Given the limited development time, why did they "re-invent" the game?

I think BioWare is focussing too much on the gameplay experience and not enough on maintaining a coherent setting.

You think so, Sylvius?
It seems to me the thing Bio is really focusing on right now is the characters/relationships/romances stuff. Which would be fine - it's their speciality- except that everything else (combat, exploration, stealth, side quests, etc.) is kind of getting swept under the carpet.

I get the feeling that combat is still going to be the flagship *insert new marketing buzzword* in DA3.

Some things Mike has said in the recent past and David's remark's.

Q: What features, if any, from DA2 do you think is a cool idea but needs better implementation?
[*]A: Most of them. Iteration is key. I'd say combat is probably the one that Mike is focusing on the hardest.

Oh well,in case the above is true, the only combat we will get is to fight for our loves.

Seriously,though....it would appear that right now they are indeed providing more feedback on relationships/characters and the armor customization, but I am sure they are listening to your suggestions regarding the gameplay mechanics, even though the threads devoted to the topic do not seem as popular.Actually,I have seen a lot of dev input lately regarding dialogue mechanics, exploration and level design.
I,for one,do not envy Bioware for the pressure they are under, but they have made diamonds before, and I hope they will do it again.

I think all of those things are currently subservient to BioWare's vision of how the game should be played.

Instead, I'd like them to consider all of the ways in which the game can be played, and support them by offering a consistent platform within which to enjoy them.  For that, they need internally consistent mechanics (all sorts of mechanics) and believable level and encounter design.

My impression was that the art for Origins was made so long ago, because that game had such a long development period, that the devs just were no longer happy with it. They felt that they could do better. So they changed their art direction for DA2 so that they could carry it (and its assets) forward into DA3 and oneward, rather than a) being stuck with an art style they weren't proud of, or B) not changing art styles until the 3rd game, at which point people would throw an even bigger fit.

I actually prefer the art style of DA:O. Sure, the graphics engine was a bit outdated, but they would have been better off expanding the DA:O engine with physics and DX11 graphics effects, instead of starting again from scratch to make something notably worse.

Also, the main complaint about DA:O people seem to have, I don't agree with; combat speed was just about perfect, allowing the player time to adapt and execute various strategies. The 'shuffling' people complain about, I never even noticed.

I completely agree.

Indeed.  If you got your character into position before triggering the ability, there was no shuffle.

And if you didn't get your character into position first, the shuffle in DAO was exactly the same as the shuffle in DA2.

Yes, the style of DAO was quite dark, the closest thing to it seems to be The Withcer. A refined engine that keeps the same saturation and general theme would have been much better than DA2, which was much too bright and colorful for my tastes.

I think that the combat was a tad bit slow, but it did not need to be amped up to the overkill speed DA2 was at. I think if the kept the DAO combat, but multiplied the time between basic attacks by .7 would be the right pace.
