Hi All,

Does anyone know of a generally accepted 'best' build list for the companion set? Is there even such a thing or does it entirely depend on what class you're playing?

I'm currently playing as a dual wielding rogue, and I've just downloaded Legacy and Mark of Assasin if it helps.

Depends by what you mean by 'best build'. If you're looking for optimal companion builds for established party setups then yes, there are a few guides out there detailing how to spec them.

The key factor in optimising a companions build is the party setup - so there won't be a standalone 'best build' for each companion if that's what you're asking. Party setups do vary a little based on the class you're playing, but mostly will depend on what you're hoping to achieve with it.

For example, take your DW rogue - if you spec into shadow and have disorientating criticals you can setup disorients everywhere provided you are obscured. This opens up builds where you have your companions throw fatiguing fogs/chameleon's breath onto hawke (or just get hawke to use stealth/decoy with shadow veil) and have your companions set to use CCCs (spirit bolt/stone fist) etc on the resulting disoriented enemies. A more specialised version of such a disorient-setup could be a walking bomb setup, where disoriented elites get primed for hawke to explode with some spike damage.

Alternatively, if you go duelist/assassin and disorients are considerably harder to come by, you might use a more stagger orientated approach - using vendetta CCCs paired with lacerate to deal some of the highest spike damage in the game.
Each approach would require companions to be specced differently which makes the 'best' build to use quite different.

Generally speaking however, the best party in terms of speed runs/face-wiping for all classes consists of anders, bethany/merrill, and varric/sebastian. This is to do with the versatility and damage that mage companions can deal and the ridiculous dps that varric can achieve. They also have a pretty consistent..structure to their optimal specs, but I don't think I'll go into detail there.

Check out Arelex's guide (http://social.biowar...5/index/6890353) for an idea of how a DW party setup can work. I think there's a few vids of various setups (e.g. walking bomb) but I can't remember which one his guide is for.

I've got an all-melee setup which was more of a thought experiment (http://social.biowar...5/index/8225301) but you should be able to see the post-patch vendetta+lacerate in all its glory.

Otherwise I've just got some stand-alone speed runs of my standard setup:
Sky Horror (MotA spoiler-ish)
Malvernis (Legacy spoiler-ish)
Deep Roads

Hope this helps. If you have a particular setup in mind, I can try finding an optimised setup for it you're interested. Otherwise, good luck with whatever you decide to do. :)

If you're using Aveline then high strength with no willpower works really good. Anders could use the higher damage of high Magic pumping and it's good to use Vanguard on your warrior companions. Not sure how to build fenris.

Avaline runs optimally at 160 willpower when using Bolster and 1 activated sustained ability, usually Might + Muscle.

If you are going for a Vengence Anders, Martyr will run at around 2.65% instead of the 5% it reads because how how mana is counted with activated sustained abilities. To off-set this, you will want to give him anywhere from 220-240 mana total, while maintaining base 100% attack rating on normal targets, while having a warrior in the group that has Rally + Unite going off every cooldown.

It is assumed that with Anders as the only mage in the group with Creation you will have Heroic Aura + Valiant Aura along side Vengence. This will leave you at 40% consumed mana during combat encounters. This is why you will need to adjust for this.
