Hi all,

So I've come back to Dragon Age 2 after a very long absence and thought I'd get the twoDLC that I haven't played before, but I note they are both available right from the get-go. Is there a 'good' point to go do them? Is there a minimum level reccomendation or can I really go do both of them without even touching the main story?

Thoughts? Comments? flames?

Legacy - act 2

MoA - If you really have nothing else to do

I played both in the middle of act 3, mostly just to prolong the end of the game, haha.

Is Legacy connected to act 2 in some way? I didn't notice.

I don't think it is.

I played Legacy in Act 2 after mother dies and before I go see the Arishok before he goes batpoo crazy IIRC. I think Act 2 and 3 are the best to play it, personally.

As for MoA, Act 3 would probably be best.

They don't (as far as I remember) have anything to do with the main story. Your position in the game will be referenced, people will meet will react differently depending on whether you've met them in the main game etc. That said, I think it's more satisfying in acts II and III of the game - makes more sense to me for Hawke to be invited out/hunted down once they're a noble/champion.
I've tried legacy in act 1, and it was certainly doable. I'd say that they can be done at any time.

I've done both in all three acts. I prefer them in Act 3.

Legacy has more of an emotional impact if the sibling is still alive, a grey warden and taken with Hawke in Act 3 (or 2), and if Leandra is dead. There's a lot of additional dialogue in regards to grey wardens and Bethany/Carver fill it in nicely *but in a pinch Anders does alright as well* But certainly it was interesting to do in Act 1 too, especially with Bethany, you get a lot of different dialogue with her in connection with Malcolm's quest.

MotA I always do in Act 3 now. Especially if Hawke is "Basalit-an", dialogues with Tallis reference this. If Alistair is king and that conversation has occured already, Teagan's dialogue alters at the party, and if you allow Dulci's son to get his V-card stamped, or Hawke let him go, Dulci has some really humorous dialogue at the party as well. Plus having Hawke at some hoity toity Orleasian party prior to achieving "Champion" just seems kind of lame. Esp in Act 1 where they are just displaced nobility without more than a few soveriegns to their name.

Legacy has a very slight difference in the conclusion's CS dependent on Leandra being alive or dead and your sibling being in or out of the household yet. So, if you play it in Act I you get a little family chat at the end; if you play it in Act II pre-death you have a few lines of conversation with Mom; if you play it in Act II post-death or Act III you get a "ghost mom/angel on my shoulder" type moment in front of the fire. Really short small difference in presentation / less in content and you can YouTube this stuff I'm sure if you feel you're missing out somehow. There are also some different walking-around talking lines if you take your sibling before they've left the household or after (depending on where they go they change too). That's about it for the "when" differences with that.

The party-conversation in MoA is different if you've become Champion and done a good portion of Act III where you interact with certain nobles etc. but other than that the when isn't really a big deal either. Some walking-around conversations also change based on "when" to reflect major story things or cemented romances etc.

In short, small differences make it hard to say what is a "best" time. If you really want to know... you could save before doing it each time and then reload before going and not do them, then do them once an act in your upcoming game - to hear everything. lol

My thoughts:

I'm big in to story.

Legacy reveals that Malcolm Hawke used blood magic to secure the magister's prison.

I found that discovering that the protagonist's father used blood magic and was never corrupted by it is huge for role playing. Making this discovery early on is key.

Example 1: It was difficult for me to codemn Merrill for using blood magic and demonology because, "Heck, dad used it and he never turned evil or into an abomination. It helped save HIS people. Maybe Merrill can save hers."

Example 2: If my protagonist is a mage, it won't be as difficult a choice to go blood mage knowing that dad did it and yet turned out alright.

Stuff like that.

I found Legacy got harder the later you left it so if I wasn't a mage I did it during Act 2, if I was left it to the end. MoA seemed to have nothing to do with the story (Aveline and Isabela have subplots of sorts during it if I recall correctly) and I tended to play it earlyish in Act 2 because I felt that was when the equipment you picked up was most useful.

I prefer to do both of them in act 3. I think it fits the story better

I like Legacy in Act 2 pretty early or nearish the end once you start wrapping things up in Act 3.

MotA after the game has ended. You don't really need the levels you gain from it and there aren't any real gamebreaking items in it so it makes me feel as Hawke didn't just sit around smanging Merrill all day until he vanished.

I found doing Legacy at the beginning of Act 2 and MotA at the beginning of Act 3 best for me personally. It kind of worked well with Cassandra's interrupts to Varric saying he's missed something when he skips over the three years between acts as if nothing happened during them.
