Alpha Protocol is severely underrated, 'tis true. That reminds me, I should probably do another playthrough sometime.

I guess the eight month delay really hurt it, it was technically outdated when it was released. But still I had a lot of fun playing it, and still go back to it from time to time, and I still manage to discover new things !
Very good game indeed marred by some gameplay flaws but still very enjoyable !
And who knows since they are exploring the kickstarter option, maybe one day AP2 will see the light of day...

It's terrible linear level design was what let it down most. The gameplay mechanics were kinda broken, yeah, but had they give you much more open environments and better level design ala Deus Ex (1), the clunky gunplay and silly AI would've been less annoying (just like Deus Ex 1, hence the example).
Still, underrated in the context of most contemporary games.

I like the game but hate Michael Thornton's voice acting. Possibly the most monotone work I've ever heard.

But like I said, doesn't SEGA actually own the rights to the game and its sequel?julio77777 wrote...

I'm sorry I didn't pick this up when it came out because of all the bad reviews. I just picked it up recently on the bargain rack, and found it to be severely underrated. The gameplay is as bad as its reputation, but the story, characters, and dialogue were great, and few RPGs do choice and consequences better.

I honestly don't think the gameplay is bad. It just takes some serious getting used to.
I could nitpick about some details (everyone always can) but I really should go back and replay this awesome game. I particularly enjoy the dialogue system with the timed decisions. Feels so much more significant that way than with a dialogue wheel that flat out tells you what to pick if you want to be "good", "evil" or "neutral".

I'm just bummed there won't be a sequel.

It really hurts me how underrated this game is. I just hope Obsidian can make a similar game with a new IP.
It would be nice to see AP2 with our decisions changing the game but that would be wishfull thinking.

I find the game plays very similar to the first ME. I personally think it's a fantastic game.

Yeah, the moving-reticle mechanic was brought back, though I think The original Mass Effect handled that far better. In terms of pure-roleplaying, Alpha Protocol is at least on par, if not the better of the two - I just didn't care for how they handled the fighting/stealth sections.

It was buggy and not that long. Other than that, it was a good game.

It is short. Where I found it really shined was on replays and seeing how the story played out differently enough based on different choices.

Not sure why anyone would think Alpha Protocol would be crappy. It is an original IP created by Chris Avellone, Josh Sawyer and the awesome devs at Obsidian. It is quite a good game and after three playthroughs, I've only encountered 1 bug that set me back about 4 hours, which wouldn't have been the case if I remembered the age old rule for all RPGs - Save often.

Alpha Protocol is criminally underrated. It has its issues of course but none deserving of the critical panning it received.

I agree, in my opinion it's the best game Obsidian made so far.

Seriously under-rated, this game has one of the best endings ever ( Well one out of thirty i think?).
Blowing Westridge away and walking out of there with Leyland, only to hand him a portable land mine as you smugly tell him that he is no longer needed as you can start your own Hallbech ..brilliant stuff

The shocking part is how abandoned the game looks by now. It's not even that old, and the "support" website is a joke. I have a European version which of course will NOT accept the standard patch, so I had to go through a few unofficial sites with broken links to find the right one.

I bought this game, because they said it's an espionage RPG. And I was surprised how good it was. The characters are great and conversations are even better. I like the limited time to choose your answers.

I would go as far as to say that the game is not only underrated, but a hidden masterpiece. Easily the best RPG I played in terms of micro-choices and consequences, in addition to having my favorite protagonist in video games.

The controls ruined the game for me. Whoever thought was good idea to have different speed aim/tracking between perspective sight and shooting sights is the one to blame why I have never finished the game. Other than the controls and graphics being so dated now, the poor movement and such.. Other than those the game was good but due to those is why I probably will never bother to complete it.

I found some guide with controller settings for the game and I used those. This really made it a lot more playable. I don't remember exactly, but I think you have to manually enter something into a configuration file.
