hi there

i've deleted mass effect 2 (steam install) and entered the cdkey in origin to have "all my favorite games installed via origin"
so i've downloaded the installer via origin, installed the game and wanted to start the game when i was asked to allow a release date check

and voila: GData (my antivirus software) sees a threat in "secupacker_launcher.exe" and stopped it
when googling secupacker_launcher.exe i only find entries about it either causing problems or being a virus

so i ask officially: why is there a virus in an installer, downloaded via origin?
official answer please!

Wouldn't hold my breath for an official response from a social forum for fans and gamers to hang out in. I reckon you'd be best off asking EA directly through the help bit of their site, though for what it's worth I've just googled it as well and the very first result says that it's "a legitimate windows process used by many applications of Windows operating systems". AVs do get false positives from time to time.

Firstly, going on forums and asking for an official response will not always get you one. Contact EA support if you wish to recieve an 'official response'.

To answer your query unofficially, Origin contains no virus, your antivirus software is seeing it as a threat based on its heuristic sensitivity. Updating your antivirus software or its definitions may fix the problem. I've never heard of GData, you may wish to change to a better known antivirus software if it continues to pick up false positives.

edit - PsiFive got there first.

GData is a very renown in (at least) the german-speaking part of europe with very good marks in detection, heuristics and removal of viruses; in test often near to kaspersky and other top products

i have the most up to date signatures...so i wonder if this is really a false positive or a real threat...on the other hand, my AV said it "acts like a malicious" programe, but is an unknown program at the same time

i just wondered why there would be a release date check in a game i installed via origin (or installed via the installer downloaded via origin to be accurate...)

Still doesn't change the fact that you need to be talking to EA about this. Someone may just wander along here, see the post and happen to know all there is to know about this .exe but it's not very likely. It's also pot luck anyone from BioWare or EA seeing it. Seriously, you need to go to EA's website and use their help facilities, but don't be shocked if they tell you it's supposed to be there and it's harmless. Or just go back to using Steam, which if you ask me is miles better anyway. Or sucks less, depending on your point of view.

i've already sent a message to the EA staff, but i posted here, because EA support tends to not answer at all...
the only time i've got an answer to a request was about payment...

Most likely not a threat, my sister uses Avast, and that deleted part of STEAM as it thought that contained a virus.

Even less likely to answer you in here, I'm afraid. If I were you I'd try using the live chat facility at EA. I had to over my Cerberus code coming up as already used the very first time I put it in. Went to live chat, got apology, two minutes later they told me to try it again and it worked. Your mileage may vary but I'd say live chat beats email help every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
