecnonomy, population, and educational system perfectly feasibly they would not be represented in a large way. Alternative theory EU has became one nation including Russia and national lines have begun to merge.

Or Space exploration was so expensive only the bodies with vast sums of money were able to fund it, namely the United States( In mass effect time the United North American states so at the very least USA+ Canada), EU, Mainland China ( now called Chinese People's confederation)

Mexico is also part of the UNAS. The UNAS Air Force covers the airspace over the former Federal Republic of Mexico.

What I don't understand is why there aren't any Chinese in the ME universe. Right now IRL, China is certainly a powerhouse in world economics/politics. Hell, they're even talking about putting a Chinese man on the moon. Why did they seemingly disappear off the map in the ME universe? I would have expected there to be far more Chinese making up numbers in the Systems Alliance given China's huge economy.

Western games = Western heroes
Eastern games = Eastern heroes

Makes sense to me.

This is a WESTERN game therefore the main characters will be western.

I play Japanese games and I don't complain about the main characters being Japanese.

Took the words right out of my mouth Thaough it would be nice to see more ethnic diversity in video games. Also Kaiden is Canadian but isn't his ethnicity Thai?

She's pretty effin' French. The only way they could've made it more obvious is if they gave her a beret, a mustache and a cigarette baguette.

I corrected that for you. Although i believe that the most obvious would be a mime with a baguette.

Ha, no the "explanation" is just that the game creators did as most speculative fiction does created in the US. When there is some Galaxy wide organization, the representatives of Earth will be Western. That's because the "Earth" is usually a stand-in for the West, and their believes, policies, etc will usually have a Western/American bias and discuss themes and issues relevant to that population. That's true for Star Trek, Bab 5, whatever. It isn't simply western games = western people, because game creators have often tried to create characters from other regions of the world. No "eastern" characters in Resident Evil or Metal Gear Solid.

However, you all must give props to BW for giving Javik an African voice actor, the Protheans being the original people, and Africa is the cradle of civilization.

I think a more interesting discussion would be to muse about what alien race is analogous to what civilization in our world, past or present (like Quarians are like Palestinians, etc)

Lol this.

In all seriousness, i think we(non-british europeans, etc) have made the english speaking people a bit too comfortable by learning their language, so now they cannot imagine a world where the dominant language is not english.

Fun fact: There are currently more people in the world that speaks chinese, spanish and indian than there are people speaking english

I am grateful, however, that the main language in the Mass Effect universe is not chinese. But I do think that north americans could be a bit more aware of other languages in the world when imagining our grand future.  ;)

There are more people because of their population, that's all. It's completely irrelevant. Unless you go in China or India, where will you speak these languages. Also it's only true is you consider it only as native language.
Fact is Pretty much anywhere you go you can speak english, and that's what it is.

Fun fact: English is the first language by total number of speakers (almost 2 billions) (1.1 billion for china if you want to know)

The French do smoke a lot. And by that I mean A LOT. So either way, it was a good analogy.

But I woulda kicked zeu Docteur  out the airlock if she pulled out a cig while we talked.

Yes that is true, and as i said i am grateful that ME is not in chinese. But i think it would be apropriate for science fiction writers everywhere to recognize other languages a lot more than they do now.

And not just earth languages, how wierd is it that evey asari is aparently american? I guess that everyone uses some kind of personal translator, but do they only come in the American Gal 2.0 voice edition?

I know, i know, its one of those leaps of faith that we have to take to make the story easier to understand, but a little realism wouldnt hurt sometimes.

Also there are only 380 million native english speakers, compared to the 1.1 billion native chinese speakers

And then we have Firefly:wub:

The vision of the future varies completely with where you are at a given time. For me who lives in Europe, the future would be filled with Arabic-speakers and I would have learned a lot more words than just salam aleikum and the basic insults - lol, although in these times, insulting these people wouldn't be very smart.

You can look at Ash and tell shes of spanish descent with those big brown eyes but her grandfather was white so I'm going to go with mixed.

It is heavily implied shepard is canadian

When I last went to Hong Kong at looked out at the city from the top of Victoria Peak, what I saw reminded me of the citadel as viewed by Kaiden, Shepard, and Ashley during the "tinfoil miniskirt" conversation. The Asians hold the future. We Americans look down on people with an education, and mock them for being smart. The Asians admire Engineers and Scientists, hold them with awe and respect. This attitude will eventually cause them to surpass us, if they haven't surpassed us already. If ME was realistic, most of the human characters in the series would be asian.

Please don't tell me you're complaining that Mass Effect doesn't have enough racial diversity in it. If you are please just leave.
