Kudos to the OP for this great guide. I had already figured much of it out after a lot of HVG runs (you certainly learn about the instakills the hard way with that class!), but the info about the Banshee was great. I usually used Biotic Charge on them only when they were in the middle of an animation already...like screaming or firing those energy balls at me. So now I know I can be more aggressive with them when they're not glowing!

And I also add my resounding agreement to the Phantom strategy. With a Vanguard that knows what they're doing, Phantoms are almost ridiculously easy when you can infinitely stun-lock them. Just don't charge if they've used that melee attack! I agree that it doesn't have to hit you...or even a teammate. Once I hear her ninja yell I keep far away until the danger is over!

I've had this happen against Phantoms twice in the past couple days, since I've started paying more attention to what these enemies are doing when they instant-kill:

1. Phantom starts a melee attack (maybe?).
2. I use Charge, staggering the phantom and interrupting its melee attack (if there was one).
3. I use Nova, backing away from the phantom in the process, while she is still staggered.
4. Immediately after the stagger ends, about the same time my nova ends, the phantom takes a VERY quick step toward me and performs the instant kill.

I was host both times

Thanks for posting this! Always considered instakills a random abomination but apparently their is some pattern there. Should be really helpful, because I hate instakills very very much.

While running solo and capturing one of the 4-point objectives, a phantom insta-killed me out of nowhere... basically behind me, which was off-camera.  Due to sound, I know that there was no previous melee, or hand-cannon.  So,  I can say with certainty that Phantom's insta-kill can follow "nothing", and we know it can follow her melee.  I'm not sure if it can follow hand-cannon though.

EDIT:  I know I had shields, but there's a chance I was staggered by another enemy... I can't recall with certainty.

Also, I have hosted while Kroguarding, charged a phantom to stagger, then immediately heavy-meleed, but was countered with insta-kill before I could connect.  Her stagger animation was not done when her insta-kill activated.  There could have been some processing lag, or I might have been 2 degrees off with my melee... but it gives me pause nonetheless.

I've already broken a Phantom's sword deliberately, she was standing behind cover with her palm shield up, head protected, I sniped the only target exposed. But the sword is indeed very tiny to be broken regularly.

I don't know if this is relevant, but, at least it appears so to me, the banshees seem to do OHK's A LOT more than the other ones..

I get OHK'd by banshees almost every other match or so,  when I play as a Krogan, but have only been OHK'd by the other three a couple of times each, in total..

Maybe it's got something to do with how I play, but it seems to me that the difference is too big for that..

My two cents, anyways ^_^

Yup.

She attempted a melee attack, which put her in her "instant-kill" state.

Either charge her BEFORE she swings, or run the hell away after staggering her.  It only takes a couple of seconds to reset her from her "instant-kill" state to normal.

Banshees can teleport then instantly pick you up. They are considered still while porting around.

Actually, what it is with phantoms is:

I think their instakill is subject to shieldgate.  I.e. they don't instakill you with your shields up. There tend to slash your shields or use their hand-cannon and then instakill you however as they seem to be able to switch between the two attacks very quickly.

Banshee's killing you out  of a charge (has happened to me many times) is friggen cheap.

Nope, that's part of why Phantoms are so widely loathed, sometimes they'll never OHK in an entire match next one you'll be reviving a teammate with full health/shields and she'll come up behind you bam OHK no warning.

They can OHK through anything.

Oddly the best at charging bosses in my experience is the Asari Vanguard. I charge and dodge back immediately (generally twice, especially against phantoms). Almost never get OHK'd.

I played some matches against Cerberus with a Kroguard, charged, meleed him, when he did some melee attack, I backed down, and I wasn't instakilled not once. On the other side, I observed a companion with a Krogan Sentinel meleeing an Atlas repeatedly. The Atlas made that attack to the ground and instakilled next.

Nice guide! Might have been said already, but don't phantoms require regular melee before instakill, just like atlases?

Excellent post. I was aware of most of it already through experience, although the Brute stuff is a revelation. Hopefully this will prevent my team-mates from dying pointless, moronic deaths. Lost track of the number of times I've seen a hotshot Kroguard biotic charge a banshee...

Quick markup just want to include something that I personally tested.

Atlas's can instant kill after ANY melee attack not just the ground pound. Just happened to me.

Nice to know, now I can get more agressive with banshees and brutes in addition to the phantoms/atlases I already was.

Regrading Brutes: yday managed to kill Brute who has just snatched a teammate - didn't even start the smashing movement, but it was already too late.

Great post OP! Seems to be spot on from my experience.

It will be fun to go Krogan Vangaurd again...I usually can do pretty good on gold, with this I should never get OHK again!

One tip for dealing with Phantoms: if you select the Explosive evolution with Ballistic Blades, it'll give you a (guaranteed?) stagger on explosion, so if you make sure to shoot your blades and give it a half second before you Heavy Melee, you get a "get out of jail" free card on the OHK if it happens. Between that and the 75% damage reduction during Heavy Melee (and 150% return damage on Blades!), the Batarian Soldier makes Phantoms a breeze (note: in order to kill them w/ one Ballistic Blade shot and Heavy Melee w/o the Martial Arts bonus active, you need to pick all the melee/power damage evolutions or use a strength enhancer).

PS: Banshees are affected by headshots from the Kishok, and this staggers them.

Sadly I must discredit the Banshee aura theory, I just now a few moments ago had one go in for the grab a few moments after having her aura blown away in the iconic biotic explosion everyone knows, so it appears she and the Brute can just grab you at any time they wish.

I hate to sound skeptical, but are you absolutely sure that it didn't, perhaps, just get its aura back up, or maybe was just in the middle of releasing its aura?

The only reason I ask is because, after having read this thread, I've repeatedly Charged Banshees like crazy when their aura was down, and never have I gotten grabbed.  Conversely, if I happen to just accidentally walk by one when its aura is up, its chances of grabbing me are pretty high.

Amazing post! You might want to add that a melee-spec'd Geth can stagger and 2-3 shot Phantoms up close very easily. As an engineer, just let them get close and go to town on them, or as an infiltrator, you can run up, drop a mine at their feet, and 2-shot them. Beware of other enemies if you do that, though, since anything out of range of your melee will drop you instantly since the melee burst eats your shields. It's a real glass-canon, but super effective if you're careful. During wave 11 I usually just go nuts and see how many I can take out with melee before they drop me. My record is 7 in a row.

I looooooooooooooove the Brute instakill. It's rare enough not to be frustrating, and it's so hilariously fast when it happens, I giggle every time.
