I agree 100%. It wouldn't be a big deal if it were just DA:O, but it's gotten to the point that half of the apps I install on my machine want to install some kind of service that becomes an "always-running" process...even when I'm not using the app that installed it. Not to mention all of the updater services and such that everybody wants me to run nowadays. It's just too much system clutter. Even with a quad core CPU I really don't want all those additional processes running when they're not necessary.Magic Zarim wrote...
The second point is that some users experience this as system intrusion; those who are keen about their system. I'm not saying Bioware is not to be trusted (running DA in admin is no problem). It's just that an NT service that isn't providing a system level service is unwanted. In my case, I am not pleased with another installed service that's only needed for DA during the time playing DA.
New Patch seems to be ready.

Well, for me at least, the DAUpdater service does stop when I quit the game, so it's not such a problem. Having said that, I'm also quite allergic to apps creating unneeded services in the background (adobe and their apps [which I can't really do without] come to mind).

Reminds me of the good ol' DOS game days when we used to worry about what was called back then TSR programs. Now that everyone gets to play games and there's no need for boot disks, we've got every app in the world thinking it's so crucial that it has to hang around, check for updates, and load during startup.
...sigh...
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Hey, at least we don't have to re-boot with alternate config.sys files to configure extended and expanded memory differently for different games. Remember all of the utilities that came out in the '90s that were designed to load things into memory differently to free up base RAM? Ah, those were the days. Stupid Stacker 2 eating up all mah base mem...I only have a 20MB hard drive, dammit! I need mah Stacker!

What was that Auto memory optimizer that came out with ms-dos 6.22 called again?
It was awesome... almost eliminated the need for boot disks to play specific games...

Can we re-apply mods after the patch? The only one I have is the No Hat and I think I'll throw up If I have to see my party running around with hats all the time....
You're free to try. Remember, user-generated content is not supported by BioWare or EA. You use it at your own risk. If it breaks v1.02, then you'll have to fix it.
I guess that means all the ladies get bras again....
Damn you BiWare for screwing up my bewbies!!!
No need for that, good sir. There's no reason at all for those files to interfere with the patch. They are just model meshes and textures. I don't see anything in the patch notes indicating those were changed.
That said, you really should remove all of your mods before patching and then reapply them after. This engine does some screwy things with mods (see Georg + Shale).
I moved the mods out of the folder, installed the patch and copied them back. Bewbies working properly and "no hat outside of combat" working too

I'm only asking because this is one of those mods that installs in the override file, which apparently is a bad, bad thing.

Finally some much needed tweaking, especially regarding game balance changes, have yet to try out however. At first glance however it seems the community has been listened to.
A few things missing:
Looking to the notes it doesn't mention any fixes to the graphical glitches such as wagons so I will assume that this is on the 'to do' list.
As well as the bow's being underpowered etc
Overall I'm much happier through and will be interested to see how my duel wielding dalish elf loves handling his dagger and sword style now

Ok, I understand. See, they have had their initial sales on DAO. But on January 26 they release Mass Effect 2. So, we are supposed to be finished with DAO by then.
One way to get players off of DAO is to get large numbers of mages to rage quit.
Elementary, my dear Watson!
Wow. It's still the most powerful class in the game. In fact, it's still overpowered.
Just... wow.

See, the thing about it, the people who are now calling mages "nerfed" know quite well that the mage class will continue to be a super-amazing OP class. However, they really enjoy complaining about things, so they find the "biggest" change in the patch and complain about it. This will happen in the next patch, and the one after that, and the one after that, until Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods, destroys humanity, only for it to be created anew.
And these new people will probably still complain about ****, too.
Admittedly: Yes, I was in this exact thread earlier lamenting about the extended cooldown/lessened time-span of the four mage spells, but I was mostly joking when I did so.:innocent:

The first claims that if a user wishes to fix balance issues, then they can edit the files, instead of having Bioware put that into a patch. The easy counter to this argument is that if a user wishes to keep overpowered abilities, then they can edit the files, use the toolset to compensate, or run debug scripts. Given this, the question becomes, "whose responsibility is it to edit files?" Obviously, the answer to this is that it's the person that does not wish to play a game as Bioware intended it to be played, to edit the files. If Bioware puts out a patch, it's official. That's how they intend the game for it to be played. Don't like it? YOU edit it.
The second argument goes something like, "it's a single player game, so balance isn't needed". A single player game needs to be fun and balanced out of the box, to satisfy the >95% of users that never edit anything. Fun and balance are correlated. The game is there to provide a challenge. If there's an easy challenge circumvention button, then there's no more challenge, and therefore no more fun. This is why it's Bioware's responsibility to make it so that both fun and balance are incorporated. This is a continuous effort and balance usually does not fully exist out of the box, so naturally, changes are required as t goes to infinity.

Has anyone installed this patch while also using the Better Tooltips mod? As much as I'd like to install the patch, I can't go back to "This spell does SOME damage, and MAY do SOMETHING ELSE. We'd rather not say what."

Should be no problem, just remove the file from overdrive, apply the patch and put it back there. Of course, the tooltips for modified spells will be incorrect as the mod only changes the descriptions. You'll have to wait for the author to update the mod for this patch.

If the patch makes the game even easier, I am not downloading it. Stop catering to retards, they have easy difficulty already. Fix the bugs. Fix the memory leak. Implement the archery buff. This patch looks half-assed.
Read the patch notes. The patch certainly does not make the game easier... Only fixes a few encounters that were abnormally hard because of improper scaling.
