I'll volunteer to be the scared Gold newbie. N7 170 or so, Level 20 Human Engineer, I'll go where you tell me to and spam Overload till all enemies are cleared. I know I'm not a great player, but I try hard and I will always have your back.

Oh, heck. Any advice for someone who's only ever accidentally done gold?

(Once, survived to partial extraction, barely edged out of 4th place finish. Cost a full round of expendables)

Like, what sort of class/build/role can I play to be less of a carry?

Easiest setup is Geth on Firebase White, it can get boring though.

As for class, any Salarian is always a good bet, or Asari Adept. Drell/Justicar is also good, especially if you have someone there to detonate your Reave.

The easiest would probably be to play Salarian Engineer and just run Decoy/Energy Drain spam, though. You might not score incredibly high, but Decoy is rather amazing even with the nerf to it recently.

Try to work to your teams best interests, Look at their classes before the game.

A Infiltrator is a great asset to any team that does not have one, depending on the enemy you are fighting if you are fighting Geth try the Quarian with Sabotage if it isn't geth or it is Random go with the Salarian imho this classes job will be to get the objectives if they are 4-hacks and some assasinations and to try and revive team-mates.

If your team already has an Infiltrator look at the rest of your team's picks are their a lot of Biotics? If there are then maybe an Adept would be a good choice, Asari or Drell are my personal favourites over the Human and Justicar as you can work to set up explosions but take a small weapon just a pistol if you can like a Carnfix or Phalanx to have a 200% roughly recharge rate for your abilities. (And if your the Drell remember that Reave stacks and will melt through armour).

Engineer is also a good choice for a class imho, Human with chain overload can stun a few people coming at you and Incinerate spamming works well against armour though I would personally take the Salarian Engineer as his Decoy can really help a team if you spawn it in the right place it will draw the incoming Mob's attention away from you.

Though any class can make it through Gold if your worried about it I wouldn't recommend taking a Vanguard or Soldier class unless you are confident in your ability to do well on Gold with them.

If you have a Mic use it call out positions to your team and keep an eye open for being flanked, good communication will improve your overall team's gameplay.

The last advice I can offer from my experience is don't try to be a hero, don't try to Rambo just try to work with your team as best you can and if your getting shot at stay in cover if you can, In the end your score doesn't matter even if your team mates say otherwise all that matters is that you stay alive and don't put your team in danger.

Guess it's time to step up to gold (before the weekend). Only did one, by accident. Step into a match halfway through on a level 6 Krogan sentinel. We get to extraction and I'm doing just fine. I look at the board and realize "oh, it was gold, that was less hard than I expected."

It'll probably be harder if I know it's gold.

Much as I **** and moan, I enjoy carrying a team and the feeling of superiority that comes with it, provided my rookies are just inexperienced and under-geared.

If they're N7 600+ players who routinely do stuff that is not evident of inexperience, but actual stupidity, I get a bit mad.

To the usually Bronze and Silver BSN brethren reporting in, I wish you luck in this weekends events.  Of course, you are free to seek and receive help in this thread from any who would provide it.  Personally, however, I shall be deferring to the RNG gods to choose my teammates.  May they bless us all with ultra-rares in our Spectre packs.
