Yesterday I decided to take my Gethineer to gold to try it out... got all prepped, clicked the search for random/random/gold and... suddenly I'm standing on the landing pad on w/g/g in the middle of round 5... fine, I just have to make it down below where everyone else is, past a couple of primes, pyros and troopers. Got there eventually and we proceeded to finish the match up with full extraction... yay...
So my question is...
How does this joining in progress work?
This is only the second time it's happened to me, but I know of at least two times where I started a match with 3, but ended with 4 when someone else joined in...
Sometimes I wouldn't mind actually CHOOSING to join a match in progress, but that doesn't seem to be an option anywhere... at least on the PC.
If it's completely random, it seems like it might actually happen more often...

I'd like to know this as well, i've never joined match in progress myself, but constantly get replacements for quitters.

I've wondered about this, too. I joined matches in progress a lot during the demo, but it never happened to me in the actual game and I usually don't get replacements for quitters.

I used to a LOT in the Beta, but since we've gone live it's only happened to me a couple of times and only when I do things like specify everything, i.e. Cerberus, Firebase Ghost, Silver.Bergioynn wrote...

The fact you got one on random is cool.

Happens to me quite a bit when I specify base, enemy, and level. Never had it happen on a random/random. The first time I tried a silver, I joined in on wave 10. Trial by fire, but got the full 30000 creds. My score was like 3000 vs 70000. Oh well.

They should give joining games in progress priority. Like Mrguse said, it was quite common during beta, and occurs more commonly when you specify enemy and/or location. I love joining games in progress, the first waves are usually boring hehe.

So far I was once (unintentional) placed into an ongoing match. However I usually cancel the search after ~10 seconds and search again (which is for me out of some reason a way faster way to actually find a lobby), so maybe I just don't wait long enough for the search routine to progress from "search lobby" to "search ongoing match".

This, when I get more specific I find myself dropped into games already going. I don't recall dropping into an ongoing game with random.

I haven't had it happen since the demo. I presume there are a lot more people playing the full version than the demo, and with all the problems not hosting can cause, most of those people host their own games, making it that much harder to not find a game still in the lobby.

Ok, so I might try this out and specify b/e/l and see if I can get into more in-progress matches... it was fun to join in the heat of battle...

I got put into a game against reapers on wave 9 on silver yesterday. When I joined, everyone was permadead with most of the level still well populated. A couple of rockets later and some kiting, everyone managed to make it to extraction. That was rewarding.
As stated, pick which enemy you want to face. If it's set to random, it will not join a game in progress.
Sometimes there is a good reason there is an opening though. There have been a few times where the lag has been unplayable in these "in progress" games.

I've gotten a few quick matches in progress so far, and they have always been after I set my enemy to a specific type with a random map. So I guess if you want to up your chances of getting one in progress, try that.
When I tried using a specific enemy AND specific map, I usually end up in a lobby all by myself for a long while on PC.
