There's no easy way to say this but lets be honest here.... there's just no way BioWare can do what [really] needs to be done in the space of couple of months with no [real] budget in a way that can satisfy either the [core] fanbase or the wider audience. They've already said there will be no new gameplay. Presumably little to no new voice work either.

Trust me I get that Mass Effect 3 will have paid for itself by now and that the funding for the EC will have to come out of this and they're certainly not doing this out of charity... but rather than be palmed off with what they can cobble together under the circumstances wouldn't you rather pay for a proper expansion with new voice acting and gameplay, etc?

Wouldn't you rather give BioWare the opportunity to bring the games' closing sequence closer to what they originally intended with war-assets and cameos and such rather than settle for this? IMO BioWare should budget what they really need to make this happen and charge accordingly for it [within reason]. The question is how would a paid EC differ... would it be worth it... could it be justified? What would you pay for/it?

Edit: Artistic Integrity aside extending the existing ending is the cheaper option of the two all things considered. Creating a whole new 'Priority: Earth' sequence for free probably wouldn't have been feasible. I ask you how would Broken Steel have turned out if that had been free? It couldn't have been done... certainly not like that. It was 'paid ending dlc' but it arguably salvaged the entire fanchise.

It may be free but will it be as good or as ambitious as if it had been paid dlc? Will it be enough to salvage the franchise?

Sorry for their luck. They can use the $70 they took from me the first time around from selling me an incomplete game.

I would've been willing to pay extra for a new ending if Bioware just came out and admitted that they made a mistake the first time and were willing to rework it.

And I'm sure I'm not alone in those feelings.

I've tried to explain this.

They are doing it for free because people complained. It is a business tactic. When more people play the game they will make more revenue. If the endings are made better they will buy DLC. They will buy MP packs.

Also it is only free until 2014.

I'd shell out 30 bucks for an expansion.

Generally speaking, no new gameplay = not paying.

Also this. Resurgance was free because people would go buy the packs in order to get the DLC items/characters.

They should have delivered on their promises in the first place and we wouldn't have this problem.

Hate to say it guys but it looks like the future of video gaming will only have a "beginning," the rest will come in parts in the form of DLC.

Also: No new gameplay = No pay.

The game would have turned a profit with a four year dev cycle and a similar increase in budget. They can certainly afford to add a few extra cutscenes to pretend they listened. I'd consider paying if they turned it into a finished product, but they've said they're not going to.

I propose the charityware model: you're free to pay as much as you want, including nothing.

Then you can be happy, and so can the rest of us.

I don't even bother downloading it for free. I don't care about same endings with just "closure".

Don't blame the consumer for a bad business call, I want to see Bioware continue successfully but that does give them free reign to say one thing and deliver another, the game is definitely not as advertised even when taking hype into account.

I would happily pay 10-15 for a DLC/patch that completely rewrites Priority: Earth and the ending. I'd also likly pay for a DLC that makes previous surviving squad members usable in ME3 and adds true coninuations to the romances. It's a lot of new content to add and I'm not under the illusion that it wouldn't cost anything.

I would also never, ever purchase a single thing from BW again. These things would fix my major complaints which what should have been one of my favorite games of all time and as lame as it is, I'd pay for the content that should have come with the game in the first place. But doing business with BW after that would never happen.

They may not get money from it directly, but you should think about the lack of future revenue if they don't make it good enough.

They sort of painted themselves into a corner.. If they charged for the EC DLC, they'd be attacked for selling an incomplete game in the media, on BSN, it would be even worse than it is now. They have no option other than it being free.

Since it has to be free, it won't be of the same quality of, say, Lair of the Shadow Broker. They've already come out and said the magic words, though, They're not changing the ending.

They are in debt with us if they need to deliver more content to complete the game. I really, really hope the DLC do it.

They don't have a budget? Really now?

They sold millions of copies, the collector's edition sold out, and then I bet they got plenty of money from day one DLC sales. And atop all that, Bioware is part of EA now, which itself is a company with ridiculous amounts of money.

They've got a budget.

Not doing this for free = ridiculous amount of self inflicting damage at a business stand point, PR insta-death, etc...

it's not free out of the goodness of their hearts. It's free because they're trying to salvage their customer base/brand. Which is damaged because of their own actions.

And knowing EA the extended cut will probably reek of cut corners too.
