Right... well blood magic is evil according to the chantry and templars. But so is shapeshifting. So is spirit healer. So is Arcane Warrior. So if we're going by their standards, your mage better only take arcane mastery and creation lines, because otherwise, they're freakin' evil, man.
Seriously. Blood magic was originally taught by demons. Jowan is living proof that you can learn it from a book. Reading is hardly evil. Secondly, you can only take blood from party members and yourself. I'm sure every single one of your party members that wasn't Wynne or Allistair would consent. Finally, you're a Grey Warden that basically single handedly defeated a blight. It's REALLY hard to be evil at that point. If using blood magic is what it takes to save the world, then you better start using blood magic you martyr, you.
as for pure DPS mage build, just take the specializations for their stat bonuses then. Though, the strategy guide recommends shapeshifting, which I guess could work if it didn't suck.

On the topic of blood magic I will say this, simply because it uses your lifeforce, or that of others, to power a spell does not make blood magic evil in and of itself. For the argument about fire already existing in this world well blood does as well. Blood is honestly as natural as it gets to a living being. Add that to the fact that burning someone alive, freezing them solid, petrifying them in stone, are equally as sadistic. The point of this is that if you must consider blood magic evil, then because blood is a naturally occuring substance in nature, and the use of it causes suffering it is evil, at the same time because any spell of the primal tree is a naturally occuring element in nature and the use of it causes suffering, therefore both blood magic and primal magic are both evil. As for it being taught by demons oh well? Demons could probably teach any kind of magic. Magic only becomes evil with the intent of the user, it in and of itself is not inherently evil, the chantry can cry all they want about it however that group of hypocrites controls their templars by giving them lyrium dust, so needless to say I take what the chantry says at face value if even that.

The lore in the game strongly reinforces the notion of blood magic as evil.

So. What's that got to do with the moral implications.

Blood magic is simply another branch of magic. It is a tool, an object with which to achieve a goal or complete a task. It cannot be described as evil.
Just because its often abused to do evil acts such as sacrificing innocents for lifeforce to fuel spells or mind controlling people doesn't mean blood magic is evil. It means -most- blood magic USERS are evil e.g. Uldred, Magister lords of the Imperium.
Blood magic has no direct connection to demons or possession and any mage can easily be possessed through careless use of ANY branch of magic (even a newbie mage like Connor, an innocent little boy) not just blood magic. It is only said that blood magic was originally taught by demons. But like some people mentioned, it can also be learned from a book in the library. (which was shifted to Irving's office)
To simply absorb and accept completely whatever the Chantry says or claims is to be a myopic, simple-minded, hypocritical bigot that discriminates blood magic for the sake of discriminating blood magic with little or no justification while being completely fine with using spells like Waking Nightmare, Sleep + Horror, Fireball or Freeze + Shatter, to inflict equally gruesome or horrific acts of sadistic violence.

i always try play as an evil mage in fantasy games, healing spells bore the crap out of me, ive found i dont really need em if i dominate key enemies quickly, and i think playing as an arcane warrior would be boring as hell so i play as Blood mage and just got the spirit healer scec for extra sp

I think my favourite current mage spec is Arcane warrior, but with only 1 point in Combat Magic, just for the passive ability. It allows you to equip a helm that isn't god-awful ugly and is still useful (Executioner's helm for the extra +25 mana is my current mage helm of choice).
